Thank you for sharing your WHW adventure. It was an inspiration for me to to the West Highland Way in September 2023. Greetings from Poland.
Hi, thanks for the comment. I hope you enjoyed the trail as much as I did.
@@richmcg Hello. Thank you. Yes I did enjoy the WHW very much. It was amazing.
Really enjoyed the video Some great photographs, i specially enjoyed those around Shap,. Also congratulations on NOT saying you're in the Yorkshire Dales when you crossed over the M6 lol. Look forward to watching the next video 👍
Thanks, Peter, glad you enjoyed it
This is literally down the road from me ( the bears paw ) I absolutely love the sand stone trail.
Well done, your videos are clean and to the point no music just highlights each day. Looking forward to doing it again September.
Hi, thanks for your comments and encouragement, very kind. September is not far off now so I hope your still planning on going again, enjoy
I’ve booked at that YHA for my C2C £12 I’ve paid. Can you ask for breakfast when you arrive? I didn’t add it on. No evening meal I take it? Thanks
Day 10 saw a very steep 1 in 6 hill to climb out from the Rail Station at Gromont before taking a nice easy pace passed the Waterfall in the woods then onto the Coastal Path into Hawsker and the final few miles along the Cliffs facing the North Sea and to finally end the Hike at down at the beach at Robin Hoods Bay. Would I do it again..... yes a few years later , BUT this time in an East to West direction just as I had previously done with the Original South to North Pennine Way and then a follow up route one year later of North to South Pennine Way. I enjoy recapturing my youth with your crossing of the Coast to Coast and wish you well with any future Hikes you have planned. Tony the Retired Hiker of Long Distance Paths of the UK.
Day 9 saw me in the middle of the North Yorkshire Moors mid way between the Mount Grace Priory and the Red Lion near Glaisdale Moor so at the end of the Day I looked forward to a pint or two at the Red Lion ... I did eventually get those drinks and after a sound night sleep I set off for Graisdale, Egton Bridge, and finally arrived at Gromont for a day of rest on the Yorkshire Moors Railway reliving my teenage years as a fan of Steam Trains.
Day 9 Left the Blue Boar Pub (approx 8am after my morning Coffee) and climbed up and over the first hill towards Mount Grace Priory before going onto The Yorkshire Moors, up hill and down Dale was what I thought at the time, but at least is was warm and sunny (Mid July when I did it) heading for the Roseberry Crossing a disused Rail Line to the Iron Ore Mines in the middle of nowhere, a slight breeze kemp me cool for most of the day.
Day 8 Left Richmond and headed East stopping btiefly at Brompton on Swale to visit the Churchyard to view the Gravesite of a man reputed to be 150 yrs old (there used to be a brief history of his life in the Church Doorway, but I do not know if that is still there) The next day all I had in mind was the next 20 mile via a road walk (NO Footpaths open in that area at that time 1976) to the Pub at Danby Wiske forr y overnight camp behind the Blue Boar Pub.
Day 7 I opted for the High Level route to Richmond rather than the river walk and in the heat of the day I enjoyed the breeze I got which would not have been there if I opted for the River side hike. Overnight stay in a B&B in Richmond cost me £5. That was the end of my first week with another possible5 to 7 more days left.
Day 6 Kirkby Stephens to Keld via a very steep climb up past the Nine Standards (which I remember from my Pennine Way Hile) and the loverly stoll down into Keld for an overnight on the campsite (Single tent so that cost me 75p)
Hi, Tony, I was just watching this video again and noticed your comments. Though the trail is pretty much the same as it was when you did it, the prices certainly aren't 😅. Still, as you know, it's a fantastic walk and creates some wonderful memories.
Day 5 Left Shap crossed over the rail line then off across the Moors to Orton in the rain. Then onwards towards Smardale Viaduct then a nights B&B in Kirby Stephens.
Day 4 for me was up and Helvellyn just because it was there then onto Mardale Common via Patterdale and High Street, then along the Haweswater Resv to Shap Abbey before heading of to Shap for a nights camp in the Pubs Garden.
Day Three was Stonetwaite up the hill and over the top to Grassmere then onward to Grisedale Tarn for my overnight Camp on Day 3.
Day two for me was a short stroll over the top of Honister Pass, a gentle stroll down by the stream/river, through the village to end my short day at Stonetwaite Campsite, I nice quiet site I have returned to every now and again to recharge my Memory banks of the Peace and Quiet of Borrowdale Valley. Tony the Retired Hiker in Essex.
I have hiked this route twice in the past, first was my West to East crossing a few weeks befor joiing the Army in 1977 and later after I left the Army in 1980 I returned to do a East to West crossing. I loved every step of the Hike and I now spend my retirement watching others hike it and pass on my memories of doing it 40+ years ago. I started at about 6am and hiked to Ennerdales Black Sail YHA on the first day. Boy oh boy was that a steep climb up and over Dent. After a quick Pint in the Pub at the end of the Ennerdale Water I carried on to Black Sail YHA. Wow the scenery was like nothing I had seen before and it was so quiet, just the gurgleing of the streams that I passed. On my first West to East crossing I too followed the left hand bank of Ennerdale Water. On my second crossing a few years later I opted for the Right hand side of the Valley. I found that so much more enjoyable. Tony the Retired Hiker in Essex.
