The bag held up very well and I would highly recommend it! Although it smelled terrible by the time I was done with the hike. If you have the option of using a 0 degree bag during winter and 40 degree during summer that would be best but the 20 degree seemed to be the best warmth for using just a single bag for the entire hike.

That was certainly my initial plan but once I met up with a trail family we started having a more structured plan each section! Also once you get about half way you start doing the math and recognizing that you need to start doing a certain amount of mileage each day if you are going to reach Katahdin before it closes.

@@matthewmayerhikes i understand the logistics issues. I am glad you completed your goal! I have seen SO MANY focused on miles. Everyones journey and purpose on the trail is different. I was out there for connection. Hiked south in August 2017 from Erwin. I didnt reach Springer without taxi cabbing (i had a month), but, I got what I needed from the experience. Maybe someday I can do a thru hike. I do EVERY blue blaze I can, I want to see it all! 😊 But, I live near the trail, so logistics are simple...it helps when your buddy owns a hostel too.

Thank you! Although after I started hiking alongside a group I began being more aware of my mileage and setting goals.

We always used FarOut to determine our trail mileage and plan out our days. It is a great app for the Appalachian Trail!

Thanks! This was an especially dry year which made finding water sources a bit tricky but it was nice not having to deal with rain everyday!

I switched over to the Hoka Speedgoat 5! They felt great for ankles but the toe box is very narrow and caused some blisters on the outside of my pinky toes.

I typically carried out 3-5 days of food while on the AT. There were a few times when I was able to push 6 days but was usually stuffing stuff into the front mesh or side pockets to make it work. Looking back I wish that I had a slightly larger pack to accommodate more food!

It definitely made the second half of the hike much more enjoyable being with a group of friends!

@@matthewmayerhikes I bet it did! I always do better when I'm hiking with my friends. We can push one another up the next hill or the next mile.

It was definitely one of the highlights of Virginia! And you can knock all three out in 1-2 days!

@Matthew Mayer Hikes I think there is a 30ish mile loop maybe. Might take me 3 days but would be a blast with some friends.

Hi Rob! I am still on trail and currently in northern Maine! I had some issues with iCloud and got a bit behind on editing and uploading but should get at least one out each week.

@@matthewmayerhikes That's great Matthew. I thought maybe you had to bail. I hope you can eventually post your videos. I know myself and others would love to see your journey and hear about any insight you have to an AT thru hike.

I started early April! I wish that I had started sooner so that I could have spent more time in towns and going a bit slower. I haven’t been a huge fan of the EVLV pack but it’s doing the job. I spoke with Darwin during Trail Days and he doesn’t use the pack anymore even and he designed it!

It was a great spot! I’m sad the storm didn’t allow me to camp there overnight but we did get Ms Janet to bring us some pizza up there!

The southern part of the AT doesn’t have much rock scrambling but once you enter into Pennsylvania it gets very rocky!

I was against the trail names also but now that I’m on trail it makes it so much easier to associate names to people rather than just using “Joe” or “Samantha” or “Bob”. Especially since you meet so many people each day and they might have met those same people several days before. If they mention just “Joe” then that could be anyone but if they mention “Day Walker” then I immediately know who they’re talking about and likely met the same person a few days prior.
