Porsche 944/924S Maximum CV Joint Angle on Late Car
This video shows the suitability of the late Porsche 944 platform for using Type 2 VW CV joints. As shown in the video, the maximum CV axle angle comes to ±13 degrees. This is for a late model or all vehicles with the aluminium rear trailing arms.
The stock/OEM 944 33 spline CV joint is capable of ±22 degress of angle (early and late cars). For those with late cars looking for uprated CV joints, the Type 2 joints may be a good choice. It is advisable to do your own testing similar to this video to check the angular motion does not exceed what the Type 2 joints are capable of. This video is just a reference.
Early cars or cars with stock/OEM steel rear trailing arms will have higher angles due to the same travel but with a shorter axle. They may not be suitable for Type 2 CV joints.
Thanks to Philip Ryan for the video!

What engine upgrades is this swap meant to compensate for? Factory turbo was only about 210 horse power right?
@@gregoryhousch3321 the factory transaxle is known to fail even with stock power levels. It particularly doesn't like it when you dump the clutch. Most customers have engine conversions or built engines and want to have a reliable transaxle option that doesnt cost the earth to replace. the 01e is known to take 1200nm of torque behind a turbo v8 in a 944 application. Others just want different or longer gear ratios. I have a short ratio one in a completely stock 944S and it really changes the driving dynamics and makes the car more enjoyable to drive
can I buy the kit only? Without gearbox.
@@MMDD-r8m of course. I can supply whatever combination you need
This is awesome, man. I cant wait until my build is in this phase !!!
@@cartermackenzie1135 thank you!
I bought an O1E AWD....will this work and why do you say you dont recommend using these ones?
You need to weld the center diff, the load will go to the rear output if you don't.
Allegedly. I haven't experienced this myself
@@Arendeagle although they both have the 01e code they are very different architecture inside. The awd on has a hollow output shaft which sends the torque to the centre diff and then back through the middle of the output shaft to the pinion. This longer load path and hollow shaft overcomplicated things for a 2 wheel drive application. There are other differences too including the extra weight but it can be made to work if you have one you want to use
You are brilliant in your description and attention to detail. Any chance you will do an LS swap kit?
There are many out there already, I am considering only using the bellhousing adapter and going with a plate mount with my build however
@@Arendeagle thank you. We didn't get the ls engine over here so it wouldn't really be a viable swap but makes for a cool car if you can get them locally
Interesting kit, could this also work on the 928? The gearbox for the 928 are expensive especially the ones with LSD and the early ones have weak synchros, so to be able to use the 01E in a 928 would be a great way to future proof it 😀
@@Nintendo8bit all I know is that the 928 is very different to the 944. I haven't even seen one up close but I doubt it would bolt up the same unfortunately
At first I thought it was a podracer
Why is the shifter so tall? Can it be made shorter like stock?
@@944terbo it moves it closer to the steering wheel. The kit is focused at those wanting improved performance from their car but it is possible to do custom parts
Looks like a solid kit, but maybe in another life time when mine ceases to be a daily driver.
What years is a late and an early 944??
The easiest way to tell is by the shape of the dashboard. The early cars have the "square dash" which has 3 round gauges and the late "oval dash" has all the gauges in one instrument binnacle like a more modern car
What's the kit? Any links?
Thanks, link added to the description for the website page with all the details
What is the box 😊 out of?
@@arthurmchugh5184 generally audi a4 or passat b5 but I don't know the complete list of cars they came in
Thanks !! I had a 951 with a stout limited slip ,electric oil cooler and short shift kit for my track 🚗 never had any problem 👌
I've been looking for a good transaxle option for the upgrades I'm doing to my 86 944. So glad your channel popped up in my feed.
Nice! I'm just about to close out the ordering for the current batch so if you want to get in on it let me know ASAP
@@lobb_ltd It'll have to be the next batch; I'm just starting tearing it all down. But definitely will be ordering the kit from you.
Nice work! Such a clever piece of kit, hope to do a 1.8T and O1E swap in the future.
Thanks! Hit me up if you ever want any of those bits
@lobb_ltd will do, I've been keeping up on Instagram. Love the shifter, think you can make a version for a regular shifter rod?
@@RedRoofGarage there's one coming to work with the stock transaxle
