Appalachian Trail Thru Hikers Gear List!
Disclaimer: this video is old! I filmed it in March of 2022, right before I left for my Thru Hike of the AT! In addition, I worked in the Outdoor Education industry and also at REI so I had pro deals and discount for almost all of these items. I recently found it and thought it might be helpful for some people as I completed my entire thru hike with nearly the exact same gear I started with, including all the small luxury items! My pack, in the middle of my hike with a full food bag and water, weighed about 34 pounds.

Nick and I went to Guatemala this past October with plans to travel the whole country. Unfortunately, a political protest broke out causing us to need to leave the country early. We ended up only seeing Antigua and Volcano Acatenango before needing to leave. What was the weight of your merino sleep base layers? GSM? Esp during March-April? And how did it work for you? No female hikers seem to mention this even though there’s a big range.

    I really enjoyed my osprey pack and so comfortable.ive moved on but its still one of my favs. Drop those plastic tips on your poles you will need those points. Did we see a plastic bag liner? Keep that gear dry. Have a great hike!

    Great video and don’t worry about what other “UL” Karens might say. In the end you’re there to have fun hiking a great trail for you. You are the one that’s carrying the gear and you can always send stuff home too. I’m hiking the AT starting in May myself with 30 lbs on my back. Have fun and Live Life!!

    You seem to have a handle on things. Good choices I do believe, especially the town dress. For myself, I am a dinosaur and use a Kelty Tioga external frame pack, so don't fret over the Osprey choice. I'm old. :) I have found that some of the ultralight stuff fails after a bit or can be rather fragile. I have some such gear, mostly minor items. My pack weights run from the 30s to 40s these days although a long while ago fifty or more was not unusual. Good fortune go with you on your journey! Enjoy the experience, if you can. :)

    Osprey is the gold standard of packs imo. A bit heavier than the UL stuff, but great choice!

    Excellent choices! Do you have a small shovel to dig cat holes? If you are sending packages ahead I would send to a hostel rather than post office which have restricted hours. Crocks are a great choice for not only camp shoes but also water crossing. Good luck. Frozen Belt class of 2023.

    Nice video. A Fanny pack may be a good option for the small things you want easy access. What was your base weight? Do you have good waterproof gloves - I may have missed? Another thing that might be nice for March are waterproof socks? Best wishes on your journey.

    Hey Laura, your gear is absolut good. And yes - it‘s nice🎉 Don‘r worry about what other people think. And who wants to roast you? This is expansive gear and it will do it‘s job. I enjoy your gear, because all the super ul fancy DCF stuff is the always same - I love individual gear. Here in Germany wildcamping is forbidden, so less people use DCF tents, we need tents on dark green or brown. Otherwise we‘ve to pay up to 10.000 € when caught.😮 And who made the „only 1 luxury-item“? Your hike - your rules. There is a life beyond gramcounting 😉Enjoy and come back healthy & happy. Happy trails from Germany ❤

    So when you get to camp you will need to empty your pack to get to your tent? Think rain! Another thing you will discover is that all of your plastic bags will not last too long as stuff sacks. Purchasing waterproof stuff sacks in a range of sizes and colors will work better and go the distance! Oh yeah, waterproof rain cover for your pack is critical, especially if it rains all day. Rainmaker ☔

    You can forgo the Smokies printed permit with a National Park Pass? I hope so because that will make things easier. Thanks for sharing

    • @JeffreyMclamb-u4u
      @JeffreyMclamb-u4u 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I’m planning on hiking on 2026 so I thought the same thing that it would be nice. So I googled it to make sure. It says you can’t forego Shenandoah or smokies permit with national park pass. NP pass is intended for entry into park while the permits need for AT hikers are intended for backcountry camping.

    The rubber tips on your trekking poles are intended for indoor use - you really want the exposed carbide tips to engage the ground, stones, slick wood, etc., when you are hiking outdoors. The rubber tips will slip like crazy on wet stone and wet wood!!!

    • @Maryann110
      @Maryann110 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Rubber tips also good for walking on paved surfaces. Eliminating the annoying clickity clack.

    • @justjonoutdoors
      @justjonoutdoors 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Maryann110 True, however the carbides will still engage better and slip less. I find the “annoyance” of carrying/keeping track of the rubber tips to be significantly higher than a little “clickety-clack” cruising down a road walk section…

    • @Maryann110
      @Maryann110 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@justjonoutdoors point taken, however I wasn’t referring to the clicking annoying you but others nearby.

    • @dmsmith321
      @dmsmith321 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The carbide tips will wear thru the rubber really quickly. Then you’re right back to the clickity clack, annoying or otherwise.

    As long as you are happy with your gear and it works like it’s supposed to, that’s all that matters. As far as your pack , Osprey is a great choice, and as long as it is comfortable to you, that’s all that matters. It’s your hike , enjoy it and don’t go broke doing it. Good luck , we will be watching you.

  • @jamesadams2334
    @jamesadams2334 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Osprey is a good pack, not the lightest but depending on the hiker, usually comfortable. Don't worry so much about the weight, most gear today is fairly light to start with. Back in the day, nothing was light weight and on my first thru hike in 1990, my pack was 72 pounds on Springer. My second thru hike in 2002 my pack was down to 31 pounds. The town dress is a great idea. I kept a gallon Ziploc with a T shirt and shorts just for town. Your equipment sounds good and remember, more hikers have completed the A.T. with packs over 35 pounds than under 35 pounds. Best advice that I can give is start slow and build to higher mileage. Good luck! Hike safe, Hike strong, Have fun! geek

    I agree with you regarding the rain pants. Nothing like them in the morning to keep wet weeds off your legs. A 2L water bag and 1L pepsi bootle equipped with a hydration hose keeps water ready at the shoulder strap. Water purification tablets are a nice addition for B/U. Trust me water filters are left behind, dropped a long the trail. The drops packed in separate location will save you.

    I think you had good equipment! I thru hiked in 2024 and can say that you don’t need super light weight expensive gear. I had some expensive gear fail throughout the trail. The black diamond poles for me were awesome! Great video and keep hiking!

    A lot of people in Philippines don’t know how to swim. I went to a waterfall and everyone just sat around the edge hanging on to stay afloat. I ask people and most don’t know how to swim. Also when you are in Thailand you will see thousands of single women backpacking. It’s very safe there and don’t be worried going out to local food markets
