Hardware Hacking Simplified? The tiny UNIX server inside a cheap webcam from Amazon!
I worked at SGI for a number of years. At the end, I was involved in the Itanium side of things, especially working with the Pro64 compiler team and Intel as they tried to get that compiler to generate fast IA64 code. It was humorous in some of the meetings with Intel as the MIPS compiler guys tried to get some instruction timing information out of Intel. That compiler was built for the MIPS RISC architecture where instructions had well known and fixed timings. Intel just never quite "got" the basic idea of RISC. There were many instructions that had variable timings, although Intel said they were "deterministic", such as taking 6, 8 or 10 clock cycles depending on specific conditions. This drove the compiler guys crazy as they basically had to assume the worst case execution times for everything which meant the generated code couldn't take advantage of the internal pipeline in the Itanium chip. This all was around 2000/1 and I figured that the IA64 line would either take off big or crash and burn, like it eventually did. I had survived 5 rounds of layoffs before the IA64 project and eventually got picked in the 6th round. With the severance package, I ended up starting my own business the day after getting the pink slip and have been doing that since, will be retiring at the end of the year.
IA64 was either the worst thing Intel ever did because it ended p being such a absolute flop commercially, or the best thing they ever did because they buried nearly all of their server-space competitors with it. Glad to hear you did well after it and great story about the compiler!
@@wltechblog I used to enjoy John Mashey's technical talks about CPUs. His favorite analogy was to compare them to a vehicle engines. You could have a sports car with a 400HP engine (PC w/ Intel CPU) or you could have an 18-wheeler with a 400HP engine (workstation or server w/ MIPS CPU). Sure, that sports car could out accelerate the big rig on a drag strip. But try to get that sports car to do some real work, like towing 40 tons up a long mountain pass, and it can't.
Tried this today on my Neos camera, I now have a white plastic brick.
Jump on our Discord channel, we'll get you sorted out! One of the great features of the Ingenic platform is they are virtually impossible to actually break.
i left neos behind but i was quite lucky as I did beta testing for them and got a tonne of water/door/motion sensors i moved them onto defang but switch out to yi cams
They're certainly not top of the line cameras but they hold up pretty well given their age. With real firmware they can be quite practical! And having open source firmware is a must.
Great video - thanks. I tried a couple of other older methods before finding this video and the combination of those and that setup button being very difficult to hold down whilst inserting the power cable, I think I have bricked my two cameras. I have the USB A - A cable coming later this week, but I cant find how to engage with you on Discord. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks
Hi! just join the discord using the link in the video description, as a new user you will enter the welcome room, give us a quick introduction and you get full access! We can always get these cams going again if you're not afraid to use a screwdriver!
Hi There, just a quick one. Thank for the vid. I managed to install new firmware, all is working but only if I'm connected to the same wifi. I can't connect from cellular or home wifi. Is there any trick how to connect remotely? Cheers
Hello, generally the advice is to use a VPN to get access to your home network from external networks. We do have Wireguard built into the camera, and I'm hoping we will be able to fit ZeroTier on them soon for allowing direct VPN connections to the cameras themselves. Some NVR software provides mechanisms for external access as well.
@@wltechblog Thank you.

These cams don't hard brick, we can always bring it back over USB! There are several methods of doing the install so its quite possible to get varying advice, but the Discord channel is the place to go!
Looks like I screwed up my v2 camera. i let go of reset button before it turn blue. camera did speak yellow led , then click led goes out and nothing.
all good. redid SD because bin name was changed. bin.old would load
So you're all good to go? If not jump on Discord and we'll help you out!
Do you need a Windows PC to do this? A Chromebook won't work?
how far did you get? I downloaded all files and firmware but I got an extra file uboot bin.
Provided nothing goes wrong, a chromebook would be just fine. The process is pretty reliable but we do have a few people every day where something didn't work for one reason or another, at that point you would need a PC or Linux system.
The uboot file is new but required!
Can you do a video on how to install Thingino on a Wyze doorbell?
I will!
followed steps above when the reset button is pressed and held and neos cam plugged back in it stays orange and just says ready to connect like it used to do . Any Ideas ?
That prompt is from the factory Wyze firmware so it doesn't like something about the SD card.
I have done all the as card stuff waited 6.5 minutes and now can see the cam on my WiFi networks, but it says (no internet connection) so can’t access anything
try to open thingino.local in your browser when its connected to the thingino network
Wyse cam OG and V4, can this do onvif?
Those devices are not supported, Wyze has crippled their ability to run third party firmware.
I have added a file uboot.bin on the SD card. It is ok?
yes it is new but required! I am updatig the installer fairly often as I find ways to improve its reliability!
The thing with Neos is that the company was bought out - rumoured to be by Sky - for its tech. It may or may not be a coincidence that Sky in the last year released their own home security and camera systems.
I understand that supporting old devices can be a burden but these SmartCams are quite old devices in this sphere and I don't believe they've even had a firmware update for a very long time... i feel bad for their customers, the upside is there are a lot of new Thingino users joining right now!
Man, you're killing it with these cameras and it makes me so happy. About 18 months ago I went looking for cameras powered by open source firmware and couldn't find any legit firmware...searched today and WOW, more cameras with open source firmware than I know what to do with. Time to read up and then go shopping. BTW, where can I make a donation?
The only donations we take is hardware, if you happen to discover an Ingenic powered camera that should be supportable but that we don't yet have. If you're looking for a great indoor camera, I just saw Amazon has the wuuk on a great black friday sale.. I'd really call this our flagship device. it's showing $20.70 for me. amzn.to/4fRSNgp

