How great to hear a musical score with real numbers rather than the tuneless stuff on offer in too many of today’s shows where you are lucky if you come out remembering one melody!

I saw the D'Oyle Carte production in London in 1971.....it was magical. In the time of Gilbert and Sullivan the current trumpet part was played by two cornets. The trumpet really entered orchestral playing after 1900. It has now replaced the cornets. I was impressed with the operatic quality of the voices...particularly the lead soprano......John Reed was a comic genius.

Yes, I saw her at the Harcourt Gay Bar, Nuneaton. She had a support act. It was this butch 'Fireman' who had a massive hose, and it was huge! They don't make this sort of humour anymore. I used to love being entertained by Dockyard Doris.

This was produced by “the production company” of which my dad (Bill Denis) was 1 third of the other producers,, Barry Killaby and Ian Mc Mannaus. Killaby also who it turned out to be the cold hearted human in the Mr Blobby costume basically killed the production factory after the show only survived 5 weeks at the lyric. My mum was company stage manager too!! I remember the auditions at the Churchill theatre in Bromley where it did a couple of months before moving to the lyric. I have great memories of dear Anthony Newly, Rhonda Burchmore, the dancers, the kids (who 2 have made it pretty big time) and a “get together at my house” where most of the girls (dancers and made the show with their incredible voices) got very tipsy but all just laughed and had a great time! Anthony Newley was the most lovely kind a little crazy (who isn’t) and I loved him dearly as he loved bringing the show back and was so so fond and truly cared about my parents and in ACTUAL FACT truly cared for the rest of the cast. I was around 14 at the time and still have the wine glass everyone got that was inscribed with details of the show. I ended up working at the lyric a couple of years after the show finished as a permanent part of the stage electric crew. My mum sadly passed in 91 and being so well known from years and years in the Westend her funeral in the church was literally standing room only. Anthony was there and so many of the rest of the cast. I took my daughter 14, to the Westend yesterday and showed her all the theatres I worked in and going round to the stage door of one of them there in front of me was a building ( I so so clearly remember running around in my nappy so about 2/3,) that had huge neon lights saying “ Raymond’s Review Bar” who even though is sadly another who is no longer with us but was my godfather!! How I have randomly found this post I really don’t know but it has put a smile on my face so thank you Samantha. I can still hear in my head Anthony singing the final words of Build a mountain, with him belting the words “with the good lords grace”🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️☺️ Im 50 in 3 weeks yet it all seems like it wasn’t that long ago I was being naughty on stage wit Denice and Martine! Anyway thank you for putting a big smile on my face!xx

Wonderful to see this production! I always regretted that I was unable to see it when it toured briefly in North America in 1987. I was fortunate enough to play Littlechap in Toronto in 2002 and have very fond memories of the production and of delving into the character. Anthony Newly IS Littlechap and it is great to be able to see him do it at last. My only beef here -- What happened to Ilse, the German maid with whom he had a fling in Act One? Why was she edited out of this video completely? I understand that she was in the production. Very odd! Otherwise, what a great thing to have had made publicly available. Thank you!

They don't make them like that anymore,...he was my best friend, could undoutably be a bit of a bugger,...but he taught me my craft.....we went through those song.....one by one...me in front of the fire place....he on the aged Chesterfield..........tore me up, brought me up.....I learnt more by that fire place....than most theatre schools can provide... comedy timing.....but over and above everything....a long and loving friendship which covered the last Twelve years of his life.....when he died on 24 th of August 1987...I new I had lost a very dear friend....but his story is all around me....I am surrounded by his books, and his pictures....but most important of them all....his angel....apparantly sawn out of the Gaiety Theatre in the Strand, before it was demolished, just after the 2WW...It hung over Dougie's bed, until he died...and it hangs over mine.......but it actually looks like Lilian Bayliss....directrisse of the Old Vic........wonderful tribute and momentous memories for a young lad of 20...plus...."They don't make them like that anymore...."....

I was so happy to fiind this. As a boy I was in three productions for Peter at the Palace Theatre - twice in "Oliver" (I was one of the workhouse boys/a boy in Fagin's gang) and once in "The King and I" (I was a Siamese prince) I would have been in primary school at the time, and have very happy memories of being onstage. Peter came across as quite a serious, commanding man but he was always very kind to me, perhaps because of the Sendell family - "Chook" Sendell was seamstress at the Palace, her daughter Diana stage manager and her other daughter Pam, my godmother, a dancer in Peter's productions. They were dear friends of my family. The productions I was in were fabulous, and of course were sellouts. Such happy days! Thank you for bringing back the memories of Peter!

This is amazing! And, strangely, I'm in the middle of writing a sort of parody on HMS Pinafore, where Buttercup is the lunch lady. She's singing about the typical unhealthy high school lunch offerings she sells, where potato chips and ketchup are the only vegetables! Meanwhile, partly as a result of all the junk food, the students are performing so badly on tests that the school eliminated the teachers and AI is teaching everyone-to the test, so test scores go up. But then the students become very depressed, and some are suicidal, as they've shown in studies with too much screen-time and not enough people-time. I'm aiming to get it performed by 2028, which is the 150th anniversary of the first performance of Pinafore. So, you can imagine that I was very happy to listen to this today!
