CONTEMPLATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY (Part One) | Learning to See with the "Eyes of the Heart"
Good video, thanks. The F-mount/DSLR version of the lens is pretty good too.
I have the Zfc for a walk around camera. I have been happy with it and the kit (16-50mm) lens, but I have been eyeing a more all around lens for walking around. Thanks for the recommendation and video.
Interesting video, however I can’t help but think of the quip by Ken Rockwell, “Bad rich amateurs think fuzzy black and white images of poor people are art.”. I think if someone has a broader goal or long term project in mind, such as documentation of the area/conditions/people, then it would be okay. A single photo maybe is too shallow to give subject the justice it deserves.
@@jasonwroyal 🤯
@@jasonwroyal that is a very challenging quote!
@@johnepattisonindeed….i felt the same way the first time I heard it.
Love video. Fan of pipes. Smashing. London. June 1-4
Like the story with the Holy water. I'm Catholic. ALL us humans are God's beloved children
Beautiful. Totally agree, Tony!
Interesting video, think I recognised nearly all the locations, only ones I've not been to are Mull and Iona. Edinburgh is always good for fotos, I lived in the castle for a couple of years long ago during my army service. Anywho, I recently took delivery of a Z50ii and am delighted with it. Paired with a Tamron 50-400 it has replaced a Fuji X-T3 and XF150-600 which was simply too big and heavy on longer walks and had woeful AF. The subject detection and tracking on the Z50ii has amazed me, but it's the first camera I've used with these capabilities. Am normally more of a D700 kinda guy 😂 Hope you make it back over to Scotland again, it's a great place to be.
I’ve been photographing downtown San Antonio for 6 years and I still feel like a “dude with a camera”. Like a previous commenter said, because it’s pretty dead, people tend to be very aware of who is around them so it can be difficult to take photos. Taking pictures of people who are struggling is an easy shot, but I’ve rarely shared them unless it tells a story and it’s never with bad intentions. 9 times out of 10 I won’t take the shot. My goal is to document the city I grew up in and the people who inhabit it in hopes of telling a meaningful story. Your pictures were great and good luck on your journey.
@@jc-pk9bu Thank you for weighing in. I really like what you said about taking pictures of folks who are struggling: it’s an easy shot, but you take it only rarely and only to tell a story. As a local, those stories take on added importance for you.
Agreed I have the z50 with the 2 on order. Mine is paired with the 26 pancake lens. It is a really sharp lens. I am going to get the 18-140 when the 50 .2 comes in. Hopefully it will be here this month. I also shoot the z8 and zf, but the little one is my go to travel set up.
@@ericerickson6537 I’ve not used the 26mm yet! My favorite everyday focal length is 40mm full-frame equivalent. I use the 28mm 2.8 SE to get close. I definitely have been wanting to try the 26mm.
As a photographer living in San Antonio, I totally agree with the fact that downtown is usually dead and street photography here is kinda hard for that reason. That and street photography isnt a common thing, so people are a bit more aware of you taking photos of them. Makes it a little awkward sometimes.
@@johncarlan This local perspective is helpful.
Great video, impressed by your photos and more impressed by your character John
@@kameronbrothers What a kind thing to say. Thank you.🙏
I have this combo and what I like is the reduced weight. I also have the Zf which is about 300g (10 ozs) heavier without the full frame lenses.
@@douglasfarringdon3165 As a fellow Zf owner, I couldn’t agree more.
Agreed this is a great travel combo. We actually have it twice in our household (bodies in different colours though). Mainly used by the kids but I also enjoy picking them up from time to time. Just a joy to use
Yes! My oldest daughter and I have done several photo trips to the coast and to a ghost town we visit every year in Oregon. She uses the Zfc and I use one of my other cameras.
I got a great Zfc used for about $900 from Mpb. I have the Nikon Zf now but I still use the Zfc if I want to go lightweight for street photography
@@justo_photography I am loving the Zf but, wow, is it heavy.
This video comes at an appropriate time for me. Both for the travel topic, and the camera. Today is 02 Dec '24. St Andrew's day in Scotland. As for the camera, I own three Z cameras. A 5, 50, and a Zfc. The "Black Friday" sales are on now, and I've been seriously tempted to trade one of my current Zs for a Z6II. (I still prefer it to the III.) I'd pretty much decided that the Zfc would be the one to go. But now I can't bear to part with it. Both the Z50 and the Zfc are seriously underrated cameras. I also have the full frame Z5, but I find that with a good lens the results from the DX cameras are 95 % as good. My only grumble with the Zfc is the flip-out screen. I don't like them on any camera, and it seems particularly inappropriate on the retro styled Zfc. (In fact that's why I would prefer the 6II to the 6III, and will not trade my Z50 for a Z50II.)
