The turntable at GWR swindon is still there, but sadly in a poor state, as an employee at GWR and young man in my early 20's i watched it being used many times marveling at how just 2 men could mover such immense machines with relative ease. fond memories.

Excellent account. The gangway rubbing plates are an important reason för the steady ride you get in a mark 1 coach. Blood and custard was universal until 1955 when maroon became the standard and the Southern and GWR liveries were reintroduced. Because Southern green was standard for electric stock it may be that some Southern Railway locomotive hauled stock was "incorrectly" repainted into green livery and never received the BR livery.

Depends on the geography. On this line there is the climb to Washford from Blue Anchor and then the constant climb to Crocombe Heathfield from Wiliton.

Better then doing a year at school ! Thenk you SIR or.. ;) With the picture of the vacuum brake would be nice to circle around of parts when talking of each of them so easier to follow, a paused serveral times to search the part you talking about and then need to rewind to be able to follow. But for the rest really good and informative video, even for me as a non english speaking person. Greetings from Belgium Neighbour

Good video. One tiny technical correction though - the science of "stopping on a rising brake" is not because "as the speed of the train gets less it has less energy" as mentioned - although that is true - the real reason is that as the speed of the wheels against the brake blocks gets lower, the friction coefficient increases. So for the same brake pressure or vacuum, the drag applied to the wheels increases significantly as it comes towards a halt. Releasing the brake a little, to reduce the force on the brake block just as the wheels are coming to rest, compensates for the higher friction to avoid that jarring stop. Same with your car brakes - the friction between pad and disc increases at low speed, so releasing the foot brake a little gives a smoother stop. You see the same effect when a loco slips under hard driving - it can be pulling and accelerating quite hard, when the wheels are not slipping on the rails, but if a little too much power is applied and the wheels just start to slip the friction reduces so the acceleration of the train reduces and the wheels spin faster. To regain peak traction, you have to slacken the regulator until the wheels actually stop slipping and the friction is maximised. I'm a tribologist (scientist who deals with friction) who happens to have driven steam engines sometimes! Mostly 5" gauge live steam but occasionally full size. Marion

What an absolutely wonderful and interesting video packed with so much information, really educational. I must admit I've always had a preference for the old Mk1s in whatever format. So much nostalgia from when I used to travel from Penzance to Bristol Temple Meads as a kid in the early 60's. It used to be so exciting and so much fun walking up and down the corridors back in the day...
