What happens to the duct tape on the mirror if you use a heat gun? Thanks.
I would never use harsh chemicals like cold In a glass your going to drink out of. That's just like drinking poison. I'd rather have cloudy glasses. 8f they get to bad ,go buy new ones.
I have a table like this but it is sandwiched it has a crack through it any suggestions?
Best part of the video is from the 7:03 mark until the end !!!!!
Is this how camera lens glass were restored? The only downside is the coating on the glass will lose it protective layer during processing of polishing and using the white vinegar. Thanks for your advice though to not use. I’m started to see my lens is developing a haze. I need help who can I contact for professional repair to get my lens serviced? or I can contact camera company that were in my possession.
Hi Kyleandrei, sorry, I am not qualified to give you advice on coated (or uncoated) camera lenses.
Thank you for this video. It helped me in my decision for protective table top
Best video on this topic
I scrubbed them with vinegar. They cleared a bit. Not evenly, some glasses were clearer than the others.
I have found that Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Original scrubber works very well.
Hi Virile, thanks for viewing my video, and thanks for your tip. Magic Erasers CAN be effective because they are not just foam pads - instead, they are made of melamine foam - a special melamine-formaldehyde condensate. This open-cell foam is microporous and its polymeric substance is very hard, so that when used for cleaning it works like extremely fine sandpaper, getting into tiny grooves and pits in the object being cleaned. If I could easily re-record my video, I would recommend that people try a Magic Eraser on permanently etched crystal because the fine sanding MIGHT be effective, especially on minor cloudiness. If you want the Magic Erasers to be even more effective, you could try tying them around a wooden dowel and using them in a drill. Finally: deeply etched (very cloudy) crystal will probably still need cerium oxide as explained in my video.
i am a little concerned with the CRL water spot remover, If I have to wear gloves while using it on my glasses how safe is on the glass to use after using the product, After they are thoroughly washed,
Hi Nanny, thank you very much for watching my video. Please do not worry about any after effects of the CRL water spot remover. Glass is completely impervious. That means that the CRL chemicals cannnot soak into glass. So as long as you clean the glass thoroughly after using the CRL there will be no danger whatsoever.
@@shelfsupportsolutions5808 I see, Thank you for responding
Can I use Muriatic Acid? It's half the price of CRL
Hi Leslie, thank you for viewing my video. Sorry, but although muriatic acid is cheaper than CRL water spot remover it simply does not work on most water stains. It is also much more dangerous than CRL.
I got a gift from my boyfriend but I broke it not the whole mugs its only onder of the mug was broke
Thanks so much for making this! I have a little chick one that I just love from my late grandmother and it’s so fascinating to see how they started out of such a simple idea of gluing stuff together lol
Hi HisHer, thanks for your kind remarks. Make sure no small children get hold of these glittering objects. Kids cannot resist them and they are easily broken!
tried with dish soap -> failed tried with car winshield water spots remover -> failed tried with rubbing alcohol -> failed tried with white vinegar -> failed tried with metal polishing paste -> failed tried with metal polishing paste + cerium oxide -> failed tried with HCL + H2SO4 solurion -> some hazy cloud spots vanished when I applied the solution with a toothbrush. I'll try submerging the glass next time. Thank you for sharing this usefull video. PS: Anyone who read this and want to try the acid cleaning please ware long arm rubber gloves and protective eye glasses. Better yet ware cheap pvc or polymer rain coat and a face shield. If those acids got in contact with your skin it will eat your skin and flesh under your skin. If it got in contact with your eyes then you'll damage your eyes. Put a large amount of sodium bicarbonate near you to neutralize those acids in case of it spills or flashes. And please do it in a well ventilated area.
splashes *not flashes*
Hi Farid, thanks for your report and your cautionary remarks about acid. My recommended CRL water spot remover should also be used with care (protective gloves and good ventilation) but, as you see from the Safety Data Sheet the HF content is less than 2%: webcache.crlaurence.com.mx/DataSheets/MSDS/PDF_MX/C2020.pdf
Do you guys do this repair? Or know anyone who does anymore?
Hi, sorry we retired and do not know anyone with the skill, knowledge, time, and inclination to undertake jobs like these.