if you need to be able to revert you'll need to take a backup with a flash programmer or using the Cloner software. Jump in our Discord for help with those if you need it!

I am trying this, but I didn't get it speaking to me saying initialising first boot.
If you didn't hear it, it doesn't like something about your sd card. Make sure it is fat32!
Great video I followed all the instruction's every thing tallied with your vid however my camera is a Neso, I put the micro card in the camera hold down the reset button plug in the power, light goes to amber for a few seconds then turns blue when I release the button I hear click but then it start to flash amber none stop! I've tried this a few time now am I missing something?

Apologies for duplicate post, but I unintentionally posted this on another of your videos. Tried this on one of my four NEOS NS-CAM-02 but it gets stuck during the process with the amber and blue light alternately flashing which is suggestimg it is trying to connect. There is no additional new Wifi showing up on my phone (Android). I've tried all three binaries together and separately with the same results. I've attempted to logon to Discord but end up going round and round in circles proving I am human and then entering my phone number for verification and then I have to prove I'm human again and, after that, I'm back to my phone number again which, apparently is invalid - tried with and without the leading zero after the +44 UK code! Any suggestions welcomed before I give up and start trying alternative cameras. I appreciate your efforts.
Does it have to be done with a SD card or can it be done using the USB A input eg a flash drive?
You cannot use a flash drive unfortunately.
@@wltechblog Thanks, yeah I figured that out already, still to do with a card, I know I have one but where lol

