I don't believe this is a good self-defense video. First, the attacker's (white Dobok) punches are not on target. Look at the punches beginning @ 0:22. The punches thrown are not in line with the defender's head. They are off to the side. This is evident not just from seeing the punch thrown, but the fact that when the gentleman in the gold Dobok throws his block and makes contact with his attacker's arm, the attacker's arm is not redirected at all, as the purpose of a block is to redirect a strike. If the punches were on target, a block would cause the attacker's arm to veer off in the direction the block was thrown. Defending a simple straight punch is one of the most basic, and important, elements of self-defense, as a straight punch is going to be thrown by people who are both trained and untrained. It is important to learn how to defend a straight punch because unlike an outside in attack, such as a haymaker or a wild swing, you don't have full visibility of the arm and must rely on depth perception to determine the appropriate time to block the strike. Further to this point, the blocks are being thrown not to stop the punches, but rather the blocks are making contact when the punch is complete, and the attacker's arm is at full extension. There is no need to throw a block then because if the point was to avoid the punch by stepping back, you just made a motion (the block) that does nothing: it neither attacks nor defends. It would have been better to grab the attacker's arm, then pull him forward because at full extension, he may be susceptible to being off balance. But there is no point to blocking a strike that is not on target and is over because the arm is at full extension. It would be much better to have the attacker throwing on target strikes with the defender actually blocking than what is presented in this video.

Coming from karate, I could never get over the idea the lead arm is brought to the chest during a kick 0:35, 0:40. We have formed the habit of either keeping the fist at the rib ready to strike, or keeping it in defensive in a fixed outward block.
