How to take Winning Photos of Statues and Sculptures
In this video, I head into the heart of Lincoln to track down some of its iconic statues and sculptures, using my Olympus EM1 Mark II along with both the 17mm and 45mm f/1.8 lenses. I start off with a striking shot of the lion statue in the Arboretum, capturing the sun bursting through its outline to create a starburst effect. From there, I move on to the statue of the man on the plinth in the Lawns, experimenting with angles that highlight the statue’s strong lines against its surroundings. Finally, I visit the grounds of the Usher Gallery to photograph two sculptures, using the 45mm lens to isolate their finer details and textures.
Photographing statues and sculptures requires a careful balance between framing, light, and perspective. I like to move around the subject, finding the right angle that gives the statue a sense of presence while paying attention to the way the light falls. For example, when shooting the lion, I positioned myself to catch the sunlight in a way that added depth and drama to the image. The key is to create a composition where the statue commands the scene, whether through symmetry, scale, or the contrast between the statue and its backdrop. Sometimes, I’ll use a wide aperture to blur the background, drawing focus directly onto the textures and details of the sculpture itself, like with the statues at the Usher Gallery.
Throughout this journey in Lincoln, I share tips and insights on how to make the most of the natural light and surroundings, using both wide and close-up shots to tell a story. Each statue has a different feel, and I try to bring that out through thoughtful composition and lens choices, so stick around for some hands-on advice on photographing statues in urban settings.

    I bought mine in 2011. After using bulky 4/3s DSLRs the E-PL3 finally fulfilled the 4/3's promise of small sensor = compact camera. I have never felt comfortable pointing a camera at a stranger, and when the subject is aware of the camera the composition is different. I usually shoot waist level. The tiny camera with its tilt screen is essential. To compensate for the E-PL3's limitations I finally bought a big boy camera with a real viewfinder , flippy screen, 20MP and built in mic jack. (Lumix GX8). I couldn't have made the decision without my beloved E-PL3 for my favorite style of photography. BTW I have a hot-shoe mounted mic jack. There in nothing like it available for the Olympus PEN F, hence my switch to Lumix.

      That is a great comment, and the E-PL3 is a good intro into Micro Four Thirds as you have proved. Lumix and Olympus have cameras to suit everyone. I know what you mean about shooting at hip level, because it is daunting doing street photography. Thanks a lot for your comment and happy shooting with your GX8.👍

    Very good video. Hull's a place I've wanted to visit for a while. With regard to Olympus, I used an E-330 for years (Four Thirds rather than Micro) and found the colours to be richer. Is yours a preference/settings thing, slight overexposure or an idiosyncrasy of the EM1? Solid photos at any rate.

      Thanks a lot for watching and for your nice comment. I only discovered Olympus just before lockdown and I bet you've got some great shots with your E-330. Exposure is an interesting question and I often change. I do only slightly underexpose mainly because I find it easier to recover details in the dark than light. I used to do this a lot at night but now go for a balanced exposure slightly over to reduce noise. Cheers 👍

    I included the tidal barrier to the left of 'the deep' (I did pretty much the same walk with my camera in early July). Those lighting conditions were difficult but as I was shooting with an infrared modidified dslr I wasn't worried. I was lucky enough to pick up one of these for peanuts not long before covid hit. At the time, these cameras seemed to have gone out of fashion. I wanted an easy camera to carry around instead of my Nikon full frame. After trying a series of small cameras with the awful 1/2.3" sensor size, the E-PL3 was a revelation. Five years later and my Nikon gear is largely gone, replaced by the E-PL3 and the EM-1 Mk2.

    It’s a T-Zed not a T-Zee. A ‘Travel Zoom’, pronounced as a Zzzzz not a Zeeee. Unless you are an American of course, a people who generally cannot pronounce ‘aluminium’ or ‘nuclear’ either. As for the camera, I had a TZ6 many years ago, mostly carried in my car for my travel photos. It was OK but nothing like the quality of photos now made by the better smartphones, especially not so in poor light. In good light, the zoom range is the uniques selling point of this compact camera. However, cropping an iPhone renders results that are at least as good. The focus system eventually gave up on mine and I never really missed the TZ, having bought a GX80 interchangeable lens camera that is in a different league and still very compact but not the zoom range. My son in law has it currently, being used on their Arctic cruise holiday combined with the 14-140 [28-280 full frame equivalent] f3.5-f5.6. Apart from anything else, this has far superior dust resistance and easy dust removal should it become necessary, while the TZ would require expensive professional teardown to remove sensor dust.

    Very interesting video! I tried really hard to love my TZ200, 1in sensor, 15x optical zoom, almost the same size as the TZ95. BUT it sucked in dust, had to pay nearly £150 to get it repaired to remove the dust from the sensor, and the image quality just wasn't that great in anything but perfect light. Also the Panasonic image app has not worked properly for about 3 months now so the remote control features don't work any more. If you own one, be very careful how you carry it, it's not dust sealed.

    After many years of using Olympus SP-590 UZ I just bought (cheaply, very cheaply!) such Canon. And now I'm learning a whole new world :)

    I've just taken delivery of one of these - with my OM-D E-M1 II it is an incredible combination. And having compared it to my Panny 20mm F1.7, I don't think I'll ever use the Panny again.

    • @MyPhotoJourney
      @MyPhotoJourney 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Amazing, it will be slightly slower than the Panny, but it is sharp and there is no purple fringing etc, well done and good luck with your images 👍

    • @clonmult
      @clonmult 21 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@MyPhotoJourney the aperture advantage of the Panny is negated by the autofocus speed being an occasional problem. One things for sure, I'm now enjoying photography again!

    The problem is phones always oversharpen. It looks horrible and the more you zoom in the worse it looks. Focus and stopping down the aperture (maybe using a tripod) would have helped but note that the Nikon NEVER oversharpens. Phone is fine if you don't care about detail but once you zoom in everything falls apart while the Nikon is just a bit out of focus.

    Ps. Is is much of a difference from the Olympus M Zuiko 14-42? This is the lens I currently have, which has stopped working!

    • @MyPhotoJourney
      @MyPhotoJourney 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The 14-42 is ok and you can get nice shots, but 12-40 is sharper and no purple fringeing. Perhaps use the 12-42 until you save up for the pro lens 🤔
