Seleukid Lecture Series 9_1: The Book of Judith & Greek Education in Seleucid Judaea by St. Burstein
"The Book of Judith and Greek Education in Seleucid Judaea"
By Professor Emeritus Stanley Burstein, California State University, Los Angeles
Respondent: Rabbi Dr. Benjamin Scolnic, Southern Connecticut State University
SLS 9.1 (15 January 2025)
Abstract
Scholars have increasingly recognized that Greek, both spoken and written, was more common in Hellenistic Judaea than was once believed. The focus of most of this scholarship has been on Greek translations and adaptations of texts written originally in Hebrew or Aramaic such as, for example, Esther or the Wisdom of Ben Sira. Less studied has been the education available to the translators because the texts they read cannot be identified. An exception is the Book of Judith. This talk will consider the knowledge and use made of Greek historical texts by the author of the Book of Judith.

Seleukid Lecture Series 7.6: Generating Infantry for Seleukid Field Armies by Paul Johstono, 19/6/24
มุมมอง 1487 หลายเดือนก่อน
Studies of the Seleukid military have tended to focus on field armies in the great campaigns. In considering how soldiers and formations came to be in those armies, scholars have tended to assume one of several explanations. The most common is that most soldiers came on account of individual obligations tied to their possession of allotments of land in military settlements. Others consider that...

"Wealthy Seleukids?" by Professor Alain Bresson (University of Chicago) with Expert Feedback by Oliver Hoover (American Numismatic Society) There is seemingly a consensus among scholars that the Seleukids were wealthy. There are good reasons for that. Their kingdom was by far the largest of all the Hellenistic states. With the exception of Egypt, it included the richest provinces of Alexander’s...
