Coeval : Flying The Fellow By HQ Kites | Sky Rider Limited
This video was an interesting one to make. This weeks kite is one that I love and yet struggled with. Meet the HQ Fellow. The Fellow is one of those kites that in the right hands are incredibly capable but is also ready to show you your own inadequacy. I do love lots of things about it, but the Fellow is just not as friendly as some kites.
From the long time powerhouse kite producer Invento HQ who brought us kites like the Jam Session and Tramontana comes another kite with an emphasis on balance, the Fellow. Bouncy and bit on the heavy side the Fellow will definitely thank you for a bit more wind than your average standard but once it finds some power you will be hard pressed to find a more precise flyer. This came as something of a shock to me with its all 6mm pultruded frame, but it carves a corner with grace. HQ’s own description talks about relaxing with the Fellow and I think they have the right of it. Nowadays we are so driven to create and find the most capable freestyle kites but there is something to be said for clean relaxation, what some might term old school, flying of a good precision kite. That’s not to say the Fellow can’t do some tricks but its 2.5 meter bulk makes you work for it. The Fellow does have one thing that truly love though, from its massive winglets we get an unbelievably stable stall and more importantly stable slide. I love a winglet, I have said it many times. The traditional reason for a winglet is to expand the window of a kite and in that the Fellow is no exception. The Fellows wind window is massive but a byproduct of this is a over stable condition when the kites forward flight is stalled and as a result an edge to edge or any part there of slide is more than possible, its relatively easy.
Over all the Fellow is enjoyable though it may not be for everyone. It’s a kite for a specific mood, and if you find yourself in need of an unwinding, then I can whole heartedly recommend the Fellow as the perfect instrument for relaxation. Enjoy.

Since I began to fly again, there has been a short list of now rare kites I have been chasing. When I was little and flying in competition with my dad, we were sponsored flyers for most of our career. That meant we only flew kites from our sponsors. As a result, lots of incredibly cool kites had to go wanted but unacquired. I’m not saying I was deprived or anything, on the contrary, if you have...

Great flying and edit.😎out of curiosity what line set do you use?....everyone has a good to!! Paul..🇬🇧
Climax Protec 20mx 50daN. Thanks for watching!
You've really captured that late '90s laid-back style of tricks flowing one into another.
Thanks! I really appreciate that, thanks for watching
Back to basic!
Sometimes the basics are the best
You said kite tricks? Where?
Thanks for watching
@ 😂
The stuttering in the image is really annoying. Nice kite though.
Sorry you feel that way, I really like they look of that effect personally
@ as an effect it’s fine in itself but it’s hard to follow the flow of the kite.. But it’s your video of course 😁
Yo, id totally get high with ya then fly kites to this song! 😁
Not really my thing. Sorry
@SkyRider1987 Shrooms? 😁
@ I’m going to respectfully ask you to keep the comments here pg rated at most or I’m going to have to remove your comments. I have no issue if you would like to participate in those activities but, as I said above, I don’t and I would appreciate it if you would keep discussions on those sorts of activities out of my comment section. Thanks for watching
Boooo for it coming from Tickie Tock
It’s coming from my GoPro. I post to several platforms including TH-cam, instagram, TikTok and facebook. Most of my shorts tend to get uploaded to TikTok first as it has the best and most user friendly editing experience available. Sorry if this is an issue for you.
😂 Like ya said, it came from Tickie Tock !
@@sheldonmurphy6031whatever my guy. Good luck with whatever your issue is.
What’s a rolling Susan? I know lazy Susan’s but..
Also called a Snap Lazy Susan, a rolling Susan is enters in a way other than through a turtle/backfilp. It’s the in stride version if you like.
@ thanks for responding! I’ve been a2y from trick kiting for over a decade and recently restarted but there’s so many new tricks who are hard to learn without seeing hand movements. Thanks for your videos, they’re really helpful!
Super! Toevallig zondag ook op de Mechelse heide aanwezig (bij juffrouw tok)? Zou dit graag eens van dichtbij zien..
