Jason, we lived in Alaska when our kids were little. We first had a topper on our truck for the first couple years, then a camper, which was great. As the kids got bigger we upgraded to an older class C motor home, used it for many years.

Is there such a thing as a truck bed tent? Like the rooftop tent on your 4Runner but it pops up for the truck bed? Save you some time having to build a camper and can be removed and stored when not in use.
