That's 10 mins away, it's sad I've never seen it. Ashamed of that as one Gramps was Navy, lucky and wasn't deployed, other was AAC B17 MSgt, Africa/Italy/Europe
The "typewriters" have keyboards that look like those from teletypes. Were they Naval teletypes or soemthing else?
delete this.
Another reason for the crank that fits on valves might be the additional torque from the crank as opposed to the small valve wheels
I note the essential detail of coffee cups in cupholders! Nice touch.
The pre-Selectric IBM typerwriters look like early 60's, but I'm not sure. At least no punched cards.
Especially in the ESM part, the equipment looks newer than mid-50's or even early 60's. I would assume that it gets updated, so that is reasonable.
Picking up shrimp - years ago, I read about a sub that heard shrimp, opened the outer torpedo doors, then closed them, and had a lot of shrimp meals (after the pharmacists' mate tested the shrimp for safety)
Today, there are thousands of satellites - mostly it seems, owned by SpaceX (Starlink). Capitalism wins.
I like the comment about supply and logistics. It has been said that amateurs argue strategy and tactics; professionals argue about logistics. The first Gulf War was won not just by tanks but by logistics to supply those tanks as they quickly moved.

Great line" Diesel boats were essentially surface ships with the ability to submerge more than once.
The Walther U-Boats (hydrogen peroxide fuel) had problems with the fuel spontaneously igniting. The British got one of the boats after the war, and named her HMS Explorer, but her crew gave her the more accurate name, HMS Exploder. Given the wartime conditions, it is unlikely the Germans could have produced the quality fuel and equipment needed to prevent this from happening.
The head is much simpler to operate than on a 1920's S-boat. Look up the bookl "Pigboat 39" about S-39 at the start of WWII. It includes a picture and the 13 steps to use the head.
USN secretary Forrestal gave Fluckey the Medal of Honor because FDR was too sick.
Said “excuse me” to the chef mannequin in the galley. lol so polite 😂
It's just unbelievable that some people can even bear the thought of living and sleeping in such extremely cramped rooms.. Like a herring in a can.. Unbelievable - must be people with very special abilities. Anyone else would have fainted from claustrophobia!
This series has been great. Thank you! 🤓
As a Caretaker of the Nautilus back in the mid 1990s. We replaced many a plank of Topside with pressure treated wood. Not Teak because it wasn't available. Did they finally replace with Teak Decking afterwards? Also do you still have the "Swan Family" hanging around. BTW that's the First time I've ever seen the OIC actually go into the superstructure. To those Assigned and the Repair Shops at the Naval Base. Keep up the great work keeping LOLA spiffy. God Bless Submariners.
Turn down the music track.
Capt. Street was the Department Head of the NJROTC unit at our high school. He was a true gentleman and role model.
Came here from the Silent Service old TV show about the Barb: th-cam.com/video/ywf8iwmCyMQ/w-d-xo.html
Ocean as a treadmill, excellent analogy!
I was on the Tirante SS420 during the Cuban crisis in key west
In another firm the Commander called the doors between the compartments as hatches. Hatches go between decks the doors between the compartment are water tight doors not hatches..you would think a commander would know that
The recently found the wreck of the U.S. HARDER (SS-257).
Captain Street was my NJROTC commander at Woburn Senior High School back in the early 70's. He was a great man.........
Hollywood script material -- Gripping account -- This report will inspire the young and reinforce the sense of purpose of modern submariners.

I would be interested in anything about the lagarto
My father was a sonarman on the Nautilus when it went to Antarctica. I would love to get some record or information about his time on the Nautilus. Anything would be great.
The sinking of the freighter was where we ended up getting part of the sail from the Abraham Lincoln.
Are you the new coach for the Colorado Grit hockey team? I got to the boat in 1982 when the boat was in Hawaii. One month before I got there, they tell me that the sail was on the pier with a Rising Sun painted on the side. I found that kind of cool when I got to the boat. I think it was about a month later (could be wrong on timing) we went up and off load at Bangor and got concrete slugs. Then we transferred to Roton Groton where several months later we did a UNITAS.
I was on the last missile patrol and when it sank the Japanese freighter Nisha Maru.
Just came across the channel watching the Mark 14 torpedo and I’ve found many more excellent videos!
After standing watch, doing your regular job, and several collateral duties, one is too damn tired to worry about my bunk. I never had any trouble sleeping in the sub's CPO bunk room, except maybe when the skipper was doing angles and dangles. CWO4 USN Ret.
Wow! Much respect to you fellas
This is the steel submariners are made of.
Fluckey was no flunkey!
you made a mistake. Submarines are called boats not ships.
I'm just trying to annoy the neighbor who decided I should be awake at 3am, where's the boom?
So the drink called pink lady is courtesy of Torpedmen
Go navy
Very interesting. Thank you.
I’ve toured this boat. I miss my submarine days. Best described as the best miserable time of my life. 😂 Receiving my dolphins is one of my fondest achievements.
IIRC mk14 torpedoes were kept in the inventory into the 1970’s. My sub carried them in 1976
The BIG problem with the mk14 refusing to admit it was untested and defective. Then refusing to fix the problems in any timely manner
Thank You
Excellent show
