I love that you dance this in modern clothes, it transports the aesthetic of baroque dance into the present, strips it of any lurking (or not so lurking) potential for nostalgia about bygone splendor and allows for a very modern appreciation of it. I think this also somewhat de-emphasizes gender differences that are otherwise so hightened. J'adore!

What a shame they aren't wearing costumes.

How can we be sure that this style of dance was the one in use during the Baroque age? There are no films or videos from that era. Yet we can be sure that in the seventeenth century it really was danced like this. Artistic sensitivity, musical knowledge and pictorial culture allow us to overcome the temporal distance that separates us from those centuries. Bravo!

I do not know, but this may be a teaching video; it is an excellent reference for a clear rendition of the steps, arm positions, and floor pattern of the dance. Unfortunately, even with the combination of all these elements, this performance, in my opinion, lacks a little something which makes it fall short of an ideal Baroque interpretation : an interpretation which attempts to express and convey significance and meaning, such as we may listen for in a musical interpretation. What is this little something which could show significance and meaning in this dance? Firstly, the title gives us a clue, which roughly translated means 'aimiable conqueror', coming from a popular song of that name in Campra's opera 'Hesione' (1700), and sung by the character Venus with the words 'Aimiable conqueror, dear tyrant of a heart, Love, whose empire and martyrdom are full of sweetness, join my charms to the effort of your arms.....' Secondly, in his book 'Maître à Danser' (1725) Rameau refers to 'L'Aimable Vainqueur' as a 'very beautiful ballroom dance'. I believe the title and its context, and the fact that we are seeing a ballroom dance, therefore, to be very relevant to the manner in which it should be performed. Surely, with these factors, the dance demands a tacit affection between the two, and yet I cannot see it here. Is there a smile exchanged between them? Hardly; indeed, they do not appear to be particularly happy, and any implicit relationship between the two within this dance is undermined through lack of sincere acknowledgement, expressive eye contact, subtle head movement and shoulder shading. It is almost like watching two dancers performing solos. I am of the opinion that in the Baroque ballroom, dancers performing Aimable Vainqueur would relate in an enjoyable interplay in various parts of the choreography, in addition to relating to the audience surrounding them. The significance and meaning would lie in successfully conveying to the audience a feeling of communication, of enjoyment, of life, of relationship, even a subtle sexuality: and the audience would be delighted. Having danced Aimable Vainqueur numerous times, in costume presentations and otherwise, I therefore have the utmost appreciation of the technique and control displayed in this video, and have not made these criticisms lightly.

Amazing. As a costume historian I have often wondered how a fashion for long trains figured into a court culture that was also big on dancing--but this film goes to show that in the hand of a skilled and mindful dancer, the train is not an issue after all. In fact there's an incredible grace in the way that she sweeps it up at just the right moment, and lets it fall back down again when it is no longer her way. I feel silly for even doubting.
