    For me so far as the rankest of rank beginners, it's been "put the guitar in your lap and play it like that." Immediate easy fretting with zero pain or tension; you even get to use the natural weight of your arm to press the strings. I bought a really pretty strap and would like to use it at some point, but for now, playing it in my lap is just so comfortable.

    Playing or writing music without knowing music theory is a little bit like speaking or writing without knowing any grammar. Like yeah, maybe you can come up with something that ends up making sense but if you know your grammar (even just some basic rules), it is a lot easier to put that vocabulary to good use. A musician that can only play a lick or riff they learned without understanding it is a little bit like a parrot that can refer to a bottle as "That's a bottle" but that's about the extent of its "knowledge".

    These are great exercises and I appreciate you laying them out. But, I wish that you could go into more detail about how to practice these. for example, how long should spend on each exercise a day? should you practice one at time until you reach 150? should you practice each one perfectly at a given tempo before increasing tempo? or should you push yourself at one particular tempo until you reach efficiency? these may seem like stupid questions to an experienced player who has had success in practicing, but to an unexperienced player, a detailed daily practice routine is needed in the beginning until you get some success. again, thank you for taking the time in laying these out!

    • @Jamsville
      @Jamsville หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for your comment! This is an interesting comment, because about 99% of the time, people say they want me to go into less detail (you know.... most people want to watch a 30 second TikTok that solves all their problems..) The only way for me to really answer your questions is of course, to evaluate where you are specifically as a player (IE - an actual 1-1 lesson) That said, I will attempt to do so. - for example, how long should spend on each exercise a day? A: As long as your schedule allows for and allows you to hit a particular tempo goal for the day. You may only practice one exercise the entire day. I used to easily spend an hour practicing only the first exercise. You'll find you never feel absolutely 100% perfect lol, and once you do, you can start going faster. - should you practice one at time until you reach 150? A: Probably not. Set a more reasonable goal like 16th notes at 100 or 120, especially for the ones with crossing strings. You can see that if I'm not properly warmed up, I still make mistakes for example on the full 6 string scale pattern. For the simpler single string ones, you can likely push the tempo up to 150 in much less time. Once you do this, you will start to notice the other exercises (and literally everything else you play) feeling a lot easier. - should you practice each one perfectly at a given tempo before increasing tempo? YES. I would recommend 5 repetitions perfectly in a row before moving up, and move up in increments no greater than 10 BPM. Some people like to hold themselves to the standard of 8 or 10 perfect repetitions. More is better of course, but 5 in a row is very solid. - or should you push yourself at one particular tempo until you reach efficiency? Sometimes it can be helpful to sit at one moderately challenging tempo for a while. In my experience, I can even play something 8-10 times in a row perfectly (to an outsider) however, I feel a little too much excess tension, or I simply don't enjoy how I feel with it. To me, I should not only be able to play without mistakes, but it should also *feel easy* You're asking the right questions, and I can tell you will be very successful if you continue with your mindset. Cheers!

    This is just me talking and you have your good points😊 but I would say if somebody is stuck in the pentatonic box ... The best way out of the Pentatonix box ... Would be one to play that shape in other places in other words other modes or other boxes And then to use a totally different scale sometimes ... Or to change One note in the way that you're playing it ... There's a lot of meaningful guitar solos that have been written where they play the pentatonic scale but they changed just one note and Like stairway to heaven is an example but jazz or my solos (not jazz all the time) I do a lot of that Set the pattern means something but if you're stuck in the pentatonic box make sure you know all the boxes but make sure that you're playing them where they mean different things where it's not just the pentatonic scale The best way to get out of the pentatonic scale box is not to play the scale to play it differently And then of course ... Using arpeggios and using other scales like the harmonic scale is always good And of course then there are the weird scales that I don't even know the names of that nobody ever talks about but they exist I mean if you're stuck in the box just do other things. I don't think it's how you look at the notes I think it's the fact that you understand other things to do.

