Sometimes Tragedy Happens on a Homestead
Hello 👋
Hi guys
Is the blue box a nesting box?
Yes it is. So far only one hen is laying and she still chooses the ground.
WOW AMAZING THATS GREAT CAMERA 👍👍
Thanks Kevin. It's just a cheap wifi camera but it works well. It let's us watch them from our couch 😊
This should be shown to the ceo's of every food store in america. Last dozen eggs I bought all floated the day I bought them. The best by date on the package had 14 more days. I at this point believe my local store uses empty redated cartons to sell extreamly old nearly rotten eggs.
@@richardkansas5593Oh, that's awful. I'm glad you knew to test them before having to open a bunch of bad eggs. Thanks for commenting. 😊
God bless you sir thank you
Thank you. Many blessings to you as well.
When I was a kid, I loved snow. Not so much anymore. The animals don't seem to mind it too much.
I am with you there Jon. Now it just represents more work to do. As soon as Christmas is over it can go. Have a blessed Christmas Jon.
@simpleacrehomestead I hate driving in it. You guys have a Merry Christmas as well.
❤I MIS THIS KIND OF SINGING❤
@@PollySmith-y2m it is very soothing
Thanks for the review. I am considering that machine. 😊
Thanks for watching! We don't currently have any goats in milk, but when we do, I appreciate having this small and simple milker.
Thanks for sharing this recipe with us. Hope you all feel better soon.
@@MySliceOfHeavenoutdoors Thank you so much! Merry Christmas! 🎄
Very timely, it seems like everyone I'm around is sick with something. Hope you guys get to feeling better for Christmas.
@@jonbussey5353 Thank you Jon and I hope you can keep from catching anything! Merry Christmas! 🎄
@simpleacrehomestead I already did, but I'm pretty much over it.
Glad you're recovering in time for the holidays! 😊
Those are some beautiful chickens. Are silkies a good chicken? I've never had any of them.
Hi Jon. This is our first year with them. They are a smaller chicken and lay smaller eggs, but thy are supposed to be very good for hatching other eggs. For us they are more of a novelty. Cindy seen some of those and the wild hair polish at another farm and fell in love.
@simpleacrehomestead I fought with my wife about getting chickens when we first moved here. We had them growing up, but she had never raised them. She fell in love with a golden Polish she saw, and we've had chickens ever since.
@jonbussey5353 it's pretty hard not to enjoy them.
@@simpleacrehomestead Amen. I think everyone should have a few.
The goat inn looks great! Pickles will appreciate it❤
Thanks so much. Pickles doesn't seem to notice the change lol, but I feel better knowing he has more protection. Thank you for taking time to watch and comment on our video 😊
It's weird how they don't seem bothered by the snow on their bare feet.
So true Jon. I did get this fixed up. I worked on enclosing the Aviary on the weekend.
I think I worded that wrong. I think it's weird that chickens in general don't mind walking in snow. It doesn't seem to bother mine.
Ours don't mind either once they get past that initial snowfall lol
I had guinea fowl. They did the same thing, couldn't get them to roost in the barn.
@@jonbussey5353 I hear that is a problem with Guinea's. Makes them easy Prey.
@simpleacrehomestead They got ate pretty quick.
Oh sorry to hear that.
@simpleacrehomestead it's alright. It was their fault for not going in the coop at night.
@@jonbussey5353 True, very true
You're right about never having enough time. I get about 45 minutes to an hour of light by the time I get home from work, and it seems like I'm always behind.
It really makes it tough doesn't it. I find I am doing what I can during the week and making up as much as possible on the weekend.
How are your hands not frozen?
Lol oh they were. I have such a hard time with gloves. Especially when I am missing some digits. Thanks for watching Jon, always nice to see you stop by.
It's tough when that happens. I give the does a couple of tries, but I've had a few that just weren't good mothers. My goat likes chewing on my clothes too. It's weird.
I do the same. I'll give her another try in a while and hopefully she will catch on. The little Billy is a clown. Thanks for watching and commenting Jon.
Hi sir ! You are making amazing video content. I just watched the video and your video quality is appreciable. I am so impressed by your content, I was analyzing your channel and noticed that You are struggling with video views and video ranking. May I share some tips on how you can achieve your goals?
Thanks for watching
My brother got bit by a goose when we were kids. It was funny.
Lol 😂
Thank you...Does your hole saw have a size on it?
Let me get back to you this evening.
Hello again. I used a 2 inch hole saw but I believe smaller would still work fine. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment 😊
I dont really care for pickled eggs.. but I liked the video! Edit: are quail eggs much different than chicken eggs?
Thank you so much for your kind words and taking the time to watch. I like Quail eggs, I don't find them that different from chicken eggs aside from maybe getting more yoke then white when fried. You start getting more of a different flavour when you start eating waterfowl eggs like duck.
I absolutely love pickled eggs. You got a great snack there.
@jonbussey5353 such a quick snack. Thanks For watching and commenting Jon.
Did the horns fall off?
@@Rebbecca1983 yes they do but in our experience they grew back. I am told that it's because I didn't get the band close enough to the skull.
Work-cation: My Dad always had those for us when we were on summer break, lol.
Lol. What was summer break? I know what you mean Jon 😊. Thanks for watching 😁
Not much wasted space. Looks good.
Some days I wish we had more space, but I know I would just fill it with more work 😉
It was a nice harvest.
