Hi Cap'n Marc, I'm curious as to what's your rationale for why you don't run flashers on riggers? Thanks
Great information thanks for sharing! I’m just starting to learn about trolling and hoping to use the method changed up a bit for striped and white bass here in the Midwest. Tight lines to ya captain!
Thanks for the great videos. We have just started getting into salmon fishing. If you were running a 4 rod spread, 2 diver 2 riggers. Would you run spoon only on riggers and flasher/fly on diver ?
@@Fishsurf - you can run the flasher fly on both riggers and divers. I personally have great success with them on divers.
@@KingsLandingSportFishingokay great. I was trying to find the glo sick to buy off your site but it isn’t listed … will it be sometime soon ?
@ - I’ll get some made up again. Just sold out.
Two single hooks work well
Nice video, valuable tips, thanks Captain
I read it is not as reliable due to batteries. Had Fishawk X4D before, quit due to expense of loosing the probe, increased down rigger blow back. I can judge my underwater troll speed by down rigger cable deflection. Not worth the hassle and cost. Now experimenting with Garmin LVS62 on Lake Ontario salmon fishing
I want this set up!
the glow tinsel is like opaque uv during the day gives the fly a bigger thicker look during the day be careful it comes in different colors
I've found over the years, that a REALLY charged up lure doesn't catch - they have to be semi-charged to be lethal - what's your take?
I find that strong charge only lasts for a minute or two… Then the baits are that semi charged state that you talk about. That said I used to have these spoons from BC with crazy glow and they hammered fish.
won't that mess up your reel bearings by spinning the reel so fast? I question that too when I'm getting my reels spooled at the tackle shops with their machines. Just asking, because this year is the mass re-spool year for me too.
I probably do it at a medium speed vs a high speed. To date I’ve not had any issues… I think the one issue could be warm out click pins over time but that also happens from fish peeling drag and they are a serviceable part on all the reels I’ve seen.
Do you offer just 8 inch single fin blank chrome flashers? I didn't see any on your website. If so how much $
@@davekoistinen3008 - yes… Email me at kingslandingfishing@gmail.com and I can help you out.
Great video as always. I always look forward to all the new content. Very informative and helpful to the weekend warriors that want to learn. While I was trying the drill and bottle method out. I noticed that if you substitute the bottle for an empty line spool and add a couple of large washers to the bolt. You can spool up the line on the spool and keep it for other uses. Great idea with the drill power. Creative laziness at its finest!
Lets face face it. The fish were biting last year. Hard to narrow top 10.
Thanks again. All 8" by the look of it? What length lead do you prefer? Usually about paddle length x 3?
Yup, 3X paddle length.
You dont run a white paddle deep on your rigger after sun up? Just stay near the thermocline all day? What size flasher and length to fly do you like? Thanks for the info Marc!
@@redred2772 - white or glow paddle with meat is typically on my deep rigger. Not with a fly. Flies are typically 23-26” in leader length.
@@KingsLandingSportFishing 8 inch then, Thanks. I'm going to try that stager flasher, those dark fish have lockjaw with me!
@@redred2772 - yup. Most of my flies are on the 8” flasher or the new 9” I have on the website.
Well done, I’m going to do that from now on
Love it, please continue this series. We're on the southside, oswego area, and don't get out to the blue zone much, but these discussions help me identify patterns, and also give me ideas for my own lure painting hobby.
Genius!
Great information here, thanks so much! Just curious do you still run 5/7 lead and short steel when you’re fishing for kings in the summer just in case you catch a steelhead or coho up high or are those setups reserved for fishing way offshore?
@@noahh5464 - do, plus earlier in the season and after a lake flip they can be super productive for kings also!
Love the offseason tip vids. I wish I could actually target and catch more coho. Usually just incidental catches. I use a couple of the spoons you showed out there as well. Mainly MS UV mixed veg. Also, one of my best rainbow spoons out there (not so much coho) is the old Evil Eye silver with blue lightning bolt. I found a guy at a show last year that had about 8 of them and bought them all lol. Also, you didn't mention it, but one thing I also have found to really help is having at least one flasher (usually green or blue dolphin Spin Doctor) in the spread. Even if it is a spoon bite, it helps to bring them into the spread. I have experimented taking it out of the spread when they will only hit spoons and the hits seem to drop off. When I put it back in, the hits pick up again. It's a sacrificial line out to me. The other thing that seems to help out there is the hammered chrome shark. I currently only have one, but it seems to me (although not conclusive) that some days the chrome side takes more hits than the green pancake side. Curious what your thoughts are on the flasher and shark. Gonna definitely try out the chinook diver. Thanks for all the good info.
I typically always have a flasher fly or a flasher meat out so I do have a flasher in the spread. As for the chrome shark… I don’t run them, so I can’t comment - sorry.
Great tip Thanks
Simple. Genius!
That's pretty cool Mark.