I’m sorry I’m not sure where that is so probably not. I’m based in the north eastern USA.
I noticed the pilot was wearing headphones. Was he listening to the song as he flew, or was the flight and music just synched up in editing? Either way, the flight and music went together very well. Loved the simple black and white color scheme of the kites. Absolutely beautiful.
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it! To answer your question, yes this time and for all the performance routine style flying you see on the channel I’m listening to the music that you hear while flying and then the track is added and re-synchronized in edit. For the freestyle videos I’m also wear headphones (to be honest I don’t know why I was wearing the white ones in this video as tend to prefer earbuds personally) but I’m listening to a playlist of music which all has a fairly consistent tempo, kind of like a metronome. Again, thanks for watching and asking the question!
@SkyRider1987 , thanks for the response. I've been watching some of your other videos and will most likely be commenting on those as well. I'm getting into kiting for the 1st time since being a kid (30+ years) and never really understood the multi line kites. I recently bought a Prism Synaspe 140, 1st dual line kite, and loving it. Then I found videos of the framed dual line kites. I ordered a Neutrino with 2 stackers because they really caught my attention with how they present in the sky. That led me to your incredible video(s) and channel. Great piloting, I'm really looking forward to seeing more from you.
Welcome to the community! Glad you’re enjoying and you’re getting into it!
Nice flying!
Thanks! 👍
I've had my eye on this kite, nice to see it gets used properly 🙃 Keep up the good work! 👍
That’s a great option
I've been having such trouble with yo-yo's. My nose always pulls upward and I usually have to do a messed up axel recovery to come out. I'll figure it out this winter.
That's a good song. And as always, nice flying!
It would be cool if you made easy to understand trick tutorials
Thanks ✌
I’m not great at that sort of content so I tend to leave that sort of tutorial to others. But thanks for reaching out!
@@SkyRider1987I’ll give ya $100 cashapp to make a video breaking down the comet
Looks like a nice kite, needs more screen time!
Oh there’s tons of videos with it on my channel. That said maybe it’s time I took it out again.
So cool, Ron
Nice one
Thanks!
I wanna see you mess a trick up lol. you make it look so easy and flawless. Silky smooth.
Oh it happens all the time. For every minute of footage that makes it to the channel there is 10 or so that just looks weird or I screwed something up or I just didn’t like it. Messing stuff up is part of the game and part of life. Just keep practicing, that’s all it is.
I need to get a UL
Lots of great options out there. What’s your budget like?
@@SkyRider1987 Verry small
Wow! Almost!!!
So close, right!
So how does Frank rank in your kite bag? A favorite?
Frank is awesome. Definitely a favorite. It’s super easy to get along with
Nice video, too bad it’s so expensive to get one shipped to the Netherlands…
Yeah international shipping has gotten out of control. Best bet would be to make friends with a British flyer and maybe get one hand carried to a festival. Thanks for watching
Good stuff!
Glad you enjoyed it
cool
Thanks!
I have one of these kites, I bought decades ago, in a shop on Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. The flight characteristics are different, since with four control lines, making 90 degree turns, is fast and easy. It's possible to spin them around so fast, the possibility of losing count for unspinning them is easy
You are correct, yours is probably a revolution. The kite here is a djinn, sort of an evolved version of the revs. Same concept but more precise and expressive.
Onde encontro???
Check out HQ Kites online!
That's awesome 👌
Old stuff all this 😊 We have to move forward and design/develop new spars Same frame 15 years before have nothing how the kites flying today especially in tricks❤ I can tell you 2PT in full size kite can handle winds from 0 to 35km+ 🙌
First of all building a kite that size with that framing is an incredible achievement. Well done! Second you are 100% correct on the no new framing point. It’s an interesting question, what would you change? Material? Taper rates? That might need some examination.
That's awesome
Really enjoyed this video. What a wealth of information. Thks Jesse.
Glad it was helpful! Cheers!
