I think the question is-how far back can we trace these beliefs? Anglo-Saxon and Norse paganism both originate from a Proto-Germanic religion, but that itself stems from Indo-European paganism. This explains why Tiw/Tyr, from Proto-Germanic Tiwaz, is etymologically cognate with Jupiter (Djous pater), Zeus (Zeu pater), and Tiwaz (Luwian). From a characteristic standpoint, gods like Þunor/Thor, who wields a hammer or axe and controls lightning, resemble Jupiter, Zeus, Taranis (Celtic), and Ukko (Finnish). Similarly, Bældæg/Baldr, described in the Prose Edda as radiant and shining, parallels Belenus (Celtic), a god of light, akin to Apollo or Helios. We can also observe mythological parallels in creation stories. For example: - Ymir's sacrifice by Odin, Vili, and Ve to create the world mirrors Purusha (Vedic), sacrificed by the gods to form creation. - Tiamat (Babylonian) is slain by Marduk, who uses her body to form the cosmos. - Prometheus (Greek) shapes the first man and woman from clay, as does Rod (Slavic). As you mentioned, the Anglo-Saxons preserved distinct oral traditions separate from their Norse cousins, but these traditions ultimately share deeper roots in Indo-European mythology. From divine twins like Hengist and Horsa echoing Romulus and Remus-or their equine associations paralleling Castor and Pollux-we see repeated motifs passed down through the Indo-European cultural heritage.

The God of Chaos has a son, the Wolf headed warrior Wepwawet, his title was "Opener of the Ways", the ancient Greeks called Ursa Minor Cynosura, the Dog's Tail, in Sumerian 'ur' means Dog or Wolf, 'sa' means Muscle, Sinew, or the color Red, the Sumerian word Ur-sag means Warrior, 'sag' means Head, "Wolf-Head". Draco was seen as the wife of Seth, the God of Chaos, Taweret, the hippopotamus with the limbs of a lion, she wears a crocodile skin on her head, but on Egyptian star maps, the symbol of Wepwawet is there instead, the Standing Wolf riding a Plow. Ursa Minor is the Little Dipper, Seth is the Big Dipper, "Thigh of the Bull's Leg", the thigh is associated with the loins, they called the Big Dipper The Plough. In Sumerian Dimshah means both Bear and Hippopotamus, Taweret and Ursa Minor, 'sa' is the Egyptian sign for Protection, Lifesaver, seen next to her right leg, Taweret is the goddess of Rebirth. In Sumerian 'dim' means Pole, Pillar and Post, or Bond, Bind Knot, Taweret in mythology chained the Bull's leg to the Pole Star, we are tilted 23.4 degrees towards Polaris "The Dog's Tail", a 23.4 degree tilt on the other side will point towards Vega, our old Pole Star 12,000 years ago, associated with Bau-Gula, the Goddess of Dog's known as the First Physician, she is associated the the War Dog's Tongue, the healing effects seen in its healing ability, she was the mother of the healing god of rebirth, the son of Pabilsag, his name means "Chief or Head Ancestor", linking him to the underworld. Images of Bau-Gula are her with a Dog's Head, the pole stars, Vega is the head, and Polaris is the Dog's Tail, in between them is the head of Draco, seen as The Child Damu, a name that means Blood, Brother and Relative. It's much older than what this guy thinks. Seth was the Black Boar, Taweret was Reret "The Sow", Damu was the Pig called "Sah", which is the name of Orion, "Sahu the Hidden One", Pabilsag was Sagittarius, one stands at the Golden Gate of the Gods, Sagittarius, and Orion at the Silver Gate of Man. The Anglo-Saxons have been apparently persuaded to think themselves the chosen people, the anointed race of the Lord, commissioned to drive out the heathen, and plant their religion and institutions in every Canaan they could subjugate. The idea of a "destiny," connected with this race, has gone far to justify, if not to sanctify, many an act on either side of the Atlantic; for which both England and the United States, if nations can be personified, ought to hang their heads in shame, and weep scalding tears of repentance. If the Anglo saxons, your American and British blood, think they have a destiny other than this, than raising up races or nations, spreading Christianity, or administering just and fair laws where ever our domains extend, and they believe to have the right to stomp under the hooves every prostrate Indian, black, and dark browed Mexican, like Xerxes to lay waste the fairest countries, or Caesar with his return to Rome with the spoils of vanquished kingdoms, let them beware before they stumble upon the thick bosses of those bucklers of the Almighty who have already drank up the blood of the worlds proudest victors! It is the same game of ambition only played with different hands, it it that ancient spirit only in new form, sugar it over with as many fair names as you please, evil is evil, tyranny is tyranny, and sin is sin, whether the United States, England, or Rome! -war with Mexico reviewed, Abiel Livermore American Peace Society 1850