This video was actually very entertaining as well as informative. Ignore the grumpuses! I often repurpose my damaged / repaired mugs as pencil cups, make-up or paint brush cups, etc. Another attractive reuse is as a small potted or artificial plant holder. My kitchen window sill is an excellent example. Thanks for the video, advice, and chuckles.
Hi Louis, thanks for your kind remarks. Very many tourists stop at gift shops all over the world and purchase fridge magnets, T-shirts, and other items such as mugs - as souvenirs of their memorable vacations. So mugs become valuable, sentimental souvenirs. But you are correct to conclude that busted mugs cannot be perfectly restored for use as dispensers of hot coffee. If you had had 40 years experience of dealing with narcissistic customers with busted china you would join me in leaping from a tall building. ME: “We can repair the chip but the piece will become a display item - you cannot use it for coffee, soup, scrambled eggs, pierogi, spaghetti, or anything.” Customer: “Oh, this is so disappointing - I really need 12 place settings - what about if I just used it for Thanksgiving?” ME: “You can use it for Thanksgiving, Kwanza, Passover, Christmas, Easter or whenever (the hell) you wish, but the repair (filling and paint) will eventually wash off because we cannot fire the restored paint.” Customer: “Well could I use it for a dessert or salad without liquid?” ME: “You can fill this china with strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers, apricots, sweet potatoes, peaches, plums, melons, eggplant, lemons, lettuce, green beans, kale, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, spinach, corn, Swiss chard, celery, beets, onions, cauliflower, cherries, bananas, mushrooms, parsnips, turnips - or whatever you like BUT the repair will eventually fail.” Customer (in a valedictory insult): “Well can you put me in touch with someone who CAN fix my china?!!!!! ME: "I have a Ph.D. and 40 years experience NO ONE CAN FIX YOUR MUG"
I came to this video to find ideas about how to fix three broken cups that are shattered into multiple pieces. The video doesn't tell how to fix that so I was sad about maybe having to toss them. Then I saw your comment. If gluing them back together the regular way doesn't work then I love the idea of keeping them as desk organizers, planters, or paint brush water cups. If I turned them into planters I'd have to remove the handles so they will look more like pots, and so they will fit on my narrow window sill. Thanks for the ideas!
Hand wash and dry with a soft cotton towel ... prevent the problem
Hi Deborah, thank you very much for this important reminder. Fine Glassware and crystal should always be hand washed and never placed in a dishwasher. You are quite correct.
@shelfsupportsolutions5808 of course, if it's everyday glassware that's cloudy, it can be boiled for a few minutes in a pot of water with a half cup of white vinegar. 🙂
HF hydrofluoric acid is something most consumers would do well to avoid using. My dear old mum needed treatment for a mild HF burn on her finger from using a grocery store purchased rust stain remover which was simply diluted HF and some surfactant or other. This was decades ago and who knows if the stuff is still available abd because even though she was wearing decent rubber gloves when using the product to clean whatever rust stain she was working on, she removed her gloves for some reason and more than likely got a single drop or perhaps three on her finger when replacing the bottle cap of the product. I see products are still being sold "over the counter" that have HF- wow...
Hi Melony, thanks very much for viewing my video AND for your very sensible advice on hydrofluoric acid (HF). I am attaching the Safety Data Sheet for the CRL water spot remover and you will see that the HF content is less than 2%: webcache.crlaurence.com.mx/DataSheets/MSDS/PDF_MX/C2020.pdf So, whilst you are quite correct to be cautious about dangerous chemicals, the risk of damage from HF is rather low unless you drink it. Sorry, I may have been misleading in my commentary. However, we highly recommend using gloves and protective goggles and also operating in a well-ventilated environment. Many thanks again for your cautionary note!!
Hi! just watched the video. I have a mug I brought all the way from London to California then discovered it has a long hairline fracture. If I use DAP as suggested, does that mean I cannot drink from the mug? It's a Starbucks mug, I think it's china
Hi Theresa, I don't suppose you are the former Conservative Prime Minister (just retired from the House of Commons)? If so - congratulations on having the sense to emigrate to California!. On the mug - it's OK to use occasionally if you insist BUT much better to keep it as a displayed souvenir. With heat and washing the crack will widen and extend. Thanks for watching my video!
