New York-based flutist originally from Tokyo, Japan.
Haruna’s straightforward, joyful, and powerful playing style is inspired most by her legendary teacher and mentor Frank Wess.
Haruna’s first album as a leader was released in 2010. She has also appeared on many albums, TV and movie recordings as a sideman, and her career continues to evolve as she works in a variety of groups and settings. Of note is her involvement with Karl Berger’s Improvisers Orchestra, which won the Downbeat Critics Poll six times, and Patrick Brennan’s transparency kestra.
The Haruna Fukazawa Quintet performs regularly in New York City and the new album was released form Summit Records in 2019. The CD release show at The Blue Note New York was full house.
She was also featured on the cover of the Hot House Jazz Magazine.

Excellent group. Very nice flute playing because she is herself, not trying to copy. I like musicians here, they know how to blend, and not try to 'show off', or one-up each other or take over. ITs so nice to hear a modern jazz group who just plays very relaxed and cool, letting the music play itself. Drummer swings very nicely, his solo concept is most pleasant. They all know what they are doing. Way too many jazz groups today are trying to out-play each other, prove that they are better than Chick , Herbie et al. I love Haruna's approach to jazz flute, nice phrasing, nice be-bop playing, nice vibrato, not too much , not too little. Great sounding flute. This video made me very happy. Brava Haruna.
