Hello. My name is Captain Ken and I work for TowBoat US. Most of the videos on this channel show some of the work I did as a contract captain for them when I worked down in Venice/Englewood FL and now up in Sarasota FL. I release new videos every Sunday at 10am.
They Almost Crushed My Boat With the Mast!!! | Tow 30ft Nimble

Today I got a call to help out our crane guy (Charlie) with a tow. They had planned on refloating and then pulling the boat out with the crane right where it sank, but due to live powerlines that FPL wouldn’t temporarily shut down, they couldn’t get the crane into position, and so we needed to tow the boat to another location where the crane could have easy access. As is often the case, these videos aren’t in order, so this was actually only the 2nd post salvage tow I’ve done for Charlie, and the first one we did at what’s left of the Seafood Shack.
Usually, the salvage guys will use the crane to de-mast the boat, but since that wasn’t an option, they elected to do it without, and almost crushed my boat when the mast bounced in a direction they didn’t expect it to

Today’s adventure turned out to be quite the unexpected challenge! I got a call from Charlie, our go-to crane operator, to assist with a boat salvage job that took a bit of a turn. The original plan was to refloat the boat where it sank and then have the crane pull it out of the water. However, things didn’t go as planned due to live powerlines overhead. Despite our best efforts, FPL couldn’t temporarily shut the lines down, which meant the crane couldn’t get into position safely.
With no other option, we had to pivot quickly and tow the boat to a different location where the crane could safely access and handle the job. This wasn’t my first rodeo with Charlie-this tow actually ended up being the second post-salvage tow I’ve done for him, with the first taking place at what’s left of the old Seafood Shack.
Normally, these kinds of salvages involve using the crane to de-mast the boat first, making the process more controlled and safer. Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible this time around, so the salvage crew decided to proceed without the crane. It was all going smoothly-until it wasn’t. The mast bounced in an unexpected direction, and for a tense moment, it came dangerously close to crushing my boat! Luckily, quick reflexes saved the day, but it was definitely a heart-stopping experience.
In this video, you’ll see the challenges we faced and how we worked as a team to adapt and get the job done. From the logistics of towing a partially refloated boat to managing unexpected moments, it’s all part of the unpredictable world of marine salvage and towing.
If you enjoy watching behind-the-scenes footage of real-life salvage and towing operations, be sure to give this video a thumbs up, subscribe to the channel, and hit the bell icon so you don’t miss any future adventures. We’ve got plenty of stories, close calls, and big rescues to share!
Thank you for watching, and as always, let me know your thoughts in the comments below. Have you ever been involved in a salvage or tow operation? I’d love to hear your experiences!

I thought you were joking when you said to cut the mast down, but they did!
Tow captain looks like a fun job if you're good at it, and completely miserable if you suck or can't suffer fools.
One more derelict boat remove. Sure hope it was restored and not scraped. For the boat has a heavy laid up solid fiber glass hull and worth restoring. Jim Rodgers
There must be an obvious sandbar that is hard to see or the capt does not pay attention nor look at charters or navigation gear. Jim Rodgers
I'm sure your job has its bad days like any job but it seems like being a tow boat captain is a pretty good job.
Thanks!!!
....mmm he was wearing a out of date n worn out - cheap Life vest ... he also had his Dingy strapped to the sail boat
Surely that boat is a complete write off
BW took a beautiful platform and ruined it, IMHO.
That was just an odd tow overall...
Great job captain
Pilings strapped to the side of the sailboat. Sawzalling a mast off onto your boat. Yikes 😢😢😢
amazed it was not sitting on the bottom
almost scratched my boat, more appropriately titled
Another great video Cap'n. Keep up the good work and Happy New Year!
Only beer can allow things like this to happen. Fortunately, it also prevents the partiers from being injured. Sadly, it does nothing to help people nearby or innocent mangrove swamps, or blameless and innocents boats. Tragedy.
Great job as always Capt Ken. Can't wait to get back to Florida. It's to cold up here. Jan 2nd oh yeah. Lol
-Never seen that before. -Well, it is a Bayliner. :)
I like watching the way you problem solve and watching the different ways you rig in these salvage videos. Stay safe, sir
they must have been using the back side of the saw blade sailors????
Poor Sweat Pea! When I worked on a farm I'd get sooo bored running the tractor up and down the field.
Nicely done👍
Thanks dj!
I'm uneducated on this, but why isn't he closer to the boat? Seems like it would blow more sand.
To shallow. My props would be hitting bottom
It looks like blue water in fron of the bow. Other than running gear and prop issues I'm supprised he didn't wash out from the bow.
@@OneOut1 it was sitting in 1ft of water. Definitely not "blue"
As soon as you arrived I thought “comealongs from the poles to the stern corners to get the gunnels above the water and start pumping”. Next thing I know you’re digging out the gear.🤗 Obvious to me this wasn’t your first rodeo. Well done Skipper.👍
Lol 😂 Thanks Mark! I guess it's not your first rodeo either then 😉
By the way I've been in the boat and yacht building industry for over 30 years at different places from intrepid to Hatteras
Add a yard I worked at in fort Lauderdale which I will not name, we put together high-end Viking yachts that were shipped to us in a package. Even if I had the money I wouldn't buy a Viking
What would you buy? I've had a few other builders tell me the same thing about the different boats they've built. I guess anything that's "mass produced" is going to have issues that the builders will know of but the end user may not necessarily know or care about
no, it's still locked.
Standing in line with the tow line!
Why he uses a bridle.
@@franksackett2584 Mind the bight.
Not really an issue. The line has a much higher working load than the boat can generate and it's also designed to reduce snap back
Anti climax thanks for shit
Isn't fuel more buoyant than water?
Yes it is... But what does that have to do with this?
It still increases the displacement of the total system.
How much does something like this cost?
Free... But only because he had a membership. If he didn't, it would've been somewhere around 12-1500