Nice. I'm in the market for one. Always used a camera flasher, but mine crapped out this year and I've been doing the same flashlight thing. Pretty annoying when you just want to get lines down. Going to try one of these for next season. Thanks.
HaHa, that's you wishing it was July 11th. LOL. Love your solid info and tips. You should have 40k subs. Keep the good info and tips coming. Thanks.
Thank you…. July can’t come soon enough!
JULY 11 Dude, what you smoking
@@gordonmohr2268 - No smoking anything here, but probably wishing it was July 11th.
@@KingsLandingSportFishing 👌✌
Great tip Marc, its a why didn't I think of that tip. If you want the perfect amount of line on say a lead core use two bottles. Fill your reel in reverse - bottle to bottle then back to reel.
@@redred2772 - I hear ya… super simple tip… I used to wind the line onto a bottle by hand… what was I thinking?
I just use a stick. If I’m really in a hurry l’ll wrap in a few pieces to increase the diameter. When I’m done I’ll buzz it with the torch to make sure it’s never a problem.
We need a best lures of 2024 episode !
It’s coming shortly…
I use them. Great for braid. OR18 on the back works well with it. Don't have to wrap.
I’ve upgraded my boards to use these…. HAWG Release for Planer Boards - such an awesome upgrade! th-cam.com/video/QDU779_5a0I/w-d-xo.html
Good demo 👍🙏🏼
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
I noticed the red reflecting tape on your board was wondering what kind of tape it was?
@@polesetter5904 - it’s just a bright red vinyl that I use to quickly identify right and left.
Hi Mark. Just wondering if you had a chance by now to use the Smarttroll probs with your slide divers, especially lite bite, and your thoughts. Does it have a negative impact with the performance of the diver’s function?
@@gtcih no issues with the slide divers. I use red clips with pins to clip the probe right before the diver.
That is how Salmon Catcher rigs downriggers. Flasher is attached directly to the ball and bait is 5’ above it. Fish this way for many years. BTW flasher spins at much faster rate almost like a meat rig.
Here in WI we call these pump rod sets ups. I like to use torpedo diver clip on weights by torpedo fishing products on mag size boards with sam's pro release clips. Russell Gahagan talks about this set up to. Great video, always great learning new techniques from seasoned anglers on the great lakes.
Thanks! I’ve used the torpedo diver weights and think they’re great too.
From US Robert
Great show and thank you
Appreciate the watch!
My understanding is that rings allow you to get down to the desired depth with LESS LINE OUT.
@@michaelmoller5218 - unfortunately that’s not the case. They plane the diver away from the boat but don’t add depth.
Awesome, I love the tubing idea. Thank you!
You need to try brads baits they work very well especially of dipseys
Hi, will be wonderful if you can make the same test with Deep six divers, medium or large size, thanks.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any deep six divers.
@ It's ok, thanks for the good job you did with Dipsy.
Hi captain. Your videos are excellent. You offer so much information. I appreciate that since I am new to salmon fishing on Lake Huron. We also use the 50 50 method. My son was asking the significance of the 50 foot from the weight. Why not less? Does the weight of the spoon and 50 feet of line add to the depth significantly.
Mark, any recent update? It is August 26. Much thanks.
How long can it stay good in salt borax brine ?
I leave it for 2-3 days… Too long and it goes mushy.
Why are you not posting as many updates as usual?
Unfortunately I’ve been way too busy and struggling to keep up with everything and the updates have suffered this year. My apologies…
@@KingsLandingSportFishing I just enjoy watching your reports. I’m from Sudbury and only make one or two trips a year but you really help me out thanks
Hi Marc. I saved this video last year and I’m watching it again this year after 3 days of an empty box on Lake Huron. My son and I are still learning how to salmon fish. I’m considering using a flasher behind the ball as an attractor and two stackers (Chamberlain) above with lures. Is this technique common or advantageous. Thanks
@@gtcih not super common. I honestly never run it that way…
on spoons do you recommend adding a ring on them or do you remove the ring and just attach the spoon directly to the clip swivel ?
@@markcameroon6613 - I leave them however they come from the manufacturer.
Mark, when you say 188 mag diver or 222 mag diver, these are your lengths out in feet?
@@teunisvanderknaap1151 - correct
Captain Marc, as someone who has caught more Salmon on Lake Ontario than I've probably ever seen in my life, do you have a favorite (or a few) recipe for Coho or Kings, or even Steelhead to share?
I keep it pretty simple… Cedar plank with some seasoning or my wife sometimes makes a great miso salmon. I did try a bear battered salmon earlier in the year and it was pretty tasty as well. I have a buddy that cold smoked it and it is fantastic!
@@KingsLandingSportFishing thank-you! I have some cedar planks, and have never tried it, I can't wait! Miso and beer-battered sounds like a good idea too, thanks so much!
You mentioned weather. A tornado landed in Fort Erie and did considerable damage 2 hours ago.
@@jimlem2075 - crazy weather this summer
Also throwing in a comment might help. Great content
@@steveg2509 - thank you
