Hey Yall! Nice to see you, come on in!
My name is Ryan - although some of you might have known me as Colt Wheeler in the past. I grew up in the era of the internet, but what I always found there were plenty of blues, rock, and metal lessons and channels, but only a few modern country guitar lessons and not many country guitar channels. So I initially created this channel to help cut through the nonsense and test the advice out there and learn some country guitar along the way.
Then I got deep into amp modeling - you can blame Kris Gottlieb - the guitarist of CBDB - for recommending the Axe Fx to me back in college. I've been going down that rabbit hole every since.
Country music is my favorite style of music, but I also love 80s hair metal, the jam band scene, classic blues and rock, and so much more. So while I initially started out to help my former self learn country music, you wont find any shortage of other guitar stuff here.

@ guitar sound to Toby Keith I wanna talk about me and I’m not as good as I once was. And acoustic mixing recording sound of SunDaze(acoustic version) Florida Georgia line. But whatever you do is great.

Where do you get them rubber caps for the switches? I need them. I’ll try to hit the top switches and accidentally hit the bottoms, I’ll presume that’s why you have them as well lol

@ lmao i figured, thank you for the reply! Your content on the XL has been such a huge help! 🤘😎
Oh thanks friend. Glad it’s been helpful
why dont override the stomp vol so you can only use the powerstage volume?
Gretsch. Period. Country started with hollow bodies played by swing and jazz players. They used chord voicings that don’t sound the same on solid bodies.. and gave those old classic songs the haunting musical quality that made them so memorable. It’s only now you’re starting to see Gretsch really take place in Country music… but I really think you’re gonna see it come and dominate in the next couple of years.
I have been seeing a bunch of Gretsch guitars lately
Thanks for nothing.
It sounds like you're frustrated! Maybe you can tell me what could be improved?
Greetings from great Britain....I own a 98 fender strat usa deluxe...they came with noiseless pickups but no S1 switch...mines rose wood..a really nice dark fingerboard..its a great sounding guitar...the noiseless pickups are ace..maybe different from normal pickups but not in a bad way...apparently the deluxe ones use a better grade wood...the body on mine is a 2 piece but it's hard to spot...its pretty resonant...not as much as my Gibson les Paul junior but enough to know its a good one...the necks so very nice...I think some of those 90s USA fenders and Gibsons were of almost custom shop quality...that said I own a early fender baja telecaster that'd give the strat a run for its money and a 2007 Korean epiphone casino with factory fitted bigsby that apart from the pickups an poly finish ( not that that affects the sound imo) is as good as any Gibson I've owned/own....a good strat will last you a lifetime...so get a good one...im greedy I own 2...a 1984 ibanez roadstar ll and the deluxe...the maple neck on the ibanez is arguably better than the strat and as they are grossly underrated can still be bought quite cheap...a 40 year old "vintage " guitar as good as ANY USA fender...for 200-300 quid...
👌 Amazing amp, where living in the golden age of bedroom rockstars, so you certainly don't need more than a Kemper, P.S. Anything manufactured in Germany and Japan is a no brainer 🫡🎸
Completely agree with the German or Japanese manufacturers… they make the best stuff
warm up a bit and calm down after you came in from the cold winter street before you talk to the camera buddy. you are shaking your hands and head and your voice is shaking so much that I am worried about you. and your forehead and cheeks look like you got frostbite in the frosty canadian forest. drink some hot tea before you yell your blog is for youtube bro
Dammit Blink 182 😮💨
Just for the introduction you deserve 1 like+1 subscription!!!
Thank you friend! Glad you could surrender to the flow
The three guitar notes every five minutes made me stop watching his video and I liked the information and the way is was said. Killing me w those notes brother
Thanks for the feedback dude. I think I can mute those and will try to do that now
You would actually want to go into Global Settings and set the return jacks to Aux In (In/Outs - Return Type). This way you don’t need to use up a Return block in your signal chain and the sound from Spotify will never be processed through your effects chain.
This is a fever dream, I think. You have the invert polarity like right there in the global settings yet don't mention it. I like how the link to the Line6 one is unavailable. Really caps off the "I still have the same questions" vibe.
How does the FM9 with a power amp and real cab compare to a real amp I am curious because I am looking at a setup like this in the future because I doubt that i will buy another amp but I would like to use my existing vertical 2x12. Would I also mic it like a real amp or have the cab used only as a monitor for me and to fill up space in the room with the modeler going direct to mixer? would this work and would it even be a smart idea to do so because I don't see a lot of people doing this type of setup. I love my real amp but I would be open to a modeler like the Helix or maybe even Fractal the only "problem" with Fractal is that so little units are here in the EU and a lot of people around my place use stuff like Helix, Boss, still a lot of use real amps etc. so any tips or advice? Would the FM3 be too weak for a setup like this or is something like the FM9/Helix Floor better suited for my idea? I don't see myself using the Fender modeler, QC and whatever else exists I don't even know so I am probably only "set" on these two. Thank you in advance and great content.
So I run this to the board/FOH and then use a Seymour Duncan Powerstage 200 and run that into a 2x12 on stage. In the patches, I just make sure the cabinet block is at the very end and I'll have the output 3 not have a cab on it and run that to the PS and 2x12 and get the best of both worlds - amazing tone through the PA and a guitar amp feel behind me
@@ryansnydercg Hey thank you for the reply, english is not my first language so could you explain the routing a bit better I didn't quite get that? What I think I got correctly is that you go straight to PA but somehow you also get your sound with the power amp through cab (I only don't get can you do that throught the whole Fractal unit or a Helix or do you need like a switcher/routing device to split the two signals one going direct and the other one to the cab?) Also does your cab have some special speakers if so at how many Watts and Ohms are the speakers rated at? You also don't mic the cab up just use it to fill in space and use it as a "monitor"? Probably the most important question of them all HOW WELL does this setup sound compared to a real tube amp like full transparent and no bias answer? Sorry for so many questions but I have been searching for someone with a setup like this for a long long time so I wanna know everything before I make my buy. Thank you again 🙏.
@ all good questions. Do you have twitter or instagram or some other social media platform where I can send a few photos and diagram directly?
@@ryansnydercg I will add you and message you on insta I see that you have a link on your channel so I guess thats your account.
I just bought a Hotone EXP+Switch pedal and the thing goes from down to up and then down again. Is there a way to calibrate the EXP pedal?
NAMM is rapidly approaching in late Jan 2025 - perhaps wait and see what Line 6 announces then.
We shall see what they announce - if anything
@@ryansnydercg I do know with tech products (esp. Apple), that it's generally a good idea to hold off buying anything within a month or so of pending new product announcements - very often the older stuff gets discounted.
It's become blase' kid. You need something unique or a new job
Moe.!!!!! Rebubula

