    I'm a little over halfway through Red Winter and really enjoying it! It took about 10 chapters to get fully into it, and it helps that the two books I read before it were pretty big disappointments. I have "Sandwich" by Catherine Newman on my tbr which is another Cape Cod family drama, I'm going in expecting it to be trash but Im a volenteer test subject for another booktuber. The two "new gothic" books I liked this year were "Other Birds" by Sarah Addison Allen (it's really good but perhaps a little summery for fall) "The Last Tale of The Flower Bride" by Roshani Chokshi (I liked it but it is very slow and confusing) "The Thirteenth Tale" bianca Amato is one everyone but me likes

    I've read nearly everything Shirley Jackson wrote, I remember reading the lottery the first time in 6th grade not College lol. Haunting of Hill House is good and shouldn't be to scary! "We have always lived in the castle" is my favorite but definitely strange and off-putting to some people. The only one I actively dislike by Shirley Jackson was "the sundial", which not only I hated the book but ended up being my last buddy read with a booktuber who passed away in June 😢. I have three pre orders this month Swordcrossed by Freya Marske The Waiting hy Michael Connelly Fury of the Gods by John Gwynne And Red Winter is next on my tbr! I won't make any promises but I might reread The Haunting of Hill House if I'm in the mood.

      I was homeschooled up until my senior year and since I was picking the books I definitely wasn’t reading The Lottery in 6th grade 😅 I’m sorry to hear about the booktuber passing and your dislike of The Sundial. I read the description and it does sound awful. I hope you like Red Winter but let me know even if you hate it. No worries about rereading and I will give you a spoiler and tell you definitely don’t waste your time reading Melody! Ugh but full review will be up soon.

    Yes book 1 is the weakest, my first time through they got better as they went and my second time through book 2 was best and three was a high middle. There are many things you have questions about that are answered, and some things that dont quite fit that I give a pass to bc it's YA. I like the simplistic episodic structure that resembles a video game or tabletop rpg. It's funny you didn't mention Reika at all she's my fav character but I did realise that later in the series Reika is why. Just bought Red Winter! I'll make it my 144th book of the year, I've been trying to find something special for my 12th dozen book of the year! I have always pronounced Kitsune keet-sue-nay like they do in the audiobook but I don't know what version is more xorrect I read a ton of fox spirit books this month, "The Fox Wife" by Yangsze Choo was about a Huli Jing which is a Chinesr Fox spirit, "Nine Tailed" by Jayci Lee which is about a Gumiho which is a Korean Fox Spirit that are the ones that pretty much always have nine tails. Theres a childrens book called Fox Tales that is about a Kitsune that is about her earning all 9 of her tails that I'm interested in. I read Talon by Julie Kagawa and it was awful, dont hesitate to tear into stuff, I don't put authors books on pedestals. Also no need to rush if I gift you something, I've given books ppl still havn't read three years later and I'm ok with that. Ive even got a booktuber a Kobo that I only know for sure she's used once and I'm not salty about that either for context.

Glad it was just TH-cam randomly hiding stuff 🙄 I think I forgot about Reika because she comes in at the end of the book and I didn’t have a strong impression of her or what she was all about. I hope you enjoy Red Winter I will say the third book isn’t exactly “clean” and the romance level increases with each book. I was excited for this book so it worked out that I was able to listen to it quickly and do my review but I didn’t feel rushed just glad it worked out. I of course appreciate you sending it to me 😊

    Lately I have stuck to Manga for reading as I was lucky enough to have been born and raised in the Philippines, Nippon (Japan), and Okinawa while Okinawa was still a US Territory. Yeah, I'm old. While I was there, I learned Samurai means "Sworn One." To say as most westerners do is a little incorrect as the actual term is "Senshi Samurai" meaning "Warrior who has taken an oath." As for Manga, I've been rereading some old favorites as I have moved and I'm still trying to find a good bookstore.

    The trick to pronouncing Japanese written words is that a British Diplomat asked people who spoke German to convert Japanese to the European alphabet. Also, and I have to practice this all the time, English is about the only language that always stresses the first syllable. There are sources that explain how the Germans use their script, but as a bit of a start, if the letter "H" is the first letter in a word, it is silent, and if there are two vowels, it is the second vowel that is elongated.

    I read a similar but way better book like The Sky in the Deep! It was The Weaver and the Witch Queen by Geneva Gornichec, it has no wierd s** scenes, or 17 yo girls winning sword fights with grown men, and only one less graphic animal sacrifice. I liked it the most out of the book club but no one disliked it. I gave both 5☆ but I did like her other book better called The Witch's Heart. The only time someone censoring their own book was wierd to me was an adult gluing the spicy pages of their own book together so they wouldn't be tempted to read them.

I just started a book that supposed to be about elves more in like the Tolkien style of writing 🤞🏻hopefully it’s good.

