Samsung Washing Machine Defect - Imbalance, Vibration, Mildew Odor
มุมมอง 56K12 ปีที่แล้ว
We began having trouble with our Samsung washing machine (model number WF419AAU/XAA 01) when it was about 2.5 years old. Up to this point it was a pleasure to own and we had been very impressed with how well it works. Unfortunately, it broke down and we are very disappointed that it had had a major failure so early its life. The problem is that the unit would not balance during the spin cycle, ...

    I just came across this post because my machine is doing some knocking, but the manual states that I should be cleaning g the drum regularly with the pure cycle setting as well as cleaning the debris filter (which i honestly have not been doing). My machine is almost 10 yrs old and I only looked into this because i know there is a piece of clothing stuck under the drum. I use sensitive skin detergent so that might have helped but honestly it seems that I'm negligent as the owner. Based on what I have learned, others are right about detergent and if I would have done the recommended cleaning then the mold smell would be avoided by ensuring that I cleaned the rubber seal in addition. If I have to replace the flange then I will use the epoxy resin suggestion, but I dont blame the manufacturer because if I would have read the manual then I could have taken preventative steps.

    Basic chemistry: connect two different metals such as aluminum and stainless steel with a conductor such as a bolt and put them in a conductive fluid such as soapy water and you get a current and corrosion of one of the metals. A fundamental and possibly intentional design flaw of this machine. Bleach corrodes aluminum even without another metal around. Mine did last 8 years but without this flaw it would have lasted many more. The rest of it seems pretty sound. The pump clogged with all the residue of the disintegrating spider flange. I just ordered the parts but probably should have trashed it.

    The criminal manufactures and its dealership are gang up on consumers, as a results, this brand is dieing......I will never buy a Samsung w/d period... The core is corrosion of spider arms, due to it bolted directly to ss drum. bad engineering. An insulator washer will solve this problem. It simply di-electrolysis at work if you connect 2 different metal together, everyone know it, but manufacture's engineer???***&&^^%%$!!!

    For all those reading this. If you replace this part make sure you use Epoxy Resin Paint and coat the new spider. This will seal it and it will never happen again. Read up on it.

    Add my Samsung washer WF210ANW/XAA to the list! It is now vibrating excessively and is 3 months out of the extended warranty. I am very handy but will not attempt to repair as the parts spider, drum assembly, etc total around $300. As a mechanical engineer, I can see this is a design flaw by Samsung. Believe me when I say this is the last Samsung appliance I will purchase. Thank you Samsung!

    My Samsung has the same problem. I think the spider bracket has bent, I can see the tub wobble when spin it by hand, and it makes tremendous amount of vibration during spin cycles. Found out the wife has been over soaped the machine. She filled the liquid detergent up to the full mark every load for past 4 years. Great videos Thanks

    I'm trying to determine if the flange shaft is broken on my Samsung washer as well. One question I can't find an answer to is: Did the spin cycle remove the water from your clothes as usual, or were the clothes wetter then usual? I've had the banging loud noise during spin cycle and found very small pebble bits in the filter. No one ever mentions if this type of breakdown effected the dampness of clothes, caused by either improper drainage or the drum imbalance turning itself off. Asking in case it may be another issue, not the flange. Tks :)

    Had the surprise today when Sears came to inspect my Samsung front loader washer - Model WF350ANRXAA06 which was 3 years and 1 month old- paid $989 for it at Lowes. Was told it would cost $900 plus to repair. 3 person household, always used He detergent from the start, we keep it clean and take care of it. It was not abused in any way. I will never buy another Samsung product. The matching dryer needed a new door switch catch after 1.5 years, it broke apart. The model should be remarketed as : WTF350! Disgusted by poor quality again- Maytag was my previous model- Junk too. Here's to another $1K down the drain.

    I just replaced the flange shaft on my Samsung washer too. Only bought it 4 years ago and do maybe 3-4 loads each weekend. The problem is, I replaced the part and, while things are much better (it can hit max RPM in test mode when it would not do that before), it takes forever with a load to balance sufficiently to the point where it can spin at full speed (i.e. the 7 minute mark on the time lasts much longer than 1 minute). I'm wondering if the shocks may have worn while the machine was shaking so bad prior to the repair. Does anyone know if the shocks should have about 3/8" free play before damping kicks in? i.e. you can slide each shock in/out freely for about 3/8" after which it does effectively dampen movement. All 4 of mine do this and I'm thinking it is either normal or maybe they were worn from excessive shaking caused by a defective spider arm.

