Making games inspired by the Early 2000s
I’ve always been obsessed with early 2000s mini-games as they’re actually the reason why I developed an interest in game dev/game design!
In this video, I decided to make a few mini-games (using figma) inspired by that Y2K vibe and share my creative process along the way.
From pixel art to UI design, graphic design, and illustration, I worked with different mediums to recreate that nostalgic feel.

This project felt especially fulfilling because I was able to bring both my partner's and my idea to life. Pla...
Learning Pixel Art from Scratch in 30 Days (My journey & advice)
มุมมอง 15K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
As someone who's interested in making video games and game development, I really wanted to learn pixel art, just so I could have it in my toolbox for future projects. I never tried or dabbled in pixel art before this, so I am learning completely from scratch! Initially, it seemed very overwhelming and out of my comfort zone, but I'm glad I started. For me, that was definitely the hardest part! ...

This is really cool! You’ve made some really neat stuff!
Thank you so much! 😄
This is the reason why people say limitation breeds innovation and creativity. People made games in powerpoint and excel. This is in the same spirit. just lovely ❤
This is the sweetest comment, thank you so much! 💗
You might like Rive editor! It may help you add programming logic to your art using tools really similar to figma, but even more capable than what figma can offer
I never heard of it, but just looked it up and it looks super cool! Thank you for the recommendation, will definitely check it out! 😄🥰
So cuteeeeee
@@gabriela_xy aaaa thank you sm! 🥹💗
So cuteee! You guys nailed the cozy vibes! 2 weeks is such a short time this is insane. Thank u tor this inspiring video!! 💗💗
Thank you for the kind words!! I'm glad you found this inspiring 💗
woaa so cool
Thank you!!
Love the editing quality and the presentation. Your art is amazing, so keep it up!
Thank you so much! ❤😄
The first tutorial you made is also the first one I followed to learn Blender! 😄 It really taught me what I needed to transition from Maya to Blender without too much difficulty! I also made the Mushroom in a Bottle! Blender is such a fun software! 🥰
It was a bit challenging for me, but it felt like such an accomplishment when I finished 😄 And oooh, do you enjoy Blender more than Maya now? :)
@@lynnledesignDefinitely! Even though it was pretty hard to forget the old shortcuts and learn the new ones, I feel like modeling in Blender is way smoother! But I haven’t tried animation or rigging yet 🥺
For Pixel Art, I love Pixquare! It's just like Procreate but for Pixel Art on iPad 😄
I heard really good things about it, I will check it out, thank you for the recommendation!! 😄
I really love everything about your video! 🥰 I don’t know how to code either, but I’ve made a few small games in Figma just for fun. It’s such a handy tool. Also, great idea with the Y2K theme. It’s my childhood and brings back so many memories. I think what I remember the most are Chapatiz, Neopets, and all the restaurant and dress-up games I used to play! 💖💖
Thank you so much for the sweet sweet words 💖 And Figma is super handy! It really helped me bring a lot of ideas to life, though I definitely do plan on learning how to code 😄 And ahh, Neopets brings back so many core memories for me! 🥰
@@lynnledesignI would definitely like to learn programming eventually too 😤 I know a bit of Unity with Visual Scripting, and I'm checking out Game Maker. Your videos make me want to document what I learn one thing at a time! I love the pace at which you learn one thing after another! It feels less overwhelming! ☺ I don't know what the name of the minigame is in English, because I played it in French, but I really liked the one with the ice cream in Neopets! It was 'Machine à glace' in French! 🤭
Do you have a favorite early 2000s game you used to play (or still do)? Let me know in the comments 🥰
Amazing video, also i would have liked if you went day by day. For example day 14 i watched said tutorial and dree this piece and so on
Thank you for the kind words! And that is good to note, will definitely keep this in mind for future similar videos! 😄
Starting too small can be demotivating because they're so basic and potentially harder because each pixel becomes a larger proportion of the sprite. I would advise starting with just lineart as it's the most similar to sketching and gives you a feel for how to create lines and shapes with pixel art. It also helps you learn to keep your work readable since you're not relying on color and shading to distinguish various shapes. You can also do silhouettes which help with proportions. Deconstruct and trace over existing pixel art that you like. It's much easier than doing other art studies since you can literally look at it pixel by pixel. Then try to combine bits and pieces from other people's art to kitbash your own sprites and scenes. This will get you used to making more complex figures that feel unique even though they use parts from other works. The act of then unifying those pieces will help you learn to adhere to a particular style creating a more cohesive look. I'm also not very experienced in pixel art or drawing but I've been held back a lot by trying too much at once making it impossible for me to figure out what parts in particular I need to improve on. A more focused approach where I practice a particular skill has been the most helpful and engaging for me because I can identify problems quickly and immediately look for how to improve that specific skill.
These are really good tips! I can see how starting small can be demotivating, though for me, starting small really helped me understand the foundations of pixel art :) Early in my journey, I tried to start with a 100x100+ canvas, and it felt overwhelming, though now that I am a little bit more experienced and understand the fundamentals, I do see the value in starting with line art to make more creative and detailed pieces!
Noice
Thank you!
Great video! I've been looking to start pixel art for a while, but always felt intimidated. Thanks to your inspiring video I just finished setting up my tablet and about to start my journey!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm so excited for you and I'm certain you'll create some cool stuff! 😄
this is so thoughtful! the trading cards are such a fun idea, i might do the same for my friends next Christmas lol. would love to see more of your design process making stuff you like!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm glad you found inspiration from this 🥰 And that's the plan! Thank you again for the sweet words and encouragement, it means a lot to me ❤❤
@@lynnledesign can't wait to see more videos!! your resourfulness given your limitations (b&w only printer, lack of certain materials, etc.) is super admirable btw!! <3
As an anxious procrastinating person this was motivating
I'm glad you found motivation from this, thank you for watching and supporting ❤🥰
Nice progress, I'm just working on some pixel art now for my college project. I hope I won't get burn out
Thank you for the kind words! And good luck on the project! You got this 😄
This brings back memories! I did pixel art and animation converting NES titles to PC computers using Deluxe Paint.
That's so cool! I used to admire pixel art back in the day, though doing it makes me realize how talented all you guys are 😆
thank you!! <3
Thank you for watching!! 😄
Great Video!
Thank you!
Wow I actually found an underrated channel before 2024 ends. Great video.
Thank you so much! This means a lot 😄
Might have a new youtuber to follow depending on how this video goes! So far I'm liking what I'm seeing 😊 I also love this idea in general Update: Okay, definitely subscribing! I thoroughly enjoyed watching you make this and I might do something similar in the future. This is so cool 😊 keep it up