If the brass wire is covered by clay, is it still microwave safe?
Hi Gary, that's a great question! The real answer is that you should never place a repaired coffee mug in the microwave (metal handle/armature or not). This is because the glue and any epoxy filler or paint is NOT FIRED ON. So the repaired mug becomes a display piece - not to be used under any circumstances (unless you want to fix it again). PS Thanks for viewing the vid!
I just used vinegar and it worked like a charm
Hi Mr. Faded, thanks very much for viewing my video. As I mentioned in the commentary, vinegar is sometimes effective because when calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) comes in contact with vinegar (which contains acetic acid, CH₃COOH), a chemical reaction occurs. Here’s the chemical equation for this reaction: CaCO₃ (s) + 2CH₃COOH (l) → Ca(CH₃COO)₂ (s) + H₂O (l) + CO₂ (g) In this reaction: Calcium carbonate reacts with acetic acid to form calcium acetate (Ca(CH₃COO)₂), water, and carbon dioxide gas (CO₂). In practice, however, most users report that household vinegar is too weak to remove serious deposits. If you like the idea of using vinegar we recommend the full, industrial-strength variety - amzn.to/4e8hbcX
@@artistryinglass943 Yeah, I have been trying with household vinegar and it's really difficult (trying to clean up old aquarium glasses) the Hydrofluoric acid can be lethal in high concentrations. Is the CRL water spot remover safe to use? Supposing that some splashing could occur? Thanks for the video.
@@eduardomurphyperez717 For best results turn the aquarium on its side so that the water-marked surface is horizontal. Then pour a little CRL on the glass and let it "pond" up for a while. You will see the scale start to release. Then flip the aquarium to do the other side. CRL does not work by scrubbing - just by dissolving so you just need to allow the CRL liquid to sit on the stained surface long enough to work. Rinse with plenty of clear water and try again if some stains remain., Be sure to use gloves and goggles. John
@@johnwakefield5633 Thanks for the tips, great info on the video, btw.
Would this work on a glass stovetop that has hard water stains on a burner that looks cloudy?
Hi Peter, Good question - this is a new one for me and the the heat may have "baked-in" or otherwise modified the stains making them harder to remove than typical hard water deposits. If the stains are really CaCO₃, then the CRL should work - but experiment on a small area in case of unexpected results! Otherwise, carefully grinding and polishing with cerium should also work. Good Luck!
Anyone know if this would work for bird poop that etched a house window? It's smooth to the touch and basic cleaning with different soaps does nothing.
Hi Barry, bird poop is acid (PH around 3.00)and can permanently etch glass. CRL spot remover will probably not help. The only solution is abrasive polishing using foam or felt pads and cerium oxide. amzn.to/3JRwvN7 . Test on a small area first.
I have 2 glasses completed shaded in cloud. I would like to try what you have recommended in this video but could I send you a picture of my 2 glasses and ask whether your methods would work on them?
Yes you can but I cannot guaranty to diagnose for sure from a photo. Send to support@artistry-in-glass.com and I will take a look.
Soak on lemon juice with hot water disk liquid and soda Or use soap pads
Where in the Portland Oregon area can I look into this? Can’t seem to find anything on it.🥺
Hi Whitebird, sorry you can't find a supplier in Portland. Any competent glass company is capable of doing backsplashes - the installation is almost identical to installing wall mirrors. Your best bet is to call the larger residential glass companies in your area - like canyon.glass/ www.bridgecityglaziers.com/ mthoodglass.com/residential/ Avoid window repair/window board-up or auto glass companies. To clarify, send them a link to my video, Good luck, John
Can the CRL BE USED ON PLASTIC BOTTLES
Hi Bruce, I have never tried but I suspect that it would dissolve the hard water deposits - just not sure if it would etch or damage the plastic. Try at your own risk!
