This is a stunning piece of videography. I've just found out that my great, great, great grandfather is buried here, so it's lovely to see where his resting place is.

Hi Des, Thank you for the nice, calm video. I share your last name and my first name is John. My Grandfather was the John O'Grady who had the shop on, I believe, Bridge Street. We lived in Westport from 1961 to October of 1963. We lived up at the top of Altamont Street next to Mrs Reidy's. I have so many nice memories of those two years. When you cross the street and go under that bridge there used to be a big open field there. Far away from the road there was a very small rise with a tree sticking up out of it. I made it my goal to reach that hill and I never succeeded. There were these low-growing bushes that were very thorny but if you got down on your belly you could crawl under them and so I did but I always dead-ended somewhere. One day I came upon a spot where they had cut out a square of the sod for the turf. It didn't look too deep so I stepped into it and my Wellington-booted foot instantly disappeared into the muck. If I pulled one shoe out the other would sink in and vice-versa so the only way I was able to escape was to leave one of the boots there. Needless to say my mother was not pleased. There was also that steep hill behind the house on the other side of the railroad tracks. I tried climbing that hill one day and I ran out of gas about 3/4 of the way up and I was afraid to climb down. I yelled for help but no one heard me and eventually I got back down. Little boy adventures. One of those years we had that holiday where they have all of those bonfires and they had a bonfire right across the street from my house. I saw that pile of wood and I immediately disappeared into it, crawling around, exploring, that is until they started pouring gasoline on it. I got out fast. I attended Lower Infants at the school just down the road and I'm pretty sure the schoolhouse I attended is the one that has that psychedelic paint-job now. On my first day in school there was this kid that arrived to class with a briefcase(!) of all things. The nun told him to hand it over, he said no. They ended up getting into a physical battle for possession of the suitcase and naturally the nun won. She told him to go back to his seat and he did but he wouldn't sit down so the nun said that little boys who stand up too long get this terrible disease etc. and the kid got scared and sat down. We had restroom facilities that didn't use water to flush anything away; it all just fell into the dirt underneath you. So one day I got curious and I stuck my head in there and I looked across (it was a big, long open area that extended to include the girls restroom next door) and I could see the shit falling out of the other kids asses. I found this very amusing. I loved the Mall and the Carrowbeg River. We actually called the river the Mall. It was shallow enough that we could make rock bridges over it and it's where I learned how to skip rocks. The first dreams I ever had involved that river and it became a part of my dream landscape. Whenever I moved to a new city the river dreams would stop until I got accustomed to the new place. I don't know why but I always favored the Clock Tower over the Octagon. I used to love sitting and people-watching in that spot between Peter Street and that other road that goes out to the Quay. So many wonderful memories. Thank you Des. Right now I'd rather remember yesterday and you helped me do that! Take care and be well Des, John.
