Murray Laing
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 19 มิ.ย. 2017
I’m Murray Laing, a Scottish mountain dulcimer player and guitarist. My multiple sclerosis has finally made playing in public a bit of a challenge but I’m still writing songs and you might like to hear them. TH-cam looks like a way of playing for friends, old and new, from the comfort of my Cave.
I’m passionate about the therapeutic benefits of playing music. Try it if you don’t already. It’s probably why I’m still able to create new neural pathways after 50 years!
When I lost my wife in 2020, I immersed myself in learning to play the mountain dulcimer. I even found a nearly-just-intonated instrument so I could try to play the Scottish fiddle tune ‘Niel Gow’s Lament for the Death of his Second Wife’. You can find it in the Links section below.
Visit this channel to find videos of me playing (sometimes with guitarist Jimmy Hawthorn) on all sorts of guitars, dulcimers and occasional banjo.

Kathy’s Song
'Kathy's Song', from Simon and Garfunkel's 1966 album 'Sounds of Silence' has been playing in our heads since we were schoolboys. Now we're septuagenarians, we thought we'd play it for real.

Heading for Home

Peggy Seeger wrote this a few years ago: wonderful lyrics. We two old guys have tried to do it justice with guitar and Appalachian dulcimer. Seeger recorded it with her understandably frail voice and signature banjo. Rufus Wainwright and John Legend's cover is worth a listen. A beautiful song that Jimmy and I just had to do.
John Riley

'John Riley', famously recorded by Joan Baez, Judy Collins and The Byrds, is an old folk song about parted lovers (and there are many more with similar story lines). Guitar players will spot that I'm using a drop D capo, because the tune goes back and forth between an Am chord and a D (major) chord. Yes: f is f# in this version of A minor (because it's in the Dorian mode).

Partial capo/cut capo lesson. A tutorial explaining how I understand and use a partial guitar capo. My approach seems to be different from anything else I’ve found on TH-cam. Link to www.looknohands.com
for Phil Ochs

The song is about the summer of 1970 - between school and university - when I first heard Phil Ochs' voice, and fell in love with a girl.
If I Had My Time Again
มุมมอง 425 หลายเดือนก่อน
A song about First Love. I honestly believed my experience was unique until I thought about it: 'The First Cut Is the Deepest' - and just about every pop song ever written - is about this. Heartbreak is an experience many of us go through. I hope you can relate to my song.
That Ever Was Their Way

The song is about corrupt politicians. The 'Parcel of Rogues' Robert Burns wrote about in the 18th century sold out their country for personal profit. Sounds sadly familiar today. I'm glad I'm living on the Scottish side of the border: watching England's democracy burn, rather than being in the thick of it. 12-string Maton guitar with partial capo allows interesting chord voicings.
Blackwaterside

'Blackwaterside' is a traditional song often associated with Bert Jansch, who learned it from Anne Briggs. Many people have played it in their own style (including me) but it's hard to avoid echoes of Jansch's arrangement, even if you try. I'm using a Martin D28 with a partial capo.
My Dulcimer Collection

Just me talking about my collection of Appalachian dulcimers: instruments by Folkcraft, McSpadden, George Orthey and the Hagen Family.
Eleanor Plunkett/ Bridget Cruise

Carolan composed for the aristocratic Eleanor Plunkett, but Bridget Cruise was a young woman he loved before smallpox took his sight. Playing them together is a work in progress - and I'll probably record a dulcimer and guitar version with Jimmy Hawthorn.
Old Men Cry

I'm a baby boomer; I was born in 1952. My youth in the 70s was a time of hope when everyone I knew would make the world a better place when they were running things - their office, their school . . . the country ! What went wrong? While we were talking Peace, Love and Family, the nasty, greedy people were beavering away below the radar . . . getting into positions of power. We didn't even notic...
Galileo

My daughter told me I had failed to change the world because I was a privileged baby boomer with a house and a comfortable pension. I said Change is coming anyway - and started banging on about paradigm shift . . . and Galileo. This song was written in that moment . . . I've only tidied up the words and written a tune for it. I remain optimistic that, although we live in hard times, change will...
The Soldier Betrayed: dulcimer
มุมมอง 1137 หลายเดือนก่อน
'The Sheep Stealer' is a song about enforced poverty from about 1800. I first heard it on Roger Nicholson's legendary 'Nonesuch for Dulcimer' album in 1972. I use the tune to connect the present time to the social injustice of the past. I'm playing my Orthey dulcimer, which sings best in DAc tuning.
Bonny at Morn

'Bonny at Morn' dates from about 1800 on the English-Scottish Border; I'm playing it on an Appalachian dulcimer made by George Orthey in 1984 in Pennsylvania, USA. Stuff for dulcimer geeks:- I acquired an Orthey dulcimer thinking that a dulcimer made in 1984 would sound good tuned DAa. It didn't at first - though I've since worked out that tuning to d on the third fret solves the problem. I gue...