Thank you Sky Rider. How do you compare the Ultim line with some of the other top kites out there atm? Cheers ;)
The Ultim was a very easy connection for me but I think it depends on what type of flying you are looking to do. I like a competition kite as I tend to fly with a mixed discipline style. If you want pure freestyle the antidote and FX compare favorably to many of the current kings of class like the Superfly. The Ultim is decidedly French in the best ways and again compares well to kites like the Supernova or Canvas Intention
@@SkyRider1987 thank you that helps. I am a big fan of the Nirvana, Talon, XTS and Cosmic TC. I guess I like the bigger kites, however, I haven't tried the newer kites mentioned (been away for a while). Nothing wrong with trying a few out. Thanks again :)
Ooh wow! Floppy! 👍
Yeah it’s good fun to throw around.
A form of meditation, in sync with nature 🙏

Amazing skills💪
Thanks ✌
nice video, nicer musik!
Glad you enjoyed
Why does that look like an object clipping into the ground in a video game
That’s definitely a new one!
Get a used stunt kite for the Facebook kite groups or from other flyers to learn on or a cheap Prism or HQ, good lines and straps. Tons of great videos on YT to learn from. First trick you want to learn is…LANDING! 😊.
I would generally avoid used for a first kite for a bunch of reasons like potential pricey repairs.
@@SkyRider1987 Most of my kites are used from benson to R-Sky.
@@MindRiderFPV I’m glad you have had positive experiences with the second hand market. I generally advise against that for truly new flyers as the skills for repair and reconditioning are an additional thing to learn and may take away from the experience of learning to fly.
@@SkyRider1987 I bought undamaged used kites, like most are unless specified, that were kept with care and in good flying conditions, maybe a patched sail or some wear but that’s iit. You can save a lot of money while learning.
@@MindRiderFPV again I’m glad you have had that positive an experience. A truly new flyer might not know what to look for or what they are looking at. Additionally I’d like to point out that most of the kites you will find and that you mentioned are not appropriate for a first kite like we are discussing in this video. Fair winds
What is your favorite length of line to fly or what do you find easiest to learn/practice new tricks? 30ft, 50ft, 80ft, etc.?
Longer lines slow things down and give more time but are also harder to manage. It is easier to loose that critical tension and harder to find it again. As always though I would look at what the kite designer recommends for each kite as line length is an often overlooked part of design behavior. Thanks for your question!
We all know having a large array of kites available is best case scenario. Especially as no one single kite is going to be excellent in all wind conditions. With that being said, for an Intermediate flier who is wanting to advance in more tricks/slack line flying. What would be your go-to recommendation for the 7-18mph variable wind range? In the Midwest it usually isn't steady like the beach but rather up and down. In addition, what would be your low-wind recommendation 2-7mph? (Trying to determine what two kites could fill the window I would be flying in most)
There are very few kites that will happily cover off that range in just two versions. I would say three is doable. In the 2-7 range something like a Spur SUL by Canvas could be an excellent edition to your bag. Really you want some over lap so 5-14mph an Ultim by Wind-R, A Supernova by Benson Kites, or a Spiderkites Abraxas are all high on my list. Lastly for the upper range, 12+ mph, I would recommend the Ultim Mid Vent by Wind-R or the Intention Vent by Canvas Kite Designs. Keep in mind that vents are going to feel different when tricking and aren’t always helpful for the learning. Hope this helps. Thanks for your questions.
@@pauleiler5648 is absolutely correct about most of these. The Abraxas is about $200 us. In that category there are the widow pro classic around 200 and a new kite from Canvas coming soon. After that the second hand market or consider making something open source.
@@SkyRider1987 I appreciated your response and is exactly the advice I was looking for. It's nice to at least have a starting point. I've actually flown the Widow Pro Classic and loved it!! I'm also excited to see the new Canvas release, hopefully soon!
Amazing ❤
Thank you!
Nice, exciting that this big boy is trick able 👍 thx bro 🙏
Absolutely! It’s a really fun way to trick too. It’s so big that everything is sort of in slow motion
Camera angle rocks!
Thanks!
Thanks for sharing the old school kites. I remember seeing these kites on the Gwtw kite forums back when Steve hall was running that website.
