The Reels of TJ Harrington & Son
Here is my little tribute to a range of reels made by a long departed UK manufacturer, probably known better in the UK for their GAT air pistol, TJ Harrington & Son, based at the Magda Works, Walton on Thames, England.
These reels were available in the UK in the 50's and 60's
The reels featured here are:
The Dan Dare...esque Omnia:
The Omnia, Le Omnia Super & Le Super Omnia, the latter two of which are otherwise identical and are of an early skirted spool design.
The Korka and The Magnet, which are also both Identical albeit for the name on the spool face, and possibly the orange grip of the Magnet (I have seen a Korka with this orange coloured grip).
The Magda, which is a slightly beefier version of the previous two.
And the somewhat over engineered Bantam, which has no manufacturers name cast into it, but is thought to be a much rarer TJH product. This reel also exudes a certain 50's space age look to it.
These reels were most probably aimed at the younger angler, or those on a budget.
They are made of cast alloy, but the internals of the Omnia and the Bantam are interesting to say the least (similar rotor gear), particularly the Bantam, which uses an almost identical gear train on both sideplates, with a centre linked pivoting, oscillating shaft for the spool, which makes for a weighty reel. Sadly all of these reels have a sluggish low retrieve ratio (certainly 2:1 for the Omnia).
A large single slotted screw at the rear end of the Omnia's main casing is all that is required to be removed, for the internals to be accessible (loosen scew off a few turns, tap screw head flush to body with the end of a screwdriver to force internals forward; fully remove screw and dissasemble. Replacing the assembly is a bit more fiddly however).
This company is also well known for its centerpin reels, with names like 'Little Kraka', 'Invicta', 'Maxima', Regina', 'Germina', 'and Triple Check'. Another reel, 'The Wey Mk1&2' is thought to have been a TJH product, but like the Bantam, no definite on this one either.
For those viewers outside of the UK, TJH used a modified spelling of old London slang terms for two of their reels; Little Kraka and Korka came from 'Little Cracker', and 'A Corker', meaning something particularly good.
They also made cast alloy sling shots.
Ok, not the British engineering boast of, say, Hardy or Youngs...or even intrepid for that matter, but definitely a nostalgic trip for some.
From my lone, but regularly undertaken observations over the past few years, I would put the Le Super Omnia / Le Omnia Super as most common of the bunch, followed by the occasional Korka, then Magda and Magnet, and least seen (by myself anyway), The Bantam.
I have added a partly self penned spooky, spacey tune to the video called 'Near The Speed of Light' (in keeping with the 50's rocketship look of some of the reels). Please use the volume down (or off) control if you find it too annoying.
Hope you enjoy this video, and thanks for watching.

Here is a small selection of reels from the 1930's to the 1960's, that have a unique look and appeal to them. The first (front left) is an American Pflueger Pelican, primarily aimed at freshwater use; designed around 1950, but released a bit too late to be a serious contender in 1955; packed with unique features, but its very unstreamlined appearance and slightly 'larger than the competion' siz...

Here are 10 little American Pflueger summit reels, dating from the early 30's to the mid 60's. The reels with the more spider web design on their sideplates are from between 1951 and 1966. The greenish marbled grip reels are from 30's (the one minus the grease cover is the earliest one here; 1931/32). The white grip reels with the extra (6th) sideplate screw are from 1941 to mid 42 (the only ti...

A small collection of Mitchell 440 Match reels from 1974 to 1988. The Match designation was (I think?) reserved for reels destined only for the European market (please correct me if I am wrong). They are a higher speed version of the older Mitchell 330 otomatic, which was first introduced around 1955. The three midnight blue reels are from 1974 and 1975, with the non-roller bail (not strictly a...

Here are six French half bail Mitchell reels from my collection of 15. Top middle and top left are reels from approx 1949. The boxed reel is a very early Mk3 from 1950 / 51 and is very close to mint condition. It's box is original and correct for the reel, being the last of earlier Mk2 box. The two reels either side of the boxed reel are, again, early Mk3's (the bail angle from the string guide...

My collection of American made Pflueger (knucklebuster) baitcaster / multiplier reels...so far!. Some of these reels appear to have had either very little use, or none at all, and have survived in this condition for well over half a century, which is testament to their superb build quality. Notable reels are the 1941 box marked Skilkast (far right middle row), which, in addition to being the fi...

I was one of many British kids who had Corgie and Dinky toys like the UFO series of toys and Thunderbirds, Captain scarlet, Batman and of course the very popular first gold James Bond Aston Martin DB5 with the little guy in the ejector seat. I treasured them and kept them pristine in their boxes (If only I could remember where they dissapeared to..??? So one day, back in the early 70's, I stopp...

This is my small collection of Abu Multiplier / Baitcaster reels, with my favourite Daiwa version thrown in. The ABU 7000 is very nostalgic for me, as it was my first Abu back in 1975, and though it can be considered a light boat reel, I only used mine on the beach and pier. Sadly not my original reel (sold it and have regretted it ever since), but Identical in every way to my original. The min...

This is a short video of my small collection of 'The Mitchell' fishing reels (apologies for the lack of a verbal description), which were produced around the late 40's to early 50's, before the 300 model name was applied to them (1956 or 57 I think?). The earliest reel here has the round anti-reverse knob. Cosmetically, 3 of the half bail reels were in a bit of a sad state, and so were professi...

Thank you for commenting. These two weren't far off this condition when I got them, and just needed a good clean to remove some minor dirt and fingerprints, and then some oil and some polish.

Yes, the very early models with the small round anti-reverse knob do indeed have brass transfer gears, well brass inserts at least, and they vary a little through that particular timeline. I now have two of these Mk2's (or 2nd versions if you prefer?), one reel's transfer gear has more brass in it than the other, also the oscillating gear of the earliest reels are thinner (two of a few subtle differences, to the later half bails). Thank you for your comment.