    Hello, August is Booktuber appreciation month for me. To show my appreciation for this channel I'll be starting The Magical Beings Rehabilitation Center by KM Shea today! (Decided before I knew you were uploading so fun coincidence). I got suggestions from active channels, so if you have any recs I'm still taking submissions. I LO♡E White Fang and really like Call of the Wild! I rec reading CotW first, they are very good but contain a lot of animal abuse, it is worth it but they are upsetting. Godzilla Minus One is fantastic! They just made the bluray available for preorder but it's a total ripoff, it has no subs no dub and no black and white version. And its thirty bucks. The novelization of Godzilla x Kong is much better than the movie (which is fine like the rest of the monsterverse ones). MiniKong works quite well esoecially well in the book. I read and liked The Secret Garden this year, the other childrens classic I really liked was Heidi by Johanna Spyri.

    I've just finished it and thought it was great. Looking forward to continuing with the rest of the series. I thought there was plenty of foreshadowing of the growing attraction between Ross and Demelza, so the way that played out didn't bother me. I liked the sections around country life and mining, it was a fascinating insight into the life of the time. The book was pretty episodic, and the episodes were melodramatic, but I thought that added to the fun. It was interesting that it was written just after the Second World War when soldiers were returning home from war, just like Ross at the start. I wonder if that helped contribute to its popularity at the time. But it's been popular ever since, and now that I've read it I can see why.

    I've had a pretty bad month constantly fighting a slump. -The Secret Garden by Fraces Hodgson Burnett was a good quick classic that I enjoyed. -One Dark Window by Rachel Gillig is a very popular romantasy that most ppl are liking but it put me back in a slump midmonth. I'm currently reading The Seven Year Slip by Ashley Poston and it's going very well! Just finished A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L Jensen. It was like a better version of The Sky in the Deep, it still wasn't great and it's not clean and there was an animal sacrifice scene. I agree with all you said, i could argue that things were doomed as soon as Ralph chose to call Piggy Piggy (he never gets a real name) that shows that even the best of them will hurt someone for amusement. One thing I noticed this time was how ridiculously fast they come to the conclusion that no adults are there. It's super disturbing so I can't rec it but The Girl Next Door by Jack Ketchum has similar themes but it's way deeper and way darker. I did skim the last half of Sky inthe Deep (from chapter 24 onwards) and sacrifices are mentioned once but no detail is given.

      @gwendolynransom68 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That makes sense! Poor piggy doesn’t even get a name but I suppose that’s part of the point. I was surprised by that too and could only assume they only had one adult(the pilot) with them? But that seems unlikely. Thanks for letting me know about Sky in the deep I am trying to finish it today.

    I agree about your sentiments. With Lord of the flies. It's kind of a crap book. I can't decide if it's stupid or if it's super big brain psychology. I also agree that the sense of impending bad problems from the beginning are very present. I remember reading this book in high school and feeling horrified. I didn't know who was crazier someone who would take the time to write a book like this or that somebody in the school system thought this would be good for children to read. But again, is it a good book? Yes is it enjoyable? No, not really lol

    I read Ararat by Christopher Golden, it wasn't very good and wasn't even a monster book. Salvation Day by Kali Wallace was another dissapointeing sci-fi horror, both of them could have gone in cool directions but didn't. Mistress Anne by Temple Bailey was a great forgotten classic with Middlemarch and Tenent of Wildfell Hall vibes. Currenty reading The Witch's Heart by Genevieve Gornichec, it's a Norse myth retelling from Loki's wife's perspective which I'm really enjoying! There is a sequel called The Andromeda Evolution, but I haven't read it bc it came out years after MC died and it was mostly written by his son. Gravity by Tess Garretson may work a little better for you, it takes place on the International Space Station, where they take a sample from the bottom of tje ocean to space and it does unpredictable things. (And it has women) Fun fact they cast a woman in a big role in the Andromeda Strain movie and the manbabies freaked out. Under a pen name Crichton wrote a nonfiction about an ebola outbreak called Hot Zone, it showed how broken the systems are mostly bc ppl try to push blame away and steal credit for good things. I'm currently reading Mistress Anne by Temple Bailey, its a forgotten classic from 1917 and I'm really enjoying it! My first sci-fi of the year didnt go well, I tried Salvation Day by Kali Wallace it got 2.5☆.

    Yeah. I don’t really “get” the love for Shirley Jackson. 🤷🏻‍♀️Maybe I just don’t love psychological stories. (unpopular opinion: I HATED My Cousin Rachel by Du Mauier because of this! The priest and the stepmother were the only characters I found interesting to be honest. The main character was just the typical boring "chosen one". I also found the writing to be a little bland, there was too much telling and not showing. Some of the decisions the characters made also didn't make ANY sense. Like something super dramatic and traumatizing would happen and they would have NO reaction at all. The ending felt super rushed as well. The conflict between religion and folklore was very interesting tho, which is why I loved the priest and the stepmother. I only wish they would have developed the stepmother's story a little more, she had so much potential. Mixed feelings about this book but I hope the second one is better.
