I remember how this scene blew my mind when I first watched it. Even now a year later I still love the dramatics and I adore Queen Charlotte kissing her forehead honestly that’s my fave part, just elegant 🥰

She's so beautiful. Her sister, Francesca, is also very beautiful. Stunning even! They also look like real-life sisters because of similar features, particularly that mark above their upper lip. Great casting

The reason everybody is gasping when the Featheringtons girls enter is because is very low class to have all your daughters out at once. It's another hint to the viewer that they're having financial troubles. They're trying to save money. It's why Portia wouldn't let Penelope defer for a year and present at the same time as Eloise.
It cannot be low class to present all your daughters at once because the lower classes do not present their daughters at all!

@@kenna163 Low class means from or relating to the lower classes, you might want to Google rank and class in Georgian England (class is NOT necessarily wealth as they mean different things but the upper rank were? On average wealthier, and when wealth came from land and land was handed out by the king they were on and the same but Industrialization was breaking this up by this time, some nobles had lost fortunes due to poor luck and choices and some tradesmen had amassed significant wealth). LADY Featherington is NOBILITY, one step down from Royalty! Now her husband is a Baron, the lowest rank of nobility, but that does mean she outranks EVERYONE in Pride and Prejudice except for Lady Catherine de Burgh, the daughter of an Earl. Note the the main rank in Austen’s novels, Austen’s own rank, the gentry, were NOT presented at court when they came “out.” Now bringing someone “out” cost money as the associated clothes and entertaining costs were large, sometime money could be saved by sharing this amoung all the daughters, but you need to buy court dresses and ball gowns for all of them at once, a very very large expense instead of alternating them and passing at least the fabric (a popular choice amoung all classes for most of history as fabric was the most expensive part of clothing) so for many it was less expensive to have one or two out at time. Remember the source for Lady Featherington making a poor choice her is LADY WHISLEDON! Her daughter Penelope, who does not want to be out yet and wanted to come out with Eloise possibly only due to their friendship. Honestly, the issue seems actually to be that her daughters are morons who cannot work out how to walk through a door and not look at the ceiling!

I think that's because it's meant to be glaringly self-evident. The whole point is that it was Objectifying.

Don´t be anachronic. At that time, the only carreer a noble young woman could have or dream to have was to get a wedding in the same social status or above. They couldn´t have a job, they would not inherit their father´s money. So, being "desirable" as a bride was very important. A young woman from lower classes would be a maid, a cook, governess. But for somebody like Daphne, there were no options, thus Eloyse´s talking about her brothers going to university while she had not this opportunity.
Colin was so behind that I had to rewatch to see him looking at Pen. He literally blended in the background. But he was looking at her.

Daphne has delicate and fine features, once called exquisite. It's interesting to me that her sort of fae beauty is now being called plain or dull, especially since so many still get plastic surgery to get this ethereal look artificially, and then end up getting called out for looking artificial and like dolls instead of people. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. One can see across millenniums of human history that cultural and societal traditions of beauty change. Rarely do we living now looking back on the past sculptures, paintings and so on see any portrayals as ughly. We rather judge our ancestors for their cruelty, and often then make fun of them for being so unenlightened even while we ourselves indulge with ferocity in thinking we know better, so many speaking before truly thinking.
When I first saw Daphne I felt she was very unimpressive in terms of looks, especially next to the duke. But the actress really brought something special, innocent and even sparkling to Daphne.

I must be one of the few that find Daphne dull... Pretty birdie with on-point attitude but lack of personality in season 1. Kate or Eloise have more interesting features (both looks and personality) to me. Also Eloise doesn't have to be as regal as Daphne, she doesn't even intend to be favorable. At least to me women like her or Kate were like a breath of fresh air at that court. Daphne, Edwina may be the diamonds, but it doesn't mean they are the best or most desirable characters.

The Queen would never pick Eloise or Kate. Daphne is the most desirable character followed by Francesca. Kate is nowhere even close. The fact that you took time out to come on this video and trash her and try to even mention anything from S2 is nasty work.

They picked the pergect actress for Daphne: She is the picture of a perfect Regency young lady. Doll like feature, fair clear skin, round face. A+ casting for a Regency belle of the ball

Daphne is very beautiful, and is a breath of fresh air, as she isn't anti-marriage or love and actually wants to be a wife and mother. Very wholesome.

I just realized, when did the rules change wherein debutantes can't be presented escorted by their own mothers (Regency), but sponsored instead by other women (usually senior-degree relatives; Victorian-Edwardian)??
from what I've read/seen it depends on the oganization. Sometimes Debs are presented by their mother, father, both, or another of 'higher standing'/a sponser. It seems to just depend on who is...mentoring the girl in question. In this case it was their mothers because of course their mothers were the ones most in control of their daughters lives (wikipedia suggests if a girl was married it could have been her MIL that presented her not her mother)

I only noticed just now how every debutante (idk what to call them lol) wears similar dresses. The Featheringtons in s1 and Eloise in s2 wore dresses that were designed to look the same--maybe so the Queen can spot the one and only unique "diamond" from the parade of similar-dressed debutantes.
There was a strict uniform for these 'Drawing rooms' aka being presented. All the women being presented were supposed to wear a white dress with a train, bare-shouldered, with feathers in their hair so they could be spotted in the crowd.
@@tiffanycarter5432 adding on to this, the show actually used the french debutante dresses, the english ones had panniers still, just tied right under the bust instead of at the waist as queen Charlotte refused to change the demands of how her court should dress. She kept the same demands of style from the georgian era until her son finally got to be king and not just regent.
