Bronte Country
Nothing to do and a week off to do it…I had better take brain out of neutral and remove thumb!
With a car and a camera on my phone plus time and in this country…there’s always something to go look at.
This time it was suggested that Brontë Country might be worth a look, and even on a blowy, misty and raining day…it was not the worst suggestion ever!

The Norfolk Coastal Path is rather more local than others I have tackled of late but whilst its rather more easy a route than some it very much has its own charm. Another treasure in the east of England is St Peters Chapel on the Dengie Peninsula just south of Bradwell, Essex. Built well over a thousand years ago on the site of an abandoned Roman fort, the half mile walk from the nearest car park is only the start of the treat. Saltwater marshland, woods. WW2 defences and quiet beaches make this a great 'off the beaten track' destination!

Takes me back to 1967 when I served at RAF Bawdsey. On summer evenings we would collect driftwood to make a fire on the beach to cook potatoes wrapped in aluminium foil. Took some portable music with us and canned beer in a cooler bag. While they cooked we went skinny dipping off the private beach, one of very few in the UK. The WRAF were even keener than the men and they outnumbered us.

Many thanks for this set of videos. Having walked the walk Sept 22 (I went on an organised walk - guide, luggage transfers and hotels all the way) there are so many memories in them. Summer 23 I might do the reverse walk, E to W - walking my way home as I live within walking distance of St Bees, solo, but still using hotels (although I have already booked The Dales Highway so it might have to wait till 2024). If you're ever in W Cumbria and need a lift, evac., room etc, look me up and message me. ATB. Now on to watch Hadrian's Wall videos - walked that in 21.

Thought you'd made a mistake in the title sequence (Reeth to KS) but .... Anyway, when we walked, the info. we were given would have meant KS to Reeth is at least 22 mile - 11 to Keld and 11 onto Reeth. There must be rainbows there a lot - we got an excellent one, really low between the hills as we got to smelting work ruins on Gunnerside Beck.

The decent off Kidsey Pike can be treacherous, espeically when wet. We turned left before the summit and walked along the ridge, over High Raise - the decent is still steep, but not as bad as KP - added advantage - you don't walk miles along Haweswater. Enjoying the vids Steve

Welcome to Cumbria - sunshine one minute, sleet and snow the next. Don't know if you have ever watched Day Tripper doing the C2C. He set up camp at Black Sail and a storm hit that evening; he ended up spending the night in the toilet of the hostel. Next day walking down to the slate mine, he slipped, ended up cutting his nose on his glasses - looked a right mess. As a solo walker he was lucky it wasn't worse than it was. Right back to the binge watching

  • @richardhunter7363

You were lucky, I walk that cliff (St Bees to Whitehaven) 5 or 6 times a year and never seen a porpoise! Most jealous. Did the C2C Sept 22 and just reliving the experience. Many thanks. BTW, the high route in the Ennerdale valley starts further up the valley, after the lake. The route on the N side of the lake is a little further than the S route you took, but is easy walking, mainly on paths or forest roads.

I can tell the cogs have been whirring, Mr T, and I hope you plans come to fruition! I did notice though, that you made no reference to the fact that physical currency is fast disappearing, and your funds would have to be held by a "middle man" to enable it's use, I refer to your comment about "getting it and disappearing!" I wondered if you had a considered that quick use of physical currency might allow you to provide resources to cater for said changes!? As you rightly said the world is very wierd, and things move so very, very fast now! Excellent vistas, btw!

From a 56 yr old me, 2022 brings my 57th year and I don't like the system/machine, but as you say, we have no choice but to interact with it, and we are being led into an abyss as a whole, sadly, I dread to think what we shall see in the years we have left, also what my children and grand children might see and are subject to worries me even more! This society is now in the throws of "Demolition by Design" the beginning of a new paradigm! Although my journey is different to yours, I will be travelling with you on the journey you share with us! I’m from near Canvey and the 53 flood was due to a similar albeit far larger meteorological effect in that a storm in the North Sea sent a surge that funnelled as the channel narrowed and overcame poorly maintained/constructed/non existent defences. Additionally… “Due to the readjustment of the Earth's crust to displacement by the weight of ice-sheets during the last ice age, the south of the UK is sinking at a rate of approximately 1mm per year in comparison to global mean sea levels, whilst the north is rising at a rate of 1mm per year.” Source UK government The global warming issue remains a spectator sport unless the likes of China and India play ball…
