Australian Livestock Exports
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 29 ต.ค. 2014
Harold Sealy - WA Farmers' Live Export Meeting 20 July 2018
Livestock Shipping Services' livestock manager Harold Sealy (former ALEC Director and immediate past chairman of the WA Livestock Exporters’ Association):
Following the 60 minutes expose, our industry is facing big changes that should not be under estimated or rushed. The adoption of the McCarthy review has without doubt crippled the export of sheep from WA. There are parts of this review that are sound and with scientific basis, but there are parts that are not. We need Minister Littleproud to realise the process undertaken was flawed.
As an industry we find ourselves in a position as the result of a review that took a mere 28 days to complete, yet it concerns an industry that has exported in excess of 18 million sheep since 2010, with a successful delivery rate of 99.2%. How is 28 days justifiable for an industry worth hundreds of millions of dollars to rural Australia?
Unfortunately, the regulatory changes are focused on ‘nailing those who do the wrong thing’. There is a need for balance to remove bad practice and recognise good practice, as well as the improvements made. It is important that there is a common understanding that best practice regulation does not mean more regulation - but more effective and clearly defined regulation.
How is the Federal Government and ALEC positioned to help our trading partners who are considering other options for supply?
The live export market for sheep was growing and expanding with confidence in sheep production at an all-time high. We saw a market in Turkey that received 198,000 sheep in 2017 wanting in excess of 500,000 sheep in 2018. Because of our current circumstances, can we now deliver what they require?
Since the footage first appeared LSS has completed 3 shipments to 2 different markets with 3 different sets of regulation.
We were the first company to sail with an independent observer, a voyage with no restrictions which lasted for 25 days. The success rate 99.6%.
For our second voyage the densities were lowered by 15%, a decision made in consultation with the Federal regulator, an 18-day voyage and a success rate of 99.7%
On our last voyage, the first to leave Australia following the release of the McCarthy review, we loaded at a density reduction of 32%, lasted 25 days with a success rate of 99.75%. Whilst there were no excessive changes in success, the commercial viability of this last voyage was completely destroyed.
We are focusing on best practice and performance, getting the basics right, paying attention to detail and preparation.
Similar to producers, no matter how well you prepare - the reality of working with livestock can mean that at times you perform below the bar and even your own expectations.
Does this happen on every vessel? No, it does not, as will be verified by the Independent Observers sanctioned as an outcome of the McCarthy Review.
We accept we are being judged and only ask that we are judged fairly and things are put into context.
The industry is much bigger than the Arabian Gulf. Yes, it is true the majority of Australian sheep go there, we have long term markets in Jordan and Israel deeply affected by these changes, growing markets of Turkey, Russia and a resumption of trade to Saudi now hang in the wind.
We must be a reliable consistent supplier of livestock, we cannot be governed by populist views of a minority. Our Governments must govern in the best interest of the nation and its people, not how they will be seen at the polling booth next election.
It is an incorrect assumption and politically mischievous to presume that we can slaughter all the livestock here and send it chilled and frozen.
Apart from thinking that we have the right to determine what people, our customers should eat should we not consider what live animals offer our customers?
We have a responsibility to ensure that our trading partners can trade with Australia knowing that the rules are not going to change and leave them with no food.
Livestock export has been part of the WA livestock industry since 1960, in that time the livestock export industry has continued to work with all parties involved to improve and ensure positive animal welfare outcomes at all times.
The role that our industry plays in around the world is unparalleled. There is something much bigger at stake here then stopping the live export of sheep. If for one minute you believe that these critics of our industry will say ‘now that’s stopped, we will put the banners away” you are mistaken. Stopping animal production and disrupting the very fabric of rural Australia is only the start of what they want.
There is a belief by some that we need to engage, WHY, they hate us and do not care about us, you and your community. We need to be very clear and focused that the only people that can save Live Exports are the people directly affected by what is currently happening.
Thank you for your time.

Australian Livestock Exports - The Animal Welfare Challenge
I know this video is old. But don’t listen to the vegans in the comments saying how “cruel” we treat animals. This channel is the reality of the industry and it’s not as bad as people think.
Doesn’t even look that bad. To the people who are saying this is cruel. Sheep are heard animals, they don’t care.
Go on a cruise to Bali they said it will relax you they said
Live animals is stop 1:13

How can I get the job in this ship I have see man service book ... I am oiler?
Once there they have been filmed being stunned with a 14 lb slege hammer what a way to treat an animal should stop live exports now not tomorrow now.
Fucking horrendous way to treat animals. Animals must be petrified. Bad karma for anyone involved in this evil practice. Can see a lot of the animals are crying. Appalling.

China is a very poor country, they need beef to eat.
Hemmed in like sardines, suffering heat stress, and enduring lots of noise aboard the Al Schuwaikh.
Unglaublich das Tiere wie Dreck behandelt werden.ich hoffe für alle die mit dem elend ihr Geld verdienen.dad es denen und ihren Familien Mal genauso geht.dummes pack

Ban Live Export. China is the only major industrialised nation without major legislation against animal cruelty and yet Australia is exporting live cattle to China. Australia should not be exporting live animals to China or any other country. Please end this trade now !
Do those pens they’re in even get cleaned?? Looks like they’re coated in excrement 🤢
Self fulfilling footage far from the reality. End this trade now. Australia should be ashamed.