@@irvinmartin9259 The fully articulating screen is controversial. I personally like it, not least because for two years I filmed most of my talking head videos for my job using the Zfc. But you’re right that it doesn’t really “go.” I also have a Nikon Z7II. And I recently purchased the full-frame Zf. I like it a lot. But again: flippy screen. Happy St. Andrew’s Day to you!
So the Z50ii has more traditional ergonomics than the Z fc? 😂😂😂
@@caskraker Should have said “conventional.”
You are doing great. A sub and warm respect for you. Beautiful images. Perfect colors. Though this lens leaves asking for more on the noise side ( Less noise expected) which could be managed in post processing easily. I ordered z50ii with this lense combo. I sell lot of images and videos on stock sites. The basic purpose of having this combo is to have great images and videos which have commercial value.
@@digivimsfilms9406 Selling to stock sites is a great use case! I’m hearing really good things about the Z50ii so far!
Not a pro or a street photographer, but when out with my camera, I simply try to be respectful and not creepy. I like taking photos of stuff way more than people, but I will take random people as long as it does not violate my simple rules.
That's a good standard: "respectful not creepy."
1st comment can u pin It is a good lens though
What a great video! I'm planning a trip to Smith Rock for October and now I'm going to alter my plans a bit to include the Painted Hills. I really enjoyed your photography and how you presented it in the video. Job well done.
where is your podcast??
Very cool. I don't spend much time in Silverton as it's usually just a town on our route elsewhere. There really is a lot to that little town.
Superb. 🎉
Great shots John. You have an artist eye. Thanks for sharing your beautiful and creative photography. If I may offer some advice...You mentioned alot about a more experienced TH-camr. Be different. Be unique. Avoid criticizing your work on camera. Comparison is an ugly poisoning of joy and soul. Be you. Please for God sake, don't desire to be like one of those popular TH-camrs who lust more for likes, hits, subscribers then the artistic process - who say...'Hey guys what's up, today, my hot young Barbie girlfriend and I....blah blah blah blah blah blah...' Be you John, no one on earth can do you better than you. God bless you brother. I really enjoy your work.
I really enjoyed this. I stumbled upon your channel and I’m glad I did! Relaxing ❤
The vertical shot at 1:50 is lovely, but I would like to see more foreground and less clouds. That's a cardinal rule for me when composing a shot such as this one, where the rock formation towers over its surroundings, and the viewpoint is closer to the onlooker. This compositional maxim applies to horizontal shots as well, such as the image at 10:15. More foreground, less sky. Just a thought. Carry on!
John, I would really enjoy doing some photography with you.
Gorgeous photos! Way to get out there. I look forward to more. Btw, I love the b&w as well as the color. Enjoy!
Thank you, Jacquelyn!
I definitely would like to get over to the coast for some photography. You would think that living in Salem would mean it would happen occasionally, but something else always takes priority. For the record, I prefer the golden tones over the black and white.
I hear you! It’s only a couple hours away, but I don’t go nearly enough.
There's a simple and deep profoundness in the gift of reflections you offer at the end. I loved seeing something of the journey. Of the responsiveness to the gifts the world gives - I had engaged the book you talk about a couple of years ago and thoroughly loved it! I sit with a bit of a dryness of heart at present, and I am reminded of the awe and wonder in the little and simple parts of life around us. God present in the moment of light, of dull grey, of winds sweeping through, of nature bending to say hello - do you see me. Each action a sense of God saying, I am here . . . . notice this present in the presence.
Love this!!!
Stumbled onto this . . . really appreciated it. Really appreciated it!
Thank you, Denise!
"Ife is too short, too precious to be viewed through a rear view mirror." Beautifully said! Thank you.

I really enjoy these videos John! They are calming and inspiring (for a fellow photographer). In this video you call yourself a beginner, and I chuckled out loud. If this is your "beginner" photography then I'm going to go ahead and purchase one of your prints as an investment. "I was on to John before he was National Geographics Photographer of the year ."
Wow! Thanks, Mark. This really means a lot, not least because it’s coming from such a brilliant photographer. I’ve long admired your work.

Oh, and I’m working on the next two videos now. ;-)
This inspires me to pick up my wife’s camera and start shooting. What’s the music that accompanies your pencil sharpener shots?
That song is called “Love Aside” by Patrick Patrikios. He’s on TH-cam here: th-cam.com/channels/TPI2hZYxoHtdGEpdFoaU5A.html I downloaded the song from the TH-cam music library. I’m going to put the song information in the credits. Thanks for watching, Barry!