ok they sorta almost crushed your boat, will upvote as long as not clickbaiting me lol
I love them zuki's, wish u would give us some more info it's so quiet,!
What "more info" do you want me to give?
4 gilfs a pontoon boat and beer what could go wrong ????
I'm surprised you guys don't use a kinetic rope like we use in off roading. It stretches allowing you to get a running start and use that inertia to pull the boat without yanking on it. Yes, in this case, you were intentionally pulling softly, but even with this, it softens the pull. But if you had a boat you couldn't pull off, the inertia would help. If you want to know more, watch Matt's Off Road recovery, when he is pulling cars from sand.
They work great for on/off road recovery but not marine work. They don't float, so all of the kinetic energy is wasted pulling it back up through the water
@@CaptKenO Ah, interesting. Thanks for the reply.
@@Look_What_You_Did I realize he did not need more force at this time, my question was more of a general one, not specific to this situation.
@@DaveinetI'm not a professional so you can take my comment with a grain of salt. I do not like a rope that stretches too much. There is people on the boat and if that rope breaks or a cleat fails it's like a bazooka coming at you.
Hope you have a unaground and Merry Christmas.
Thanks Russell! Merry Christmas to you too 🎄
I you could mount a quick release to the stern line you wouldn't have to cut the line. The equalizing could be done with the bow line. You did a very good job , being alone.
Thanks Russell! Really just needed a better towline and tow post...and it to not to be my first time ever doing it 😂
No buoy Markers?
Not every 10ft, but they're there
I grew up in Sarasota and spent a lot of time fishin there. There's no end to the idiots getting themselves in trouble on boats. I've seen a couple vehicles sunk at the 10th St ramp and all kinds of drama there. I moved away in the end of 08 and I've visited a couple times since. There are more idiots than ever.
The end of 10th Street used to be the ramp on a stormy night a car drove right off the end of the ramp and was followed by many more cars lot of people drowned there that night because of their poor vision in the storm
@randaltotten9358 that's terrible. I remember a little ramp over by the old library building that had its share of drama, and the one on City Island was good for seeing some morons. But I've never seen anything like 10th St. It used to be crazy on weekend afternoons. I moved to Central America in the end of 08 and I haven't done any boating in Sarasota since. So I don't know if anything has changed. But that ramp really needed cops to hang out there when it was busy. I've seen many shouting matches there and I'm sure fights have occurred.
Yep. But those idiots keep me employed 😁
nice job captain
Thanks haywood!
Bill is awesome commentary, thank you for leaving that part in. Good stuff
4’ draft.Wow.
I don't think he actually drew 4.5ft...I draw 2.5 and hit bottom, and he definitely wasn't sitting 2ft out of the water
While in 41 inches of water? Somethings not adding up.
Yeahhhhh... That math doesn't math🤦🤣 Besides, depth finders read in decimal feet not inches 🤷
Washing out the props should have been set up closer to the transom. The transmission, engine mounts could be damaged when the props impact the bottom in reverse.
Couldn't get closer without hitting bottom myself
Always know your draft n the depth of water come on people
But how would I get work if people didn't screw up? 🤔😂
props come out a lot easier if you put the engines in neutral and pull the stern sideways. that way they rotate & walk in the direction you're pulling rather than act like anchor flukes. Something that size would be more likely to come out with the engines in neutral and pulling the bow sideways toward the channel. have as much weight as is possible moved to one side of the boat or the other, which will slightly lift one prop. It will usually pivot on one prop or the other
Engines should always be in neutral regardless of which way you're pulling but no. When the stern is facing deeper water, isn't buried, and relatively close, it's much easier to pull them out backwards rather than trying to spin them around... Especially since in doing so, you'll pull the stern into the shallow water as it pivots
Never been ale to get a boat out like that i always grag the front hook and it pulls it around and out.
Usually that's how I do it too, but when they're perpendicular to the deeper water with their stern towards the deep water and not too far, it's easier to pull them backwards
I can’t believe you can dig up the beach like that with your prop wash and not be fined for it
I'm glad you're not in charge then... If you think a sandbar is a beach and I should be fined for doing my job 😂
Don’t you just screw up the props and rudders?
Not if you pull slowly and wash out under the boat like I did
