How Has a 15-year-old Mosaic Garden Orb Aged? #mosaicart #grouting #yardart
I made a big mosaic orb about 15! years ago and recently decided to assess the wear and tear after being outside in all kinds of elements for so long. Nothing really surprised me about the specific wear and tear issues: lots of soft-body ceramic tiles chipped, and a few "alternative" types of tessera have faded (dyed agate and Jasper).
I can't remember what color grout I used initially ... it's been so long! But, the bottom of the ball gives a hint: grey! Well, I hated it, and immediately colorwashed the grout even though I knew that best practices demand I use a "proper" penetrating grout sealer (like 511 Impregnator).
Which gives me thought: how bad is it REALLY to colorwash outdoor/exterior mosaics? If this ball shows that even after 15 years, the original colorwash paint is STILL there, and is STILL repelling moisture (see parts of the vid where you can see that the original colorwash repelled some of the new black colorwash!), then .... ?
Back when I made this, I was deeply in love w/Eddie Vedder's Into The Wild soundtrack, and titled this piece, Big Hot World.

Grout Refresh on Old Stepping Stones #grout #diypatio #steppingstones

FAQ: Will the color fade? Yes, eventually the paint color will fade. At that time, you can either re-do your colorwash, or give the grout another application of a penetrating grout sealer like 511 Impregnator. What grout is this? Most of the time, I used polymer-fortified sanded grout brand: Custom. This type of grout is perfect for this colorwash technique. Some of them have Mapei Flexcolor, w...

I love this! can you mosiac over gold flake? Will it stick or pop off?
Thanks! Will the g flake pop off? Nope. But, you might try a test first to make sure the chemicals in the Lexel (or whatever adhesive you're using) don't turn the gold a different color. :)
@@SusanCrocenzi great idea! thank you!
@@barbarapierson9980 You bet! Have fun!
perhaps research the definition of tempered glass. that was 1/8" DSB 🤣cool tho

Where do you get your tempered glass?
I hit up local glass shops for cast-off pieces of TG. The smaller mom/pop shops are the best to try this. Offer them some money for their unusable pieces! I also find pieces at Habitat for Humanity Resale stores. My last option is buying it new from IKEA or other places that carry glass shelves.
Thank you for the lessons learned! I am just starting my mosaic journey, enjoying it! I have so much stained glass scraps and broken crockery awaiting a new life.
You are so welcome! I was hoping this info would be helpful to newbies (and others)! Thanks for the feedback! Have fun on your journey to becoming a mosaic nerd! :)
Susan, you are so funny. I love the sound effects! Wooohh!!
HA!! I had fun with fonts and sounds with this one! I was just talking with a Trader Joe’s worker about the lack of silliness in the world! lol! Long live goofballery!! Thanks for noticing!
Just realized you’re Eve! Do you want subscribers? I’ll subscribe but you won’t know it’s me.
could you add the 511 after the color application is dry?
I have never tried that, Carol. I doubt it would work, since the grout gets pretty saturated w/ the paint and probably won't suck any additional stuff up. The other thing that may happen is the 511 might change the paint (erode it, react in some negative way w/the paint). I kinda feel that it's an either/or situation. Either use the proper sealant (511) or throw caution to the wind and use the colorwash technique.
@@SusanCrocenzi thanks, that makes sense.

Awesome. So anxious to get started on mine.

That’s a great idea. I’ve always wanted to try doing tempered glass. Thank you so much. Some videos people use contact paper before breaking to keep the glass in its same shape so you don’t have to re-piece it together. Do you find that that’s easier? I love your artwork too thanks for the videos❤
@@KC-fd3lt Thanks! 😊 I’ve never used contact paper, so not able to advise. So, they’re picking the glass up via the contact paper… and then what do they do?
Thank you for sharing your process! I am a new subscriber, loving the channel so far! Unfortunately I can't find Lexel in Europe, where I live, would you mind sharing an alternative to that clear glue?
Hi, and thanks for your feedback!! Since I don't really know about adhesives in Europe, I'd just suggest you find a thick clear adhesive. If you're making a piece for outdoors, find one that is waterproof. Some name brands in the US are: GE Silicone 2, Lexel, Loctite Clear, I think Gorilla Glue makes a clear adhesive ... Hope this helps!
Thanks a ton Susan! xoxo

Hey there, Miss Susan!!! Never even thought about re-grouting or re-sealing. Thanks for the demo.
@@donnajosephsonblatz5058 Hi Ms. Donna! Go for it! Thanks for watching!
Love, love, love! Great refresh. Simple and well demonstrated. Thanks. Question - are you going to reseal the stepping stones? Or did i miss something?
Thanks!! This colorwash takes the place of a penetrating grout sealer like 511 Impregnator. I could have just re-applied the 511, but it doesn't change the color of grout. Best practice is to use the "proper" sealer, but I'm perfectly fine with opting for a more "decorative" finish. PS: the paint will probably fade after awhile, depending on how much sun it gets. At that point, I can either put more colorwash on it, or re-apply the 511 penetrating sealer. Hope that makes sense!
I saw those circles thingies at Michael's a week or two ago and actually thought of your work. 😊 What would you use those tempered glass cutting boards for? A GOG piece or to break?
HA! That triple roundie was what caught my attention! I let my Floating O students know that it was available if they want to make a cheaper/easier indoor Floating O! I'm not a GOG gal in general, so no, I would smash it to pieces :-) and have some TG fun! (I recently uploaded a video showing me breaking one.)
Thanks, I'll check it out. 😊

That’s beautiful. I can’t seem to find pieces of tempered glass. Any suggestions as to where to find.?
Thanks! Try local glass shops, ask them if they have any pieces that are unusable, offer to pay a discounted price for them. They may even have a pile of it in the back somewhere. If you want to purchase new, try display retailers who sell glass shelves. Check marketplace/thrift stores. HTH!

What do you use to seal the whole mosaic? I am unsure if I can use grout sealer with my polymer clay tiles and I can't find an answer anywhere!
Great question! One that I can’t answer because I’ve never sealed a poly clay mosaic. My instincts tell me that putting a sealer on pc wouldn’t be the best idea…? What sealer do you use? Whatever it is, I would def do a sample board to see if the sealer degrades the pc in any way…? Other than that, the only other thing I can think of would be to be very tidy when you apply it to the grout. Use a small paintbrush and apply it ONLY on the grout. Hope this helps!
This is what I was looking for!👍
hi Susan! how thick are polymer clay veneers to cut them easily with this utility cutter? I think also the brand of clay is matter, because katoclay is to hard for these.. cernit clay has white marks on the cutted edges when it is in dark colors.. Im keeping experimenting, but just to make it a little bit easier could you please tell what brand of clay are you using and how thick polymer clay usually is in your works?
Hi! The thickness of my veneers has much to do w/thickness of the other surrounding materials which typically range from 1/8” to 1/4”. The only 2 types of clay I use are Cernit translucent and Premo. A trick to hide the edges is to paint them black (or use a black sharpee/felt pen). Hope this helps!
@@SusanCrocenzi tnak you a lot for your answer! especially for an idea to paint edges, that sounds reaally good :)
What adhesive did you use? Curious to see if thin set will work? Want to incorporate into a mosaic
In general, I only use thinset for outdoor pieces, and since poly clay can fade in the sun, I avoid using them for outdoors/haven’t used thinset with them. It’s been so long, I can’t remember what adhesive I used. Typically, I use Weldbond, or Loctite superglue gel,