@johnwakefield5633 thanks for the "HEADS UP"
This video is EXACTLY what I was looking for. Thank you. ❤
Hi Michael, thanks for your generous testimonial! We have always tried to persuade our Arizona customers NOT to request a saguaro and a coyote howling at the moon when there are much better design options available. (If you could subscribe I would appreciate it!) John
After a standard porcelain mug handle is fixed, can it be used in a microwave oven to reheat coffee? what type of epoxy or glue do you recommend? Will super glue or epoxy withstand the microwave or dishwasher?
Hi Barry, thanks for watching my video. Some less-than-honest repairers may claim that repaired mugs can be used - either in the microwave or otherwise BUT no glue will withstand repeated or even occasional use for your favorite cup of coffee or tea. We tell all our customers that a mug with a fixed handle becomes a DISPLAY piece only.
@@johnwakefield5633 Thank you so much for your reply. That's what I was concerned about. You've saved me a lot of time and another mess on the floor.
I used toothpaste and that worked perfectly on my coffee mug glassware.
Hi Lina, thanks for the feedback. What brand of toothpaste did you use? And did you use a soft-bristle brush?
@@johnwakefield5633 colgate total whitening. I just used my fingers. Rubbed it on the problem area. Until it dried and then rinse while using my fingers. I decided to try toothpaste because u mentioned it was not very abrasive and i didnt want to scratch my coffee mug so i decided to try it. :) worked great!👍🏼
If you have a large collection of glassware, can CRL be used over and over without pouring it back into main bottle. (pouring it from glass to glass)
Hi Bruce, thanks for watching my video. Yes, reusing will work for a while but you may start to have an issue with "dregs" - white calcium carbonate residue from the bottom of the glasses. I think the optimum recycling method is to use 2 bottles - one for the used and one for the fresh. Then you can evaluate the effectiveness of the used liquid as it gradually loses strength,
I have been doing a few workouts a day and I really like this one! I'm gonna stick this one on my schedule!
I broke it in a hotel
Thank you very much!
I was hoping for a remedy for filmy glassware - it's not etched, or stained by hard water, just a film from sitting in a cupboard. I guess hand wash is still best. I've never put them in a dishwasher but still, the handwashing only *seems* to hold for a while.
That's the exact problem I'm having with my glassware. I wish to get some help here..
@@jscraftynook4277 Since my original comment, I discovered something > white vinegar! fill a sink with hot soapy water and add, say, a half cup of white vin. Its AMAZING! Cuts all the filmy stuff, and any oils of marks. Eureka!!!
Is it glass??
Does this work on glass lenses ?
Hi Joao, thanks for watching my video and for the excellent question. The short answer is that it is not a good idea to use strong solvents or to grind and polish delicate lenses unless you are certain of what you are doing. Many eyeglass lenses are made of polycarbonate (plastic) and many lenses of all types have special surface coatings that will be removed by abrasive polishing. The only exception might be a large, antique glass lens, used for decorative purposes that might have water stains.
@@artistryinglass943 ok thanks, you are very helpfull
When you're done, where do you dispose of the crl?
Hi LifeHack, thanks for watching our video. You ask a good question. I have a great deal of concern for pollution, climate change, and the future of our planet but the amount of CRL we use on a typical glass (maybe 6 oz) is not dangerous. We decant the used solvent back into a spare bottle for reuse (it keeps its strength through multiple uses). When it has lost its power we carefully dispose of the residue by diluting in tap water and allowing it to drain away. John
What’s a good type of dye for a black mug? This is for the chip method. My favorite mug got a pretty bad chip and it breaks my heart to see it like that.
Hi Grecia, thanks for watching my video. If it's worth $15.00 to you, try this black epoxy from Bigbong - amzn.to/47cOIOs . Be sure to clean the broken surface before applying the glue. After it sets up, sand and polish. Or, you can use any 2-part epoxy you have available and tint it black with lead scraped off from a lead pencil (not so good). I had beautiful results just using a paste of Bon Ami and water on a soft sponge. Worked the sponge in circles and my barware is now sparkling clean with no cloudiness. No need to buy caustic chemicals or use a drill.
Thanks for the feedback Janny! Did you have hard water deposits (calcium carbonate) or do you think the cloudiness was caused by etching? (normally from dishwasher chemicals).
