Polaris Ranger Oil Tank Exploded! I fix it and upgrade
มุมมอง 237ปีที่แล้ว
In this video I replace the oil tank reservoir on my 2008 Polaris Ranger 500 4x4. The vent line filled with condensation from plowing snow, froze and caused pressure to build up in the tank, eventually leading to a catastrophic failure. I replace the tank with an aluminum one and hopefully the problem is fixed.

    Appreciate all the details in the video(s). Are you using 115v or 230v and how far are you from your breaker? I ordered a 1HP 115v unit yesterday and I'm a bit concerned with the distance to my power. Thanks!

    • @ballhammerindustries
      @ballhammerindustries หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm using 115v, the cord on the unit is 50', I have a 10ga 100' extension cord and another 10ga 50' for a total of 200' of cord from my power source, I've never had an issue with tripping a breaker. The only issue I've had was water intrusion into where my two extension cords connect, the joint was exposed to the elements which was not a great idea, this year I have the joint sealed with dielectric grease and duct tape to keep the water out

      @ballhammerindustries 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It seems to be holding up pretty good, the only issue with the extension cord is I'm noticing at the connection between two extension cords the plug looks like its been arcing, I'm guessing this is from water intrusion from sitting out in the rain. This year all connections will use dielectric grease and some form of cover to keep water out. Other than that no issues

    I'm from the UK and have the very same 2000 Polaris 6x6 Sportsman 500. At the time of purchase 2018, it was not running and had a reported overheating problem. On the basis everything can be fixed, I purchased sight un-seen, as I was in China working and purchased it on line. The vendor was great and held onto the machine for one month, until I could collect it. A little technical reading and you find out there is a thermostat plug on the side of the engine, that will turn the engine off before overheating and doing damage. Bonus as this must have worked perfectly on my engine. What was the problem you ask ? Simply put the radiator cap, closes on a plastic piece of pipe that had become out of shape which prevented the cap from sealing. Changed the pipe out and the radiator cap and the problem was fixed for about USD $50 (GBP 35 pounds). Best purchase ever, have used it on our small holding for five years, in all weather and it has never let me down. Use it to pull 1000L water buts, Spread fertilizer, Tow a flail mover, Rake grass and load up with six bales of hay in the middle of winter to feed our Alpacas and Horses. The best machine ever for working and pleasure. You did not mention how fast these Polaris 6x6 500cc are ,when you give them full throttle. Super fast and not for beginners ! For anyone thinking of purchasing a non-runner, just do it. You don't have to be an expert to fix them, parts are available and there is plenty of help out there if you do struggle, even on a budget.

    If you destroy this one... buy a mini bike header and get a small car muffler. Im doing this right now as my HF chipper killed the stock muffler. The mini bike header you want is heavy wall pipe... mine was painted black with a slash cut tip and maybe $15ish total. The heavy wall pipe is what ive built turbo manifolds out of and it's basically required in these high exhaust temp/high vibration applications. It's a great cheap starting point for a custom muffler setup. Might also be able to get a cheap/free used OEM motorcycle muffler. The Japanese V-twin bikes all have oem mellow exhaust.

    • @ballhammerindustries
      @ballhammerindustries 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I've seen several 6x6's with over the wheel tracks, there was a company that made a plastic set of tracks for these, a local ski hill had a machine with them. As far as comparing this to a side by side, I have a Polaris Ranger that's about the same year and same engine but fuel injected and honestly they do about the same in the snow but I've had better luck with the Ranger, but that could be due to the better tires. Adding tire chains will make a night and day difference to either machine

    Every motorized piece of equipment "ran when it was parked xxx years ago." Sure, that's most likely how it got to its parking spot. $500 is a good buy. It leaves plenty of room in the budget to fix what's broken and improve its looks. Always check the oil, drain the gas (put new gas in), check the radiator, clean out the air box. No telling what condition any of these liquids are in and what vermin has taken up residence in the air intake. Don't want to suck in any debris into the cylinder and make problems worse.

    Hey David, Thanks for this great 2 part video series, it's been instrumental in the design and now construction steps of my own similar rig. I've got most of the parts, equipment, rope, motor, and lumber so far but I've yet to start cutting and assembling anything together. The One part I'm unsure of is what hardware to buy and how I should drill the holes for the bolts. Can you provide me any guidance on what drill bit/what size/length bolts I should be using for holding stuff together. Was also wondering if I needed to use bolts for structural reasons or if I could use standard construction screws instead? I've got most of the tools but none of the confidence in what I'm doing. Still prepared to have to make design changes down the road like your part 2 here. Thanks in advance!

    • @ballhammerindustries
      @ballhammerindustries 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I used galvanized bolts to make sure everything was as solid as it could be. I bought them in packages from Menards, but Home Depot or Lowe's probably has them too, Menards was the cheapest. I used galvanized since I've seen the cheap zinc coated bolts (even grade 8) start to corrode within a year when used in high-moisture environments in treated wood. Most of the construction was using 3/8" bolts, they seem to have the best balance between clamping force and cost, I've snapped many 5/16" bolts but 3/8" will pull itself into the wood without snapping, just use a 3/8" drill bit for 3/8" bolts, lengths of bolts will vary depending on which portion you're bolting, I took several trips to find the right lengths for various parts. You could probably get away with construction screws but there is a lot more torque running through this system than you'd think, when using wood, my suggestion would be to stick with bolting it together, it's worked great for me. Good luck with the build and don't hesitate to ask any more questions!

    Hey David, awesome video! Attempting to build one right now! Thank you for the parts list. Can you let me know what size sprockets you used. Some of the links no longer work in your description. What size did you use for those two larger white sprockets, I think one was 72t? (not the tension sprocket). Also, if you can provide the info on the smaller axle. The 36 inch link worked. Such a cool project and the kids (and me) will love it!

    • @ballhammerindustries
      @ballhammerindustries 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The two larger sprockets are both 72t, the small sprocket on the jackshaft is 15t, and the small sprocket on the engine is 11t. I basically found the largest and smallest sprockets I could find to gear it down the most I could. If you can't find those specifically don't sweat it, even at idle this seems like it could pull an elephant out of the mud and there is plenty of RPM to go if you wanted to run it faster, so I feel like if you get the gearing even close in either direction to what I have, you will be fine. I used one single 36" axle shaft and cut it in half. Good luck with the build, it's a lot of fun!

    I had the same exact issue with the carburetor bowl screws. 3 out of 4 were stuck, couldn't even get them with vice grips. Ended up using a hacksaw to carefully notch the heads turning them into slotted screws. Even then I had to use a flat tip screwdriver and a hammer to knock them loose. Tipped the screwdriver about 45 degrees and up against the inside edge of the slot then tapped it with the hammer to make it pop loose counterclockwise.

      Yes, it's nice to be able to keep the bucket flat while over ground that you want to be careful with, and you can still tip it to get the cutting edge right down to the surface if you want

    July 4, just watched your video. I am in northern MN and am bought 3/4 hp unit. Hasn't arrived yet. Are you happy with yours? Will it move the muck?

      Overall I have been happy, it will move muck but I've found it will also pile it up, so it's best to move the unit around on your dock so you don't end up with big underwater piles of muck that can potentially be more troublesome than the muck in the first place