WOW £30 a night in the YHA at Ennerdale, I paid £1.75 at Black Sail but that was a long time ago and it include Bed for the night, Evening Meal, Breakfast and they refilled my 3 litre Coffee Flask for £1.50. There were no stone steps leading out of Ennerdale when I did the route and yes its an improvement and will help to stop the errosion of the soil via the protection agains the hundreds if not thousands of passing hikers who use the route every year. Tony the Retired Hiker in Essex.
Great job, loved it that trip and might do it again.
Good memories.
Nice video mate, good on you for attempting this. Sorry about your dad ❤
Thank you for such a nice and thoughtful comment
Great Amazing video, I really enjoyed it you captured the beatiful scenery. Liked 👍😄
Thank you so much
Many thanks for the videos - really enjoyed reliving the walk.
Thanks a lot, Richard. Glad you enjoyed them
I doubt that mobile reception is good for any carrier once you pass the end of Ennerdale Water - apart from the 2 YHAs there are probably no more than 6 or 7 farms up the valley - not worth the investment in the infrastructure. Really enjoying the videos, reliving when I walked the route in 23.
Great video. Really enjoyed watching it. To walk that distance in ten days ! Amazing. Kudos to you. Such an achievement 🙏
Glad you enjoyed it!
We really enjoyed watching part 1 Rich. Great work. Going to watch part two straight away.
Thanks, bro
Nice one Rich. Really looking forward to your journey. Hope you had a great time.
Thanks, Alan, was definitely one of my most enjoyable trails.
Stunning scenery,great viewing....keep it up.🤙
Thanks, Wayne, I've just posted part 2, hope you enjoy
Well done. I hiked the JMW just before catching you on the West Highland Way last year. I had a similar experience, although I really enjoyed the excursions and distractions as I took 10 days plus a zero day in Edinburgh.
Hi, Scott, yeah I probably should have taken a bit more time to fit some excursions in.
Brilliant, thanks for sharing Rich I really enjoyed your vlog just about to watch your Great Glen Way, may the weather Gods be kind to you xxx
Nicely done 👍🏻
Cheers, bro
Hi, Alan, I fancy the Coast to Coast, as I've got some time off in June, but we'll have to see, what about you, mate, any plans?
Really enjoyed that, Rich. I must say that was a brave decision to hike in Scotland in March! Have you anything else planned this year?
Hey, I’m planning a trip and wondering when to go. I’m watching TH-cam videos, and I want it to be green already. Was your trip at the beginning or end of April?
Hi, sorry for late reply, I just rewatched this video and saw your comment. Apologies if you've already been but if not, then throughout April is a good time to consider, May is even better for good weather but be careful of the summer months (July and August) as its busy.
Well done Rich, nice trail vid 👍 I did the GGW a couple of years ago and my own videos. Just subbed 👍 Justin
Thanks, Justin, I was hoping to do The Three Lochs Way, a few weeks ago but have had to postpone it for now
Looks like a great trek! Count me as a new sub.
Hi, Zoomdak, glad you liked the video, many folks from the USA enjoy this trek every year, hope you can too some day
Hi Richie , hope this message finds you fit and well , just wondering if you have Bex’s (the doctor)contact details , I past on my details to her and I was supposed to meet her at the end of the trail but I waited but she never arrived just wanted to see if she arrived home safe and sound, cheers Rich
Hi, Neil, so sorry I've only just read this, no sorry, I don't have any contact details for Bex
Great video Rich. I'm looking to do this later this year, thanks for the great info, take care.
Hi, Alan, I'm so sorry for such a late reply, have you done it yet? I'll enjoy your video when you do, mate
@@richmcg Not yet, I've been busy with work around the house since I got back from America, but I hope to do it before I do the Colorado trail at the end of August
I think this is the most recent video posted. Well done. We are going in September
Well done Rich, and what a pleasure to meet and spend a little time with you x
Likewise, Neil, was great to meet you too
Enjoyable video. I love revisiting those spots. Amazing how the highland weather can turn. We walked it from April 13 - 20 and it was so warm we were down to shirtsleeves most days. We heard there had been snow just a few days before we started.
Thanks, Liz. Yes, there's nothing like Scottish weather, never really know what you'll get till it arrives
A great watch👍. Brought back some good memories. Glad you had an enjoyable walk and that the weather was a bit kinder this time 😊
Yeah, I was very lucky with the weather, dry feet for 96 miles, unbelievable
Well shot video, and very informative.
Thanks for the comments, glad you enjoyed it
Yup, once again I see my house online
Really enjoyed this one mate. Beautiful scenery up there.
Very informative and enjoyable. Thank you for sharing as we're planning on having a go in May
Thanks for your kind words, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. The devil's staircase is not very difficult, even with a full pack.
great video, lots of good info and camera work spot on , new subscriber on that video alone
Awesome, thank you, John
I am doing this trail Easter weekend
Good luck, Jay, signage on the trail is very good
Good job mate. Looks like a nice two day hike, apart from the mud.
Thanks 👍
Enjoyed this Rich, I’ve signed up to run the Sandstone Trail Challenge in May. Really hope the trails have dried up a bit by then, especially as those wet areas are close to the start.
Thanks for comment, Paul, I'm sure it will be drier then, good luck, mate
Great video Rich, really enjoyed that. Did you do it in the spring? I noticed there was still some snow on the tops.
Thanks, Alan, really appreciate getting a comment from someone like yourself, as I have enjoyed watching several of your videos. It was March 2022, but I was lucky with the weather, cool nights but warm days.
Great walk, great company 👍🏻