    • @funguyfirst1
      @funguyfirst1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought about that, but it seems like it still contains a viscous fluid and some ball bearings (or similar) and I read somewhere that a failure is really limited to the loss of the fluid from the ring. Any contrary thoughts or thoughts about how you know its gone bad?

    • @funguyfirst1
      @funguyfirst1 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have two springs and they are attached and seem to be functioning OK. I leveled the machine. I also replaced the shocks over the weekend with 4 new and it is still the same. It has trouble in the 200-400 RPM range and then beyond that (once it gets there) it starts to stabilize and gets very steady like it should be. I read more on the balancer ring and have to think it is OK because I noticed that the fluid "froze up" when I had the machine in my cold basement while under repairs and the ring was removed. This is actually a problem with some Samsung machines operated in cold locations where the ring does not function correctly until the fluid warms up and allows the balls to roll freely. I'd think, if the ring were a problem, it would be due to a fluid leak. I've also come to wonder if the machine may have always behaved this way and not it is just under my scrutinizing eye. The fact is, it does eventually get into that high speed spin overtime as far as I can tell...it just seems to take a lot of work and make a lot of noise getting there. I wish I could see others machines running, but have yet to find a video of a machine that someone didn't think was malfunctioning. By the way, thanks for taking the time to help.

    This looks like a user error for dumping too much laundry detergent into the machine. I took mine apart after 10 years and although it had some residue it was fine. I took another one apart and it look like yours and was 100% user fault for over using laundry detergent and also using "sulfuric acid" of washing machines: Fabric softener. That sh** basically sticks and softens/eats/corrodes the metal and kills your machine in no time. NEVER use fabric softener in a washing machine, load is with less soap then you think and it will last.

      will vinegar hurt the washing machine?

    • @sigor2011
      @sigor2011 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      randomrazr Absolutely not. It will help the machine by keeping the mildew and corrosion away. It will also be very well rinsed out by the end if the cycle and presumably by the washing cycles after while you will be doing the laundry.

    • @randomrazr

      vinegar wont corrode the alunimum sppider thing behind the drum?

    • @sigor2011
      @sigor2011 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      randomrazr I can't speak for what would happen if you would leave that aluminum thing in vinegar for day on end. But one time a month or two or 3 for a few minutes with a good rinse after does not harm it. Plus you rinse after often during regular wash. Regular soap residue and fabric softer does way more damage. I have same machine going on 10 years....

    Well after taking apart my washer, I too discovered my flange was broken. I had read someone thought it was due to bleach or the soap that caused it to break down prematurely, it turns out that's not the case. You see Samsung patented the process of electrolysis (US5921113 A) to clean the water thru the release of silver ions,thus getting rid of the mold issue on these front loading machines. Its that process that is making the flange assembly (aluminum) which is bolted to the tub (stainless) break down.....think of it as a boat motor in boating they install sacrificial zinc anodes to break down so boat motor made of aluminum and stainless remains unaffected in water, the higher the salt content the faster it breaks down. I discovered this after I ordered a new part and here it came out raw aluminum again and I wondered why was it not powder coated to slow down the breakdown process. So I gave my wife the choice install another flange and have it break in five years or I will powder coat it have it last 7-8 years and have mold issues. We went with leave it raw and install it and plan on it failing in 5 years from now.

      Thank you, this sounds a lot more reasonable than "you can't use washing machine products in a washing machine!" even though I never use bleach, fabric softener or normal detergent because I have a septic tank and I think this is what happened to me. Wish I had known before spending 2 grand. Also, it still gets a mildew smell from time to time that I clean with tablets anyway.

    • @chubbysumo2230
      @chubbysumo2230 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      don't powder coat it, get a chunk of silver, and a chunk of zinc. mount both into the flange, they should be towards the center, and fairly small, maybe 10g each. You will have to replace both after a few years, but the zinc chunk will protect the aluminum if they are directly touching, and the silver will have the same effect as them leaching the silver from the flange.

    Failure of the "Flange Shaft" is not unique to Samsung washers. Bosch, LG etc all have this "fault". There is only ONE domestic front loading washer with a fully STAINLESS STEEL flange, and that is Asko. Asko machines also have eliminated the rubber boot or door seal which, on all other washers, eventually gets mouldy and stinks. Asko washers can easily last 20 years and more, with reasonable care.