Interest in further analysis of the gpio pins and how it is captured into Thingino. I liked how quickly you were able to capture and then hack/understand the firmware.
It helps that I've done it on several other cameras before, and even though this is a new architecture the layout is similar enough!
what will be the username.saying username and password wrong when I tried to login to ip address
The username for webui is root, the password is whatever you entered. If you need to do a factory reset, hold down the button for 15 seconds and it will wipe and go back to the config portal!
What andoid or pc software do we need to use for this software
Anything that supports RTSP streaming or ONVIF camera control.. Popular choices are Frigate or Scrypted for pc, on Android a good free option is Tinycam Pro.
Nice update man!
Anybody know how to re flash. I've now got 3 useless cameras :-( I've got one that pops up in the wireless list but no way to connect it. Has anybody got a fools guide to edit the config files
Your best shot for support is to jump on our Discord, the link is in the video description. The whole team is in there, we'll get you sorted out!
Impressive to achieve so much in less than 2 hours in real time while simultaneously doing a live video and responding to questions.
For sure doing it live is a challenge, but making mistakes and having to fix them is all part of the game! Thanks!
My Neos SmartCam 2 doesn't go blue. Followed all instructions. Used a MicroSD card SanDisk extreme 128gb formated to fat32
Almost certainly 128gb is larger than the cam can handle in its factory bootloader. Try to find a card 32GB or smaller, make sure it uses MBR partition scheme, and of course fat32 filesystem!
I got to this point, 7:22, but then failure! Filling the information on the thingino page seemed to go OK with green ticks everywhere. But I cant see the camera listed on my server and a quick press of the reset button on the camera makes the doorbell noise but then stays silent rather than giving the IP address. I tried to redo the process from the start, but I'm guessing the changes made prevent that? Any advice? (Apologies, I'm not on discord.)
You can do a factory reset on the cam by holding the button for 15 seconds. it will wipe all its config and reboot, and the config portal will appear again. Make sure that you put in the wifi info for a 2.4ghz network, and both ssid and password are case sensitive.
@@wltechblog Thanks for the speedy response. I thought I had picked the 2.4ghz option and been careful with case selection and typos, but clearly not. I wasn't sure how to get back to the thingino portal, but the reset advice sorted me and it now works. Thanks again.
Thabk you so much for this tuturial, I managed to see the Thinino network on my mobile & connect to it but don't get the thingino webpage you showed to enter my WiFi name & password how do I get the page please? at the mo showing no internet connection - Also I have the u-boot-t20x.bin missing on my SSD card after unzipping where can I find it please? Many thanks
If you're not automatically directed ot the login page, you should be able to reach it by opening a browser and going to thingino.local
Why would my 32gb micro SD card say it needs an extra 81.3mb to fit the files onto the card ??
Also I’ve formatted a 128gb micro sd to Fat32 and all files loaded when sticking into the camera and holding the button it dosent go blue.. well it flashes blue for a micro second but if I continue to hold it says ready to connect
I wouldn't expect a 128gb card to work. These cams are using old tech, 32gb is probably the limit and I know some 32gb cards won't work. As far as your previous question about fitting on a 32gb card, not sure whats happening there but the installer and image fits in under 128 megabytes.
I am supporting GNU/linux on mips32 and mips4. From SGI ip30 (mips4 64bit) to Atheros SOCs (mips32r2 32bit).
We're pretty sad that Ingenic T series doesn't exist in mainline linux, we have some efforts to bringing it forward with some progress in a few areas... but these cams are all running 3.10.14.
@wltechblog Igenic was problematic. Their contribution was partial, the GPU was closed.
The T series doesn't have a gpu but it does have a bunch of other blocks for camera and video functions... But even simple stuff like their UART is wacko
I have one of the first r2k dev board. It runs at 12.5Mhz, 8Mbyte of ram, socket rom.
I started flashing the cam over20 mins ago and it's still not showing on the wifi list....any ideas???
your best bet for support is to jump on our discord channel and get live help from the team!
Hi, great video and thanks for creating it.?I have two Neos smart cams and I would really like to continue to use them once the Neos application is shut down. I have been a subscriber to the Neos cloud based system for a few years. I have tried to use your instructions to make the cameras work on the thingino platform ( if that’s the correct term?). I started by creating a GitHub account but that’s were I realised that I am way out of my knowledge base. I’m a retired builder and my IT understanding is very limited. I’m not even sure that I’ve created an account fully, as it’s started requesting me to create a “repository “ “public or private elements etc… I’m hoping that I could just download the necessary files onto an sd card and install them in the cameras but maybe it needs more knowledge of computers, as I said I’m pretty illiterate about computers. Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks Martin
Hi! You don't need to create a github account in order to get the required files. Go to this link for the Wyze V2: github.com/wltechblog/thingino-installers/blob/main/wyze-cam-2/wyze-cam-2.zip then look on the right there will be a download icon. Once you have that saved, you can unzip the file and put the contents on the SD card.
Hey there! Github can be a bit overwhelming for people without experience working with it, so don't worry about it! You don't actually need a github account in order to download the files. Just go to the address provided and you will see a green button which says '<> code'. If you click on it you will get an option that says 'download ZIP' and that will give you the file which you can then open and find inside of it all the files you see in this video. Hope this helps, good luck!
@ thanks very much!!
Will thingino restore ability to view the cameras from my phone like the neos app?
if your phone is connected to your home wifi, you can view directly using an app like tinycam pro. If you want to view remotely, you'll need an NVR that provides that functionality. I'll have videos in the future about integration.
Thanks anyway, nice try!
Don't worry I'll have another victim.. i mean patient.. soon!
Thanks for your effort. I guess it is too much to hope that retailer or manufacturers will give basic information on the products they sell. Of course, it can be even worse. I've purchased multiple cams on Aliexpress that don't even have branding. You can buy one cam, spend months hacking it but to what end? Whether you have success or not, the effective knowledge base has not changed.
For sure these vendors do not want to advertise their components and really really don't want you to buy their products to flash with Thingino! Their business model relies on people buying their cams at a low price and then spending $$$ every month on cloud subscriptions. We can of course buy camera modules from Aliexpress, we have quite a few supported already, but that's not as easy a sell for users as a complete product... I do have one of those modules and enough parts to build my own PTZ camera, once my 3d printer starts cooperating...
Thank you for all the info and instructions! Neos are shutting down at the end of November, so I'm sure this video will get even more views soon. I liked and Subbed. Also - You remind me of Billy Bob Thornton a bit, in a good way. Cheers
I had never heard of NEOS before hearing about their demise! And lots of folks joining our Discord convert their NEOS and go on to buy other Thingino compatible cams with more capabiliies!
@@wltechblogthey weren't the the best but we're cheap and did the job at the time. I'm looking forward to trying this hack. Cheers

I'm already confused before I start, as I don't know which App to run once I've flashed it and Thingio is on the NEO Cam? I couldn't find a Thingio app so not sure what the deal is. I'm sure my questions will be answered as I follow the steps and play about. Will see how I go. Thanks
Great video! Will this work with the tinycam monitor app ?
Yes it does, that's a good starting point for android users!
Iv downloaded the files for neos smart cam2 a few clicks and after 10 minutes the LED on the camera is Flashing blue and yellow but no WiFi produced.
just got my V2 flashed and it went smoothly! I'll do one of my V3s next!
The LED never goes blue, I have reformatted and re-installed the files on the Micro SD card a couple of times?
We're you in discord earlier? A user with the same problem was, he is getting a different SD card to test with.