Well done - very good point & way to claim your direction.
Thank you! I appreciate this a lot.
Dude your channel is so amazing for the XL! Thanks for all of your knowledge! It’s to bad They don’t have an app for this, to just use on our phones instead of just desktop.
Yea buddy. And I agree a phone app would be ideal. But because it uses the same technology as the helix I wonder if they decided not to do it way back then. Maybe the next iteration of the Line6 modeler will have an app. Or if they could do one now. That would be super helpful
This is absolutely awesome!! I’m not there yet, but truly helpful to know, I’ll definitely be back to this video eventually
Glad it could help!
Hey thanks for this! I’m sure trying to go this slow was a little annoying, but i definitely appreciate it!! Happy New Year
It was something I wish I had when I started diving into the unit so no trouble at all. Glad it helps
Great video, really informative. How well does it work with your Blues Jr.? My experience is that it doesn‘t like every pedal, particular overdrives and distortions.
I enjoyed it really well. The band I was in while using it was mainly classic to 2000s rock so not much distortion but the over drive i did use sounded great. Probably the heaviest we did was death cab for cutie so nothing close to heavy metal tones but it worked well for what I was using it for
@ Thanks for the reply Ryan! I pulled the trigger on it and work my way through it. So far I‘m really happy with it
The Telecaster will always be the quintessential guitar for classic Country chicken pickin'...that bridge pickup tone is THE sound for sure. But a Strat does a great job too with it's bright bridge pickup tone which has plenty of twang. And the Strat #2 position of bridge/middle pickup combined is cool for certain Country things too. I think it has more to do with the player's technique in how well they chicken pick moreso than the actual guitar. I'm sure if Brad Paisley was handed a Gibson Explorer with EMG humbuckers plugged into his rig he'd probably still pull off a somewhat decent chicken pickin' sound despite not having his classic Tele...it has more to do with how the fingers are working the strings.
Country guitar is so percussive and to your point, very reliant on the players technique
Ok appreciate it but it's a small screen and you blazed through it because you've done it often. I was just setting up my first one. Doing a lot of scrolling back to slow you down.
Yea I got that comment a few times on this video. Sorry about that. But I did create a more basic video on snapshots here - hope this is more helpful : Helix HX Stomp XL Snapshot Tutorial: Complete Beginners Guide th-cam.com/video/Z0C7x8BnL8o/w-d-xo.html
@ thanks Ryan I appreciate your follow up on my comment. Plus my oldest son is named Ryan! I'm a pro with hundreds of (weekend) gigs under my belt. The Stomp is a great tool.
Super helpfull thanks bro
Yea buddy! Glad it helped
I bought a Fender Vintera II NoCaster for the fat U neck and 7.25” fingerboard, because I don’t want a Tele that feels like my Strat. The Tele feel makes me play it like a Tele, not like a Strat. That feel makes all the difference.
Is it possible to do the name/color customization from within the Stomp itself (without a computer)?
Yes but it’s very tedious
@@ryansnydercgdo you have a video on that? I don’t have a computer or laptop 🫠
Hey there. Lukes sound guy here. Well, his live sound guy. No big secrets on the guys tones. We want to modelers a few years ago because we did an arena tour in the round. Couldn’t have screaming amps under the stage with the techs and monitor engineer. One axe fx SR for Tyler. Kurt, Dustin and JD are all on Helix. Some of them have a setlist arrangement for their tones. Dustin and JD are way more basic.
Dude this is awesome. Is this something you could share more of?
Those bends are glorious!
Yes Jeff Beck is a beast at the bends
People who disagree changing the block and saddles makes a difference have never done it, or they’re hearing impaired. It’s something you have to do, you’re not going to hear the difference on TH-cam. The stock block has high lead content, which kills tone and sustain. The saddles are cast zinc, and give you icepick highs and bad frequency response. The pickups, once you get the hardware right, actually sound decent. I have a set of hot rodded Seymour Duncan humbuckers (JB/Jazz) that I don’t feel the need to install.
The neck . . . found that on a 1989 Korean Squier . . . so replaced the entire electronics upgrading to Vintage Deluxe Noiseless, which were in the early American Deluxe. To add some 'spank,' Fender sells the VDN pickups with a 500K pot for Vol, and 1M pots for the two tone controls. Some people physically measure ohms on their pots and sort them, so they can fine tune the treble output. Instead of 250's, they find 300's that work better in real world application. Now, if you really want classic spank, upgrade to a pickguard loaded with Fender 57-62's.
Thank you, now play 'Constipated Duck', please!
That is such a great song
He's a legend As well and 😺

Warmoth won a court case which allows them to make Fender spec parts. It goes way back & don’t remember the details but I do know that it wasn’t a “Fender seal of approval”