As always, thank you for watching and being here! What would you like to see next?
i also do not have an art background but I always wanted to get into pixel art, great inspiration
I'm glad you found this inspiring :) Even with an art background, pixel art is still difficult, as it has its own quirks and learning curves 😅😄
Music from pocket ants?!?! Id tecognize it anywhere
I love your castle and cherry blossom! The camel was also really cool, and I loved the spider plant shading in your last piece, the cat and bird one. Thanks for sharing!
Ahh thank you for the sweet sweet words! I appreciate the encouragement and support 💞
Really love the fact that you document your progress every video 🎉🎉
Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate the support! ❤
@ Would u be interested in discussion a potential collab? Im working on game and i think ur style would bring something unique to it
I was struggling with starting small. I just felt unsatisfied with everything. I was able to find what felt to be the right size for me, which is 100×100. I used it even when I draw something that maybe more fit with smaller canvas size. Limiting colors is really helpful for me. I was never good with coloring, and still struggling to this day, I just used those available palettes on the internet. I started with 4 color and gradually added more. Still very overwhelmed by more than 8 color tho.
I can definitely see where you're coming from! 100x100 is a pretty good size in general! It's big enough to add different details and elements, but isn't too big to the point where it's overwhelming. I also agree on the limited color palette! I am trying to implement that now, definitely saves time and brain energy :)
excuse me is Inktober from the youtuber Emirichu?
Inktober is a month long art challenge created by artist Jake Parker 🙂
Lovely concept for a game! So creative! +sub
Thank you for the kind words! I appreciate the support 💗
Yo there's chatgpt for code
Thank you for the suggestion! I will definitely check it out :) I plan on learning some key coding concepts/coding foundations but am definitely interested in using ChatGPT to help me with my weak areas in the future ☺
Watching your content always inspires me to continue on my pixel art journey. I actually made a channel (not this one) solely because i wanted to share my art in a similar video format as you. Keep up the amazing work and don't stop chasing your dreams!
Thank you for the kind words! I love that you're also on a creative journey 😊
Thank you for watching! Making this mini-game in a day was chaotic, but I'm glad I'm able to share it with all of you guys! If you could design a level in the game, what would it look like?
I just started learning Pixel art but I don’t have artistic background. I really enjoyed the video. Please keep sharing so ppl like me get inspired.
Thank you for watching and the kind words! Good luck on your pixel art journey, I'm sure you'll create some amazing art :)
Thank you so much,it’s really helpful for me.
Thank you for watching! I'm glad you found this helpful 🥰
Amazing art and Amazing channel! Can't wait to see what else you can come up with! Thanks for the resources so I can start on my own game dev journey!
Thank you so much for the kind words! I'm glad you're here and also happy you found this helpful! ♥
Love this so much!
Thank you so much for your kind words! 🥰♥
loved your journey >w<
Thank you so much!! ♥
Thanks for watching! I’m still a beginner, but I hope to share my pixel art in a game dev video soon! What type of game would you like to see?
i hope you show us more progress on your pixel art progress (i'm just starting to learn pixel art too and i want to see other people's progress. it motivates me) good luck!
Nice process and aesthetic. What is the music genre you're making? Animal Crossing Core?
Thank you! I'm still a beginner, so I just tried to make simple tunes with banjo/folk instruments, bass, and simple percussion 😄 as well as some synths!
/ᐠ。ꞈ。ᐟ\ so cool
Thank you 🥰♥
This is sooo COOL
Thank you so much!
Ahh I love this! I think it's awesome you made a prototype in Adobe XD, it's a great quick way to test features and gameplay (esp for more simple games like this) and prototype in general without having to code! This game has a lot of potential, and I think people might be especially into it if it has some deep or capturing storyline
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words! Maybe I'll look into expanding the game once I learn how to code 😃
So cute! I actually think you could make this game in Scratch or even Twine, very beginner-friendly game engines.
Thank you! I definitely want to utilize Scratch and make a video on it, I will keep that in mind!
this is so cute and fun to watch. its so brave to start, keep going!!
Ahh I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🥺 Thank you!!❤
hey, great work! Love the video :) I hope you can continue making games and videos about making game. It is a very good vibe!
Thank you so much! And that is the plan! 😊
