Wind and Truth Review. Stormlight Archive 5.

My thoughts on the latest entry in the Stormlight Archives.
This review sums up so much of what I thought of this book too. There was so much telling instead of showing, and MAYBE it was an end to the overall story arc, but we got an ending to precisely zero character arcs
Not getting to know what has happened to my man rock is super sad. Hopefully, we get the rumoured horneater book at some point to see where his story goes.
Definitely looking forward to that one. I can't imagine Rock being written out that way.
So glad I’m not alone not liking the ghostbloods storyline. It’s been my least favorite plot line since the beginning because Shallan never does anything about them and when she tries she always loses. When she wins here I wasn’t satisfied I was just like finally it’s over we can move on!
I always thought that was the weakest part of Shallan's story. So often the ghostbloods want the same thing as shallan, and them chasing her in the spiritual realm was like... fine? ok? I am glad we moved past that and hope the next arc gives her something more meaty.
@ well I think her motivation makes sense in that she wants Mishram to stay in her prison and knows the Ghostbloods will do something terrible with her so she has to stop them. My main issue really does just come down to how Shallan can never out maneuver them. With every other main character they have moments where they get to best their enemies but Shallan ALWAYS loses to the ghostbloods anytime she has the upper hand it’s revealed no she actually doesn’t and she is forced to do what they want. It could also be because I haven’t read anything other then Mistborn eras 1 and 2 and the stormlight books so all the extra lore with the Ghostbloods is lost on me so they just come across as a really annoying secret organization that can’t ever be bested. Near the end when she finally kills Mraize and has this moment where she feels appreciative of what he taught her and I just did not care and felt it wasn’t really earned. Mraize didn’t really teach her anything just kept her on a hook for more info. Idk I hope her next arc is more interesting cuz while I love Shallan as a character her plots were my least favorite.
@@justinrandall9550 Same feeling the not teaching her part. Also how she is like " my mom, my dad, my teachers" and includes mraize there. like girl, he really wasn't a teacher to you.
@ exactly!
ok thought experiment : what part of this would you skip?
Hmm, what do you mean? not sure I fully understand the question.
@@Otomoking I'm curious about what you said on skippable parts of the book. Is there a particular section or plotline you found slow or tedious?
I found a lot of the earlier Dalinar visions to be things we have seen before. It was interesting sure, but it wasn't anything new. Plus we might see them again when we get Herald POV books as well.
This is very well articulated. I had I lot of these same thoughts and you explain perfectly
Thank you. I wrote some notes down and did this in one take, so I was worried it wouldn't come out well. Really appreciate your kind words.
Its hard to connect with venli because she is a narcissist.
Pretty much. Eshonai was the cooler sister.
Great review, I loved hesring your thoughts! You should do one with spoilers next
Much appreciated. Anything specific about the review you liked? Definitely thinking of making more reviews for shows/games/movies I like. And the next one will probably be a spoiler one about Winds and Truth.
brotomo, my favourite sectoid <3
Heyo gos! How'd you get here?
I have some different opinions here or there, but overall agree. Great review!
Appreciate hearing that a lot, thank you.
One thing that I have not seen anyone bring up is the live stream comment that Brandon made about the sanderlanch of this book. He said the idea for the ending of this book was the ending of a D&D game he played like 20 years ago (I am paraphrasing). Not that it is confirmed, but I think the way that D&D game ended was basically he flipped the board when he was sure he was losing.
I read that too and it's a good point. It was a very much an ending of "I don't want to play this game anymore". I really didn't like how Dalinar ended, or how we still have some version of the Blackthorn still fighting. Oath Renouncing was cool the first time, then done twice in a row? eeeeh.
New Oaths were so impactful in the past. This time around they weren't and didn't matter. Also if one can skip an oath, how come Kal wasn't able to. In WoK, when he is lying in that hollow he says how can't save his friends, essentially the oath from RoW.
@@karohe Szeth near instantly made the oath and then abandoned it :/. Frankly I hadn't thought of that angle but it reminds me of words of radiance when Kaladin swears his oath and fights for Elhokar, how good that was. In general the power creep has made oaths feel a lot less important.
You're misremembering a bit. It was a game he was DMing. Dan Wells has spoken about it. The twist at the end was the antagonist forced the players to fight an innocent child.

I kinda hoped this was a review with spoilers. There is so much that I think is wrong with this book. If 100% of the introspections were cut, it would have been an okay book.
Happy to discuss that as well. But I wanna see if people even think this video is worth anything for me to make another one with spoilers.
You are one of the first few with a review. Being the first is always good. People are going to look for a place to discuss, agree or disagree with this book. It could be a great way to bring a ton of subscribers.
I will definitely recommend using charts like Kurt Vonnegut's "shape of a story" for the characters. There is a short youtube video from a talk he gave.
