Work and play from metal fabrication to motorcycles, cars and tractors.
New gear set for the transfer box.
Short and sweet as we change our gear ratios in the transfer box, on our m57 swapped Land Rover Series 2b. We wanted to lower our RPM when cruising and give us a longer range in our gears.

M57 swap ZF6hp shifting issues.

Waffling on as we investigate the shifting issue that came on during our Santa Pod trip in our Series Land Rover 2b forward control. What we were experiencing seems a common problem across the internet so some people may find this video quite informative. Watch the previous video for additional information and the symptoms. Our first runs on the drag strip at Santa Pod in our Land Rover Series 2b forward control with BMW m57 swap. In fact our first visit ever. See how we got on, make sure to watch the video right to the end for an explanation of times, why we think we got those times and how we think we can improve. Our runs are mixed in with others so this video is certainly worth watching start to finish. Find a...

Would have watched if the annoying music was left out.
Air fed mask or not, do try to keep your head up and away from the weld fumes. If not for your lungs, it helps the longevity of your lens.
Been following this build and it's awesome. I like the steel constructed adapter between auto box and transfer box. Doing a conversion myself, M57, 6hp auto into a 130 motorhome. Are you willing to share the CAD drawing (dxf) for the adapter components? Would really help.
Any chance you can rotate the phone so the picture matches every screen in the world... Or is that what TH-cam does to it?
Is the engine modified and what have you done to the rest of the drivetrain? Still 4wd? I recently bought a 101 ambulance with the original 3.5 V8 and don't know whether or not to keep it.
Were all Dexters pocket rockets? At my first job the farmer had a couple of Fordson Majors and a Dexter. I drove it a couple of times on the road and it could overtake the next door farm's Case and David Brown heaps. I refer to them as heaps because i got to use them for the next six years when my YTS ended and i was head hunted by the gaffer.
That's very public spirited of you to push that car using your towing bar
Is that as scary as i think it is???
Possibly for the passenger 😅
Very curious about the vehicle weight and fuel economy since the swap.
Hi! After the swap she ways 2270kg with a tank of fuel and one passenger onboard (30kg less than before!). We have been getting around 30mpg on mixed roads (lots of hills around us!)
if that’s first fire that’s pretty crazy must have a big starter
Yep, first fire 👍 warms up pretty quickly as well 👍 those German's know a thing or two 😉🤣
@@motorsandmetal313 you’re right Germany hasn’t missed
Soon be christmas 🎄
It’s fairly obvious this man hasn’t a clue about maintaining a agriculture machine after watching this for the first few minutes
Funny that.... That was the first time moving it or starting it since we brought it and was the first tractor we had owned. We got the hydraulics working and then sold it on to fund other projects. Just interested in what you would have done differently?
Wow truck with bmw engine? Slick man
Thanks 👍 see how we built it in our other videos👍😉
how to install a rev counter too ?
madness! Brilliant - you guys rock!
Ha! Only limited by budget 🤣👌
What a brilliant channel. How you have under 500 subs is a mystery to me! 👌🏼
Thanks Jordan! Thanks for subbing aswell 👍 👍 I think it just comes down to luck to be honest! As you can see from our turbo... we don't have much of that! 😅🤣
Hi, what is that standard shift alone? I'm planning on doing m57 swap into r51 pathfinder and doing research on the topic. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm not 100% sure on your question.... but.... The shifter itself is BMW X5 e53 and the transmission is controlled by its internal electrics (linked the the engine ECU via CAN) just as it was in the original car 👍 Feel free to ask more 👍
@@motorsandmetal313 Lovely informative video. Thanks for sharing. how did you extend the shifter cable from the lever to the transmission, while maintaining its acuracy and functionality.👍
@@kaelomakati I ran the BMW shifter cable as far as it would go, mounted the end and coupled it straight to another cable (you can buy any length with threaded ends) thay then connected to the transmision in the standard fashion. Hope that makes some sense!?
I wouldnt be surprised if you find all your gearbox issues were due to the final drive ratio being incorrect, overreving the gearbox, the swarf might be from the rapid gearchanges its struggling to make
What data is the computer showing
Engine RPM, Turbine RPM, accelerator pedal angle, engine temperature and transmission temperature... Possibly one more but I can't remember 😅 mainly interested in the RPMs and temps 👍
Not saying that you wont, but chk the new bits thoroughly. Had my S3 gearbox rebuilt by a very knowkedgeable person and he was saying that new parts quality is rubbish. Had to source good used and nos stuff.
Yep, there is a lot of rubbish out there unfortunately!! These parts looked very good and fitted very well 👍 and today after 9 and a half hours of driving.... I can safely say the gear ratio was a good choice 👌👍
The big question is....... The swarf. Is that new swarf.. somthings breaking? Or old... somthings broken?
It's difficult to say for sure... The valve body with the swarf is from a gear ox we haven't used... So it could have existed from that... Or it could (probably) be something breaking down within the box we are running.. Without pulling it completely to bits etc.... It is however driving really well since this work... But obviously it's still old! Now knowing the current mechatronic is clean... If we pull it apart in the future and find it full of bits ... Then it's this box.... If it's clean.... All good 🤷👍
Dan!!!! 'You owe me a 10 second car'
Will you join us on a our yearly classic run next year??👍👍
Send us the details over, we will look into it 😁👍
The shop links on your channel are for the etsy shop, the fabrication info .... then a tee shirt etc one ........ but not the tee shirts you mentioned in the vid. The tee shirt link looks to be an ad for the tee shirt etc company. Am l looking in wrong place (looking on a phone if that makes any difference.) Cheers.
