I have a question if you have a minute. On the main out put bearing some may have a one seal option or may be open on both sides. My 70 had one side closed off with a metal cover. whats the advantage to this opposed to all open.Wouldnt the output seal be starved of lubrication.

We have seen gearboxes with main bearings that have the metal shield on one side. Not sure where they originated (factory or aftermarket). All of the Andover Norton ( www.youtube.com/@andovernorton-thesource ) rebuild kits have bearings with no shield. I believe the shield does not act as a seal per se. Oil can permeate easily as I recall. Never gave it too much thought as we are normally doing a full rebuild and replace that bearing anyway.
