DAMAGE To Apalachicola, FL From HURRICANE Helene? Day Trip On The GRADY-WHITE To Find Out!
Within hours of making landfall, Apalachicola, FL was forecasted to take a direct hit from Hurricane Helene, with winds in excess of 110mph, and storm surge up to 20 ft. At the last moment the hurricane moved east and Apalachicola was spared a direct hit, but was within 50 miles of the eye wall. Three days later, we took the Grad-White over to Apalchicola to see for ourselves how it fared in the storm as well as to spend a few bucks since many people had evacuated and tourist were required to evacuate.
Check out our previous video of our tour of Apalachicola as well as spending the weekend on the Grady for the first time: th-cam.com/video/uyTQUMsuFZY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=0J4TnTz9M_Lye5ko

    • @forgottencoastfishing
      @forgottencoastfishing 8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You should be fine to come. This storm looks like (right now anyway) that it will be to the east of us so we shouldn’t have long lasting impacts. We aren’t planning to evacuate. But things can change. If this storm is a cat 3 or higher and turns more west and we get the north eastern edge of it then we will evacuate. But in any case by end of October things should be fine.

    This is the first video that I’ve ever found of someone posting an Avenger Bay runner. I have a 21 just like yours. I live over in the Fort Walton Beach area. Originally I’m from Louisiana where these were built so we were very very familiar with them over there. It is such an underrated boat. It is built like a tank and solid as a rock. Most people don’t know this but the stringers and transoms in these boats are all composite. Good to see another one out on the water as they are getting to be pretty rare these days. Thanks for sharing and tight lines!!

    • @forgottencoastfishing
      @forgottencoastfishing 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks! Agreed! Great boats, and perfect for what I now do over in Florida. Have you checked out their new boats now that they are built in the Carolina’s? New owner but seems like they kept the great things about the old ones, just modernized them a bit. Mine is a mid 90’s and still as solid as a rock. Thanks for watching!

    • @fishnfreak18
      @fishnfreak18 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@forgottencoastfishing Yes I have seen them. They are not even remotely the same. A man named John Pabst Originally started them in New Orleans. He built them for about 25 years and then after Hurricane Katrina he never really fully recovered. He then sold the molds to Mike Butler who owns Venice marina in Venice Louisiana. Mike then sold them sold the molds To Carolina composites who currently owns it. The new ones are very nice boats but the two are completely different. By the way yours is a 21. They only made a 21 and an 18. I don’t know if you have a Facebook page but I have a brochure that I can send you and it gives a ton of literature if you’re interested.

    I really appreciate this video. Currently looking at a used 2005 and trying to work out a deal. How well does this boat perform in 2-3' seas and in chop? How is your fuel consumption?

    • @forgottencoastfishing
      @forgottencoastfishing 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed the video. This boat does really well in the standard 2-3ft seas. I can still usually go at least 20mph without banging. I can usually keep my fuel consumption between 1.5-2 mpg. I don’t run it hard and keep my eye on the consumption and ride to keep it in that range. Let me know if you think of anything else

      @@forgottencoastfishing I appreciate your response. Your reported mpg's is better than I would have thought. if all goes well I'll have this boat soon. Do you know how many hours these motors will typically last as long as they are properly maintained? I think the boat I am looking at will likely need a repower in a few years as the current engines have 1550 hours on them.

      It corroded a hole through one of the outside walls of the exhaust channel and was blowing hot exhaust air under the cowling. My mechanic said I also had corrosion in other areas and not worth trying to weld which often times doesn’t work. So I found the same engine , but it had water in the fuel system so I had to get that all cleaned out. But so far so good and in the end I think I came out ahead.

    • @forgottencoastfishing
      @forgottencoastfishing 22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Unfortunately the GoPro doesn’t do the rough water justice and it always seems to look less rough. But I’ll tell you what I’ve noticed. It can handle the chop and rough water rally well for not such a big boat. I don’t like to bang and I am usually able to go at least 20mph when it’s decently rough. It’s still not a huge boat and you feel it’s size at times but for its size it does really well. I like the boat since it’s small enough for me to handle by myself, doesn’t take a fortune to take it out, but big enough to feel extremely safe offshore. Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.

      When I use chum which is not that often, I just use the frozen type you can buy. But this trip that was some carcasses of some prior fish I caught. I was mostly taking it out to dump it out there but just put it in the bag for the day just in case it helped, who knows? But I’m thinking I might figure out an easy way to grind up the carcasses and add some menhaden oil, and oats or some recipe i come up with, freeze that and sort of use chum more often. We’ll see.

      Thanks glad you enjoyed the video. Those aren’t stainless steel hooks, I don’t use stainless hooks since I want them to rust out if I get a break off plus it’s illegal.

    It looks delicious. I’ll have to get my scallops at Costco Unfortunately not anything against Costco it’s the the cats pajamas but fresh scallops would be way better.

    They used to be so many scallops in the bay. We would take an old inner tube and wrap it around a number 3 washtub, and inflate it. We'd drag it across the shallow flats at the head of the bay and typically fill it up with bay scallops. This was when it really was the "Forgotten Coast".

    • @forgottencoastfishing
      @forgottencoastfishing หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah that’s what I’ve heard. I only scalloped once more than about 20 years ago, but my wife and her family tell the same story from the 70’s and 80’s!

    Just down the road from you in Callaway. Gotta love those BG reels! You should come over and fish East Bay! You gonna make a video catching scallops? Won't be long!

      Awesome! You’re right about east bay! I’ve fished it a couple times in the winter, it’s an easy ride for me launching at overstreet. Yes definitely going to do a scallop video! And hopefully a catch and cook. Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for the info, nice job. Been looking at a lot of GW 232s and was worried about launching a large beam boat, you did a great job.

    • @forgottencoastfishing
      @forgottencoastfishing หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks! Once I got the boat balanced properly on the trailer it’s not been a problem. At first the boat was set up on the trailer too far back and I didn’t have enough weight on the rear tires of the truck and struggled to get it out of the water, but once I had it moved forward I’ve not had any trouble. Thanks for watching!