  • @ScoobyDoo-kt9pv
    @ScoobyDoo-kt9pv หลายเดือนก่อน

    Hey buddy first off you're fine course and all ... But I really see the guitar players that learn to play by notes rather than shapes .. like Brandon Dion and honestly he I'm avoiding being negative he's not that good he sounds not always good sometimes he sounds way out there in a wonderful way and it's beautiful but a lot of times it's not good. I think playing guitar is easier with pattern recognition where we always understand the feeling and the intervals in between notes ... The patterns of the chords change in relation to the other things being played And the scales and modes and all that stuff I feel like no one should ever skip that part of guitar where you learn patterns. But most importantly more than everything in the whole wide entire world if you want to be a good musician with guitar the best thing you could do is play guitar a lot. .. and in the meaningful way that matches your goals. Your course is fine I just thought I'd put in there that ... Pattern recognition really helps me when I'm trying to do solos and things like that ... But you're right most guitarists play by patterns not by notes I like your videos I like Brandon's videos too you have good videos both of you but if you two were the flagship guitarists for learning notes instead of patterns You would do the opposite of convincing me to learn notes instead of patterns. Brandon seems pretty young though and I'm sure that the treasure trove of information that either of you have I don't think about him a lot but when people have so much knowledge I definitely like to soak up the knowledge. Instead what I would really recommend is being able to continue to play those patterns but to know what note you're starting on so that you can understand the feeling that you're going to produce by the pattern. You're right most guitarists play by patterns but I don't think it's a bad thing.

    • @ScoobyDoo-kt9pv
      @ScoobyDoo-kt9pv หลายเดือนก่อน

      I am not trying to talk bad about Brandon I think he has some of the best solos sometimes by the way but usually and generally ... It's not convincing Like when I couldn't solo I think that it seemed impressive But then I guess as I learned I noticed that I don't know his playing it's great because it's his playing but I don't want to play like him I don't want to sound like him.

    • @ScoobyDoo-kt9pv
      @ScoobyDoo-kt9pv หลายเดือนก่อน

      There's some metal guy and it's not shred ... I don't like that he is Satanist But there's some metal guy and I like them I like his videos just like I like a lot of videos I don't tell him I don't want to name him but when I hear the solos that he makes you know there's some of them there was one that was really really good and I learned most of it and I think it's one of the best solos that I play because I learned it But like a lot of his solos is just terrible madness it's not even good at all I feel like it's his first year playing guitar or something. Can people talk about how to learn and I just think that it's important to learn the shapes because you're going to be reusing those shapes all the time and ... You can just play the same thing up a key without doing any math or anything or thinking about the notes I think the patterns really help I think people shouldn't underplay the patterns the patterns that guitarists play by are very important I play piano too and most people that play piano play by notes but I still play by patterns even on a piano.

    I'm not a TH-camr, but I can tell you that you'd be better off starting the short with a compelling demonstration and then explaining. This video doesn't communicate credibility, it just seems like an amateur trying to sell something. Nah, that's bull. People do that naturally. In fact I would guess even your example, Jimmy Page, never studied music theory. Did Louis Armstrong? Did Paul McCartney? It's value is being a communication tool, part of the language along side the score. I see it as something that would make team composition a world easier than without it. Learning a song second hand would certainly be helped by it. But as soon as it goes from tools to rules, nope. I ain't down for that.

    • @Jamsville
      @Jamsville หลายเดือนก่อน

      Louis Armstrong definitely knew music theory 😂 and Paul McCartney had George Martin to take ideas from. You’re literally self admittedly guessing nonsense. Jimmy Page also took lessons from John McLaughlin who was classically trained. Unless he specifically said “please John, don’t teach me any music theory!!!!” Then he certainly learned his theory. He was also a session musician and anyone who doesn’t know theory is instantly getting fired on sessions because they’ll be wasting everyone’s time trying to figure stuff out in the studio. Let’s just stop all music education and tell all the kids who can’t do it “naturally” that they ain’t as good as Paul McCartney and to go do something else with their lives. 😂😂😂 Who’s talking about rules? I literally said it’s so you can understand what you’re playing and you just completely ignored the entire point of the video and started talking about muh rules. God these comments are so insufferable.

      @@Jamsville Don't be so fragile, and cut the weak straw man BS. You said once you understand it, via theory, *then* you can change it and make it your own. That's a bogus made up rule, and a load of 100% Grade A crap. You don't need theory to do that and to tell aspiring musicians that's the only way when that is in fact something that does indeed come naturally deserves the push back. There are reasons to learn it, but that is not one.

      So you perceived that the implication is that you can't change it if you don't learn music theory.... That wasn't the implication. But if you know music theory you'll be able to do it much more quickly and effectively. If we're gonna be so literal, the title says "the real reason to learn music theory" ... not " the reason you HAVE to learn music theory" I never said you HAVE to do anything.... but carry on discouraging people from learning more about how music works.

    I don't know if I'm an idiot or if I'm musically dyslexic. I've tried everything to understand theory. Even bought "Music theory For Idiots." Still couldn't focus on it. I read rhythms perfectly. I'm a rudimental snare drummer at a high level. However, when my drum instructor tried moving me to marimba so i could learn other percussion, i couldn't get it. It's definitely a learning disability. 🤦‍♂️

      For sure! Also what they’ll do is take out the middle note too. But still essentially the same idea, like in the song Scar Tissue
