Lawrence Chewning, a preacher, wrote the original lyrics for "The Anchor Holds". The nurse allowed him to hold his stillborn child in his hands. During his grieveing process, he went home and wrote the full lyrics, of the song which was over 10 minutes long. He asked Ray Boltz if he wanted the song. Ray accepted but had to cut it down in length to make it acceptible to the media. Brother Chewning's journey, including holding his stillborn son in his hands, comes out in the song, Or should we say that the song comes out of his journey?