Wyrd or Weard (weird) is cognate to dutch Waard (wierd) what means something like side or flank. For example 'uiter-waarden' is the outer-banks of a river at both sides ; the low land that drowns when the water-level is high. Waard also means polder and inn-keeper ; the person that is standby (aside) and keeps an eye , a warden or guard. Boomgaard is tree-garden what is aside or flanks a building. Vergaren is to collect or gather, for instance some watchmen (a posse or guard). Waarde is the worth of something compared (side by side) with a standard value. A sword is litterally something to carry at your side. Wierd is also a frisian first name meaning compagnion , friend, someone to trust. The shield at each side of a sail-boat is also called 'zwaard' = sword. zwaar = heavy/weary, waar = true, waren = wares, commodities. Merkwaardiig = mark-worthy/notable/aware-able . word = note/name . weird is something additional, shit what comes along. worden = to become, to generate, to create/shape the main thing. Woerd is the male-duck additional/siding with the hen. Zwoerd = the rind of a piece of bacon. wearing clothes = been added/provided with clothes. Waardering = valuation, appreciation.

Yes our ancestors practiced it, but it ultimately serves nobody. Paganism in general seems to be an aesthetic choice for people who want a spiritual life but hate Christianity. Christianity, which, by the way, the Angleseaxebearn converted to upon realizing its superiority. The namesake of my hometown, St. Albans, perfectly demonstrates this.

Very interesting video. My only criticism is that the phrase "in spite of all evidence to the contrary" regarding belief in the existence of the spirit beyond death implies a materialistic bias that suggests that there actually is evidence to the contrary, which there is not. It's a physically untestable hypothesis with plenty of phenomenological evidence.

Any thoughts? The Old Norse word "wyrd" is indeed feminine, and its concept shares similarities with the Holy Spirit, Brahman, and Tao. Wyrd represents fate, destiny, or the web of life, often personified as a goddess. Similarities with other concepts: 1. Holy Spirit (Christianity): Like Wyrd, the Holy Spirit is often depicted as a feminine, nurturing force, guiding and connecting all things. 2. Brahman (Hinduism): Brahman, the ultimate reality, is sometimes represented as a feminine, all-encompassing essence, similar to Wyrd's web of life. 3. Tao (Taoism): The Tao, the fundamental principle of the universe, is often described as a feminine, receptive, and nurturing force, akin to Wyrd's concept. Common themes among these concepts: 1. Interconnectedness: All things are connected and part of a larger whole. 2. Feminine principle: Emphasis on receptive, nurturing, and guiding qualities. 3. Transcendence: Beyond human comprehension, yet immanent in the world. 4. Holism: Encompassing all aspects of existence, from fate to the cosmos. The Norse people may have seen Wyrd as a powerful, feminine force, shaping destiny and connecting all things. This perspective resonates with the ideas of the Holy Spirit, Brahman, and Tao, highlighting the common human quest to understand the mysteries of existence and our place within the larger web of life.

Weird enough a dutch woerd is an english drake (masculine duck), the dragon/bull (horn-bearer), twin-horned snake (Ullr /eel) is to compare with hebrew/greek EL/chronos. When Chronos was castrated and became revived He was feminized as Living Earth (Gea). Odin cuts the primordial snake into pieces and shapes the universe. Similar Michael wages war on the old Dragon.

Ƿes hal. Loved the vid, mate! As the camera panned across that ancient landscape, I could not but help wonder about the countless stories that have unfolded there, the battles, the love affairs, the celebrations, the births, the deaths, the unconsolable grief, the tired, prickly, skin scratching satisfaction that comes with the knowledge that the last of the thatching to the new hus has been completed, that quiet moment when the herder stands in awe of the dying rays of Sunne lighting up the distant jagged ridgeline, as though a gold crown, against the heavy grey clouds an approaching mid summer's storm. We may have forgotten, but the land and the Gods remember still. Be well.
