That’s a shame you had that experience. We broke down in our mobile home when visiting Greymouth/West Coast. 27 years ago, winter, no tourists, in the middle of nowhere, pre mobile phones/coverage . No vehicles passing for hours. The first one was a lovely man from the North Island returning home from a wedding. Drove us directly to the petrol station nearly an hour north, offered to drive us back 😯 which we thought was generous but would be unreasonable for us to take, hitch at the station entrance, bus full of NZ net ballers offered to drop us off at our van as they go south, found out we were Australian (Australia just beat NZ in the finals 😬), to,d the bus driver to stop and kick us off 😂 and had a laugh and fun for an hour before we reached our mobile home. It felt so safe travelling NZ all those years ago and so grateful for the generosity and kindness we were shown for two weeks travelling this beautiful place on earth.

Just came back from this hike 4 days ago, i did the whole thing in one day and it took everything out of me to complete it. The sand, dust, extreme elevation and exhaustion esp the final push to the summit is a killer. Do not come under prepared.