Woops! Thanks for pointing that out. Links have been updated on the page👍 Also link in the description for this video 👍 shout if it still doesn't work for you😉
Enjoying the Forward Control vids, btw is that a Fields of the Nephilim tour/live box you have?
It is! Well spotted 👍
got my attention for what it is but thought it strange you did it on those floatation tyres for off roading which i bet it would be great for but will keep eye on the beast
Hi David, agreed more road based tyres would be suited for the drag strip... However this is at the end of the day our daily/ work truck 😅 so it goes as we run it👍 it's also hard to find a 'road' tyre in an appropriate size. Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Brilliant! You must be well chuffed with how it went. Performed well and was very steady in a straight line. You both should have had a run! Did you have to install any special safety equipment for the day and do they do scrutineering of any sort? Gearbox - were you using a new/different/oil?
Hopefully next time we will have more time there and we can get Keri down the track in it aswell 👍👍 It was super smooth down the track, very easy. No extra safety equipment required for this event and because we are under 110mph ... Transmission - Same oil just over full... Seems this can over pressure the hydraulics and potentially damage the internals... Will see how it drives this week now everything has been checked 🤞👍
What’s with that so called music? It turned me off, so I turned it off!
Ever thought about using lanoguard? Use it on my S3 chassis. Good stuff. Like your workshop/small holding set up.
Funny, Keri and I were talking about lanoguard whilst doing this! We still have a lot to do chassis wise so maybe once a bit further along we may lanoguard it 👍👍 Thanks for the comments, next video of us at the drag strip will be up soon!!!
Lanolin gets my vote and afaik, lanoguard has the most lanolin in it. Easy and pleasant to use ....... use it on my S3 and g.f's old air cooled vw. Smells a bit sheepy for a while, takes a while to go waxy ..... doesnt dry and flake like waxoyl etc. MOD use lanolin for storage ..... very impressed with it. They do a grease as well which l have been using as antisieze (but not on brakes!) Liking the f.c - its a beast!
Pretty cool truck, doggo is important too, keep the pace , awesome channel
Thank you 👍 see how we got on at the drag strip in the next video... Live in a couple of days 👍👍
Xcess4x4 have a rebuilt env axle available if you need one
Thanks for the heads up 👍
Send it!
epic stuff!
Thanks 👍
awesome job there...i love it
Thanks 👍 be sure to follow along with the other related videos 😉👍
I've never understood these, but then I use my tractor for tractor things...
🤣 I suppose a bit of a buss man's holiday for you!? I believe this one was in fact a fund raiser for the air ambulance...😉👍
epic! - love it!
Funny Tom said it was probably a overspeed problem. A boost leak so the compressor working against nothing
Suspect the leaking exhaust manifold may have cooked the solenoid.... Or it just failed.. Either way we should notice if this one fails 👍
Best of luck with the turbo
Cheers 👍 🤞🤞🤞🤞
2JZ swap...
I always install a catch can on any new diesel vehicle I buy. Greetings from Australia
The accent is everything ❤
STACK!!!!!
I do, however, distinctly remember asking for STACKS. its a straight 6 STACKS is what it needs
Interesting video, luck forward to part two
Awesome video! You should be very proud of your work! Keep going!
Cheers, hopefully show it driving early next week.... Fingers crossed!
Thought it had been quiet recently, also explains why you were selling the LT77... Was hoping my FC was going to be the first M57 one, got an engine and manual box but now you're leaving me thinking on an auto.
Killed the lt77 back in February, in a snow storm going up a hill late at night 🤣 Felt I have done plenty with tdi's previously and the m57 is an attractive choice! Auto because there is no clutch to kill 👍🤣 Hopefully have it driving at the weekend... Auto could bite us yet... Only time will tell 👍
@Motors and Metal uk I swopped one of the later engines and a 6HP into my L322 Rangie after it shat its second 5L40E at the end of last year. Transformed the car entirely for the better, and should be great in an FC. My IIB is going manual as the chassis is galvanised and the auto combo is too long to fit between crossmembers without cutting. The IIA might get an auto as I don't mind cutting the chassis on it.
@@Daslandroverman sounds great 👍 the chassis on this has been hacked around previous to me... So I don't mind chopping it some more 🤣 It will get a new chassis at some point!
Any chance I could buy the manifold from your old engine 😂
🤣 sadly it sold with the engine! If you want one .... Get in touch.... Send one over and we can chop it up 😉

Typical Land Rover d canal boat engine powered skip
What, I can't hear you, dear the bike is too loud, well looks like it charging now, I think you fixed it!
Injection pump definitely needs a new diaphram in it its at the back of the Injection pump undo the 4 slotted screws its in there. They perish and it makes the engine hunt as the rack in the pump is pulled by vacume on the inlet manifold which your throttle lever is connected to change that for a new one and she will be sound then.
Nice one 👍 I will get one ordered 👌 hydraulics are now fully functional, should be doing an update video on this soon 👍
@@motorsandmetal313 i had a Dexta about 7 years ago i completely rebuilt the engine as a conrod went through the side of the engine block i bought the tractor like it from a local cricket club and so bought a good second hand engine block and put all new internals in it crank pistons rings liners the lot. Then completely shot blasted and painted the whole tractor she looked lovely when she was done see my video on TH-cam. Also when you take the cover off the rear of the pump it wont just come off theres a spring in there from what i remember and i think theres a pin that holds the diaphram on the end of the pump rack its a little bit tricky just take your time and the cover will come off there might even be a video on bow to do it on TH-cam its not hard just tricky getting the cover off to get to the diaphram.
