I live in a railroad town, and I have been a long haul driver. Each one of those intermodal containers can carry 7 to 9 truck loads of food. One truckload is 45,000 pounds. each of those double stack can weigh as much as 14 45,000 pound trailer loads add it up, 7 locomotives are needed to get that much weight up over those hills. The first hill west of Cheyenne is a s5eep one that will slow down a truck. the trains climb that same one.

Please display how the cars are hooked / jointed before the engine is set. Thanks a lot.

In US you require 5-6 diesel engine, In Bharat, we have a WAG12.. 😆

Grain train? There are almost no hoppers? And 2 of the 7 engines were in dead mode and didn't pull.

I have never understood how steel wheels on steel track could pull up a steep grade with a heavy load without slipping. Even on a dry day you would think it would just break traction and come to a halt.

How many steam locomotives would it take? Not many.

Those weren’t grain cars. They are soda ash cars from Green River Wyoming. Going to Terminal 4 in Portland.

Those engines only turn generators that make electricity for the electric motors (trucks) attached to the wheels.

They aren't all running. So how many does it take when they get going up the steep parts?

Living in Maine where we seldom see a train (or at best a short Amtrak one) the sight of such a huge train is amazing.

How many loafs of bread can you make from one car full of grain?….no…. why are some locomotives facing backwards and while others face forwards?

Only 3 or 4 are in power the others are idling just there to be relocated. Can't have more than 3 or 4 in power or a knuckle will break.

Had to be an empty grainer. Trains that long require DPUs when loaded. Plus, the last 4 locos were in idle or offline completely. Cant run that much power on the head end.

And still don't consume as much fuel as my sister does!! My grocery bill says so! I get $ 10 per trip to the toilet!!

Why do American engines continually make so much noise with bells a horns/hooters. If a maintenance team is working on the line there will be/should be a safety officer and train times will be known. ? Understandable approaching an unmanned road crossing or an area frequented by the public. If you are standing on a rail road you well feel a train approaching. Hear the rails sing.

The diesel engines power generators. The electricity generated power the electric motors on the trucks. They are Diesel Electric, not Diesel locomotives.

One Big boy used to do that alone.

I am a retired engineer from BNSF. Those trains that have several locomotives on the head end are being transported to another location. I usually set those unused locomotives to dynamic braking if they are capable. Even within the assigned consist there will be locomotives are ordered to be disabled, fuel savings. The train orders define which locomotives may be used. The railroad likes to utilize a ratio of 1.1 hp to 1.3 hp per ton. Some of those locomotives are mechanically defective and are destined for a maintenance facility and are tagged as such. To an outsider, it only appears these locomotives are required. To us, they are just another car along for the ride. The best use of those locomotives is for extra crewmen or deadheads that going back there and get some sleep!