    As a professional service provider now for over 17 years who handles "Home Warranty Companies (not factory warranty) as well as retail, I find it disturbing that anyone who wants to blame somebody else for their faults feels they have the right to criticize manufactures for their own stupidity! And "So Called Technicians" that pry on the home owners by blaming the manufacture because they want the customer to lean on them so they can sell the job, well now... that is another letter I will have to write. Here is my story that most will not want to read or believe, And I am not one who writes these illiterate letters ever until today. ( This now says a lot about me, however, enough is enough.) "READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL". Life of an appliance in the "GOOD OLD DAYS" is when consumers could not afford to just buy a new appliance, because we had to live by what we make and not what we can charge! Supply and demand is what most people do not understand.. (This is going to be a long letter). (Most) people could not afford appliances, yet alone appliance repairs. So they read every detail in the owners manual and followed every step to the T. This is why appliances lasted 90% longer than they do now days. For example, ( Washing clothes in the 70s was once a week). (Washing clothes in the 80s-90s was 2-3 times a week). Washing clothes in the 20th-21st century is 1-3 times a day and more. Why. Why. Why. What has changed. "People" have change. Now, I am no math genus, however I can figure it out that in the past 30-40 + years consumers waste. And waste comes blame. And blame comes..... You guessed it. Me typing this ridiculous letter. Lets face it. Read between the lines and (FOLLOW DIRECTIONS). I am a white male born in the U.S.A. however my experience thru out the years has shown me that when it comes to Washing Machines....Do what the Europeans do and use the water and the detergent to clean your clothes and quite using Sodium hypochlorite. Now were are all those " GO GREEN" Enthusiasts? You want everybody to use less energy. Right? Well the manufactures have met your request, however again the people have ignored it and bought a new unit and now the old one is in the landfill! Need I go on. So, if you are still reading this... Follow the directions on the owners manual, use less Sodium hypochlorite ( Known as bleach). This is mainly for "Wash Machine Users", quite changing clothes like they are going out of style and use the washing machine accordingly & once in awhile (Lets say for the sake of argument...LOL. Add some CLR to your washer..."Follow Directions Again"... ). So we can live with less lawsuits, so that we might be able to save a dollar or two down the road for our children and their children to better their selves and life's they live without learning to blame others!!!!! Done for now, until another comes across my desk. P. S. Please excuse any misspelling or improper grammar. Thank you.

I have a Model WF419AAU/XXA-01 Front Loader and a few weeks ago our FLANGE broke. After viewing hours of videos on this, there is the common thread of how the flange is breaking. Samsung should replace and fix all of our problems. Ours lasted 3 years, just the two of us, and I figured if I put in the new part it will last about the same. The flange is made of cast Aluminum. Which should be good enough. Million dollar question. Do you have a Salt based water softener. The extra Salt in your water can cause the rapid pitting and failure. Same thing happened to me. I am replacing the part tomorrow. and will be changing from salt to Potassium for my water softener. I also will be stopping by a marine store for some Primer designed for aluminum boats to stop the corrosion as well.

    Now I have to go washer shopping, won't be buying a Samsung. This thing should have lasted more than 4 years and the repair should have been much more feasible. Why would I buy a machine that it doesn't make any sense to fix when it breaks? All things break eventually, I get that. However, the repair parts shouldn't be cost prohibitive to buy.

  • @TeachaMantoFish

    Not good news, $1,094 in parts. We only paid $600 for the thing. Labor would have only been about $200. I think they probably knew that the parts cost was going to kill the repair option. If you are talking to "Executive" customer service don't let them talk you into labor, tell them you wants parts covered. This fix required everything from the door seal to the bearing at the back to be replaced. $1,094!!!!! At least I didn't have to pay the visit fee to tell them to pound sand.

    All mfg's are building junk not just Samsung. If you want a well built washer & dryer that comes with a 3 yr warranty & built in USA then buy a Speed Queen. I seldom see complaints for them, always see great consumer reviews especially on Amazon & some on YT. SQ's have no computerized motherboards to break down just old fashioned knobs that always work. Not sold at Home Depot, Lowes, or Best Buy but only at local appliance stores. Check reviews for yourself. Good luck.

It took me about 3 hours to get to the thing. I plan on painting my new flange with waterproof paint to prevent this from happening again. The easy solution would be for them to make this part from stainless steel. I don't know why they don't do that in the first place.

    Thank you for sharing your experience. I have the exact same problem with my Samsung wf218anw/xaa front loader. The flange shaft spider broke at the same location yours did. Luckily, like you, I can repair it myself. Samsung should have recalled these units. Mine is not even 4 yrs. old. Question: Did you replaced just the flange, or the whole drum assembly? Would I recommend a Samsung washer to my worst enemy? Absolutely not?