We were very impressed
Hi, what an honest film. I would suggest scrubbing all earth off a tubour , slicing it and adding to a stew or a roast or a soup. A little at a time. Jerusalem Artichocke is really rich in good 'gut' stuff like fibre (especially inulin) iron and vit C. J Artichoke is known as a pre-biotic that feeds gut health but our guts need to get used to it slowly otherwise we fart alot!! Put one or two in a stew chopped up, then add a couple to slaws. Sell some and eat some, is my advice :)
Thank you so much for putting so much effort/info into your comment. I love the idea of using it with stews and soups especially going into the winter months. We will definitely give that a try. Thank you for watching.
How do you process them for consumption?
Raw or cooked. Our understanding is that you risk more stomach gas when eaten raw. We just clean them with a brush or peel them.
I loved this video. It was genuine, and full of very good information .
Thank you so much for the kind words. We hope you will enjoy our other videos.
👍
Thank you for watching and giving us the thumbs up. We really appreciate it.
@@simpleacrehomestead I thought about growing this, its wild in the forests near us...but i worried it might not taste great...i just need to find some at the farmers market n try it, lol. thanks again!
You are very welcome 😁
I love them raw, think water chestnut only better. They are great in salads or just as a snack. They,re ok cooked, but super yummy raw. I harvest from a raised bed and replant immediately. I have a dedicated raised bed for these extremely vigorous plants.
I haven't been brave enough yet to try them raw but I think I will eventually try it. Tonight will be the 3rd night in a row that we have ate them fried in olive oil and haven't had any digestive issues. Thank you so much for watching and sharing your experience.
I too am a first time grower of JA. I grew mine in grow bags and are leaving them in there over the winter. I have not eaten any yet since I have some digestive issues at the moment anyway. I APPRECIATE the suggestion about slicing thin and frying like a potato chip. That sound the least "dangerous."
We sliced some up again tonight and friend them in olive oil for a snack. This will be our 3rd night in a row we have snacked on them and so far so good 😊. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment.
I’d rather turn it around so I can collect the eggs without entering into the hen house. I need measurements for that please.
I think all you would need to do is the same size only have the chickens enter from a hole in the back and close of the front. With our winters it isn't an option for us to collect on the outside because the eggs will freeze. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
I been growing these for about 5 years now. I don't eat them as I just prefer potatoes. I grow them as animal feed for my rabbits. They are a great animal feed, the tops and tubers. I cut them back constantly all summer and they still make lots of tubers. Thin sliced and fried like potato chips I believe is best to not get windy lol.
This is great information, we haven't tried feeding any of it to the animals. We will definitely look at this as a supplement to offset some feed costs.. Thank-you
@@simpleacrehomestead Yah there are some great studies showing it as a top notch feed . I've seen studies for rabbit feed and pig feed. and as you see it grows like a crazy weed and does well even in very poor soils. If it grows where you don't want it a lawnmower or cutting it down to the ground a few times will work, just do not use a tiller.
😁 Thank you so much, we will try this.
every gardener needs a digging fork.
So very true! I actually just broke the handle on ours last week. 😥
What rabbit cages are these I want to get some of those they look great!!
Hi, there does not seem to be a name on them but they were originally bought through this web site. Www.berryhill.ca. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Earth apple? 😅 how funny! In my language we actually call it earth pear. We already have an 'earth apple', being a potato. But literally translated, a potato is an earthapple (aardappel) and a sunchoke is an earth pear (aardpeer). How cool 😄
That is very cool 😊. Can I ask what language ? We have finally started eating a little bit the past 2 days. They are tasty.
Great harvest. Do you know what they taste like? I've seen it in the store, but I have never tried it.
It's totally new to us. I am hoping to try some sauteed tonight, part of me wants to wait until the weekend in case I react poorly 😉 Google describes it as a nutty flavour.
@@simpleacrehomestead, I was wondering if you could get them clean enough ( getting the dirt out) that you could shred them on a greater & fry them like home fries? Fried Sun Cakes, sounds tasty.
I just cleaned them with a brush and left the peels on when I fried some up like potato chips last night. So I believe it would work for home fries etc.
Hiya Simple Acre Homestead, that is a great harvest. Good job! I was like wow! Sending ❤🙏
Thank you, it was such a pleasant surprise. ❤️ 🙏
Dang. That's the stuff dreams are made of.
We couldn't believe all the worms... had to quickly get a video :)
Seems like the soil was hard and not loose enough for the bulbs ro bulb out larger. I had that issue once before. Next yr I made sure my soil was loose and not hard and it helped them the bulb up more.
@@CyndiConnard Thank you for the tip. I think you're right! 😊
Hiya Simple Acre Homestead, that is a great idea. Thanks to the little one who helped mom video. Good job! Sending ❤ prayers
You are very welcome. She was thrilled to be able to help. Sending prayers to your home as well.
Can you use a dehydrator instead of a freeze dryer. We use a lot of onion powder.
A dehydrator would totally work the same. Especially if you use a lot. A Freeze dryer would only extend its lifespan. Thank you for watching Jon
@simpleacrehomestead Thanks for the video. This gives me a use for the green part. I don't eat them.
Are those ones in middle beets? I've tried beet powder, not a big fan.
@@jonbussey5353 yes sir they are beets. Definitely not a great flavour on their own.
What is that contraption?!?
It's called a manual crusher/grinder or destemmer.
