How Current Modes of HD Delivery Aggravate Sodium-Fluid Imbalance
We are excited to share with you the third Life/sodium episode, which explains how sodium-fluid imbalance is aggravated by current standard 3x4 hemodialysis delivery. However, adequate sodium management during hemodialysis treatment may prevent hemodynamic disturbances. An underlying cause of volume overload is the diet-related increase in plasma sodium concentration in the interdialytic period. The management of sodium, fluid, and hemodynamics in hemodialysis patients requires a multifactorial strategy and a personalized approach.

Pathological Consequences of Sodium-Induced Fluid Overload
มุมมอง 7K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
The pathological consequences of sodium-induced fluid overload are discussed in the context of the cardiovascular health of CKD and hemodialysis patients. In addition, the video highlights the impact of fluid overload and how to manage these consequences in hemodialysis patients.
Sodium-Water Homeostasis in healthy individuals
มุมมอง 1.1K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
Kidneys have many vital, biological functions, which are disturbed in the CKD patients leading to detrimental health effects. Let’s have a closer look at kidney function in the maintenance of the overall fluid balance and sodium homeostasis. By understanding the delicate balance of sodium and water within the body, we can gain deeper insight into the pathological consequences of sodium-induced ...

The Nephrology campus is a continuous online learning platform providing on demand scientific lectures, educational videos, podcasts, interviews, and many other scientific highlights. Today we would like to invite you to watch the interview with Prof. Dr. Christoph Wanner, ERA President and the scientific co-chair of the Life/nephrology campus. In the interview Prof. Wanner expressed his enthus...
Prof. Dr. Peter Stenvinkel: Shares His Scientific Highlights from 60th ERA Congress in Milan
มุมมอง 198ปีที่แล้ว
No doubt, one of the biggest highlights were the remarkable findings from the CONVINCE trial presented by Prof. Dr. Peter Blankestijn in the late breaking clinical trial session. This groundbreaking study demonstrated that high-volume Hemodiafiltration (HV-HDF) offers significant clinical advantages for patient survival compared to the more commonly used high-flux Hemodialysis. Prof. Dr. Peter ...
Prof. Dr. B. Canaud: CONVINCE - the breakthrough trial for high-volume HDF?
มุมมอง 701ปีที่แล้ว
At the 60th ERA Congress in Milan, Prof. Peter Blankestijn revealed remarkable findings from the CONVINCE trial. This groundbreaking study proves that high-volume Hemodiafiltration (HV-HDF) offers significant clinical advantages for patient survival in comparison to more commonly used high-flux Hemodialysis. Prof. Dr. Bernard Canaud is part of the trial's scientific committee and expressed enth...
Prof. R. Masereeuw: Engineering cell-based kidney replacement therapy
มุมมอง 156ปีที่แล้ว
In the kidney, epithelial cell transporters actively remove protein-bound uremic toxins from the blood, a process that can’t be replicated by the existing dialysis membranes. Bioartificial kidneys are a promising approach not only to equip dialysis membranes with the ability to do so, but also to one day make these bioengineered tubules available for implantation. Prof. Roos Masereeuw in close ...
Prof. J. Kooman: AI-based applications in the treatment of patients on dialysis
มุมมอง 313ปีที่แล้ว
The future is almost here! Artificial Intelligence (AI) is soon going to help physicians make decisions by answering questions like: How likely is this aneurysm in an AV fistula going to rupture? Which patient will benefit from a pre-emptive intervention? What is the risk of hospitalization many months down the road? Prof. Jeroen Kooman reviews both the great potential of machine learning in di...
Prof. L. Juillard: Measuring intracellular phosphate and ATP depletion
มุมมอง 151ปีที่แล้ว
Phosphate removal by haemodialysis is characterized by a plateau in serum phosphorus despite constant dialytic phosphate removal. The source of this refilling effect has been an object of speculation for decades. Recently, Prof. Juillards studies in animals and HD patients have allowed him and his team not only to measure the course of intracellular phosphate and ATP levels during dialysis, but...
Prof. A. Davenport: Dialyzer bioincompatibility: The importance of design and biomaterials

Dialysis membranes are large plastic surfaces designed for intense interaction with human blood. They consist of a main polymer to which other chemicals are added to increase flexibility. In addition, glue and potting compounds may be present resulting from the manufacturing process and may not only be washed into the patient's body, but cause inflammation and platelet activation. This highligh...
Prof. G. Castellano: The complement system and its central pillar for innate immune response
มุมมอง 122ปีที่แล้ว
The complement system is well known for its pivotal role in the immune response, but did you know that it also accelerates a detrimental way of aging, so-called “inflammaging”? Prof. Castellano explains how overstimulation of the complement system damages different organ systems and promotes not only Alzheimer’s Disease or Age-related Macular Degeneration, but also kidney senescence since certa...
Life/insights#1: New CKD therapeutics

Watch the most recent interview with Prof. Christoph Wanner to learn about a breakthrough in CKD therapy. As a co-investigator of the EMPA-KIDNEY Trial, Prof. Wanner discusses how the SGLT2-inhibitor, Empagliflozin, has significantly decreased the risk of progression of renal failure and cardiovascular death compared to placebo. The study was even terminated early due to the benefit of the drug...
Prof. T. Ebert: Oxidative stress inflammation and post-translational modifications in CKD patients
มุมมอง 316ปีที่แล้ว
Stopping or at least impeding the progression of CKD - this is the ultimate goal of CKD therapy, yet it is far from being widely achieved. A profound understanding of pathophysiology is at the centre of all such endeavours, and science learned a lot about the balance between pro- and anti-inflammatory factors, pro- and antioxidant stress mediators, and post-translational modifications that medi...
Prof. M. Grooteman: Inflammation & biocompatibility in dialysis
มุมมอง 187ปีที่แล้ว
First, do no harm! This well-known medical principle is challenged when dialysis itself augments the inflammatory state that is already present in CKD patients due to their disease and lifestyle conditions. Incompatible dialysis membranes and endotoxins in dialysis water have been well-known culprits in this issue for many years, but recently science has revealed more details of the multifactor...
Prof. Raymond Vanholder: Dialysis membranes and uremic toxins
มุมมอง 519ปีที่แล้ว
Removing certain uremic toxins with dialysis does not equal “renal replacement therapy”. Many metabolic products are actually beneficial - how can their dialytic removal be counter-acted? And how can patient related outcomes help us discern which molecules should be removed? Watch Prof. Vanholder introduce the paradigm shift that is taking place in our perception of uremic toxins.
