มุมมอง 2.4K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Come learn about the first ballistic missile submarine - the USS George Washington (SSBN-598). The sail from the George Washington is located here at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut. George Washington successfully launched the first ballistic missile from a submarine - paving the way for the submarine role in our nation's Strategic Deterrence policy!

MK 14 Torpedo - Operational Issues
มุมมอง 8K3 ปีที่แล้ว
On our last spotlight of the MK-14 torpedo we look at the operational issues the Submarine Force faced during WWII. These range from running too deep, detonating too early, failing to detonate, and even circling around and taking the it's own submarine!
MK 14 torpedo - Design & Production Problems
มุมมอง 1.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Come join us as we discuss the design and production problems with the MK-14 torpedo. This torpedo has the dubious honor of being both an incredible success and an incredible failure! At 5:41 seconds World War One was miss-spoken. Should have been World War Two "
MK 14 torpedo
มุมมอง 2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
In this spotlight we look at the MK-14 torpedo. The primary torpedo of WWII. It had a combustion engine that used fuel, air... and water!
Whitehead MK 3 Torpedo
มุมมอง 8813 ปีที่แล้ว
Come learn about the Whitehead MK-3 Torpedo. Invented by John and Robert Whitehead and one of 100 sold to the U.S. Navy for use in WWI. This torpedo was revolutionary in that it was the first torpedo to use a gyroscope to maintain the torpedo's course (not homing - just maintain a set path).
Japanese mini-sub HA 8
มุมมอง 3.7K3 ปีที่แล้ว
As we pause to remember the attack on Pearl Harbor, we look closer at one of the vessels of that attack. The Japanese Midget Submarine “A” Class. This one, the HA-8 was not involved in the attack on Pearl Harbor, but 5 of her sister submarines were. Join us as we look further into this vessel and the role she played on the date that shall live in infamy.
20 mm Autocannon
มุมมอง 2.5K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Come learn about the 20 mm autocannon! This was carried on U.S. submarines during WWII. It could be used for anti-aircraft defense as well as small boat attack. It fired an explosive 20mm round and submarines had at least one, if not two, of these!
Submarine hull design progression
มุมมอง 11K3 ปีที่แล้ว
"Submarines have gone from harbor defense to world wide power projection, but it wasn't overnight! Come join us as we discuss how submarine hull design has changed over the past 120 years. From gasoline engines with a 53' 10"" length hull to nuclear power and a 560' length hull. Note - when talking about the Los Angeles class - "surfacing through" refers to "surfacing through ice."

The Walther U-Boats (hydrogen peroxide fuel) had problems with the fuel spontaneously igniting. The British got one of the boats after the war, and named her HMS Explorer, but her crew gave her the more accurate name, HMS Exploder. Given the wartime conditions, it is unlikely the Germans could have produced the quality fuel and equipment needed to prevent this from happening.

The head is much simpler to operate than on a 1920's S-boat. Look up the bookl "Pigboat 39" about S-39 at the start of WWII. It includes a picture and the 13 steps to use the head.

As a Caretaker of the Nautilus back in the mid 1990s. We replaced many a plank of Topside with pressure treated wood. Not Teak because it wasn't available. Did they finally replace with Teak Decking afterwards? Also do you still have the "Swan Family" hanging around. BTW that's the First time I've ever seen the OIC actually go into the superstructure. To those Assigned and the Repair Shops at the Naval Base. Keep up the great work keeping LOLA spiffy. God Bless Submariners.

Lots of the large pipes looks a lot like main induction system for fresh air to the boats ventilation systems and for the boats diesel genset. The smaller pipes are the vent risers from the ballast tanks, these let the air out to dive. I also see parts of the low pressure blow system connected to the vent risers. I doubt if any of these were added after the boat was decommed. This isn't that much different than a diesel boat.

The depth control sensor being placed on the cone (near the propeller) would cause Bernoulli effect to alter the sensed pressure, the faster you go the lower the perceived pressure, same principle that makes a carburetor to work. This is common knowledge among engineers, which causes me to wonder regarding the training of the designers. Plus the churning of the prop, would cause additional alterations in the perceived pressure because of its effect on the water flow in the immediate area. This error cannot be detected without the torpedo moving. Which means you won't know it isn't working without test firing.
