Music by OB-LIX from Pixabay (pixabay.com/users/ob-lix-17147719/?)

No, greed makes us the dumbest species on earth.

... did we need this lecture to realize the glass and thirsty experiment? Is neuroscience at this level of "trivial popular" knowledge? Do neuroscientists and psychologist study system and control theory before doing any expensive experiments? ... They seem to lake of those basics' notions of science and technology
Emotions, like she said, have no meaning, except for the meaning we give it in the moment and that we then add on later through memory. We should by evidence, understand that emotions, come and go and as she says clearly, and I agree, they do not belong to us, nor are they constructed by one alone. Emotions are and can be transmitted from generation to generation. They arise and are given meaning through ignorance and through personal interpretation, based on what we have learned or been taught. The main point would be to understand and give no meaning to the emotions. We can just allow them to manifest, to exist and to pass through, but we don’t because we identify erroneously with all our emotions and we do that with our feelings, perceptions and of course our thoughts. All of which are finite and ephemeral.
“Emotions don’t live in your body. They are constructed in the brain.” Well, here we go again with the separation of mind and body. There is no evidence that the mind is located in the brain. It is literally a belief. There is no evidence that thoughts appear in the brain either. All we know is that the brain, through measurements reveals in image readings when thoughts appear in our consciousness. The brain is not a separate part of the body as stated in the quote above. The body-mind is one whole. I also found it very odd, that in Lisa Feldman’s presentation, we are only shown eye facial expressions to guess an emotion. Who reads an emotion only on that? I certainly don’t and can’t read a person by a singular part of the body. I read the whole body. Even then, all I am doing is getting a perception based on my own conditioning. Finally, stating that reality is what happens outside your head, is once again stating that there are alternative realities. If this was the case, then all of these realities, appear or exist where? They would have to exist and appear in one singular reality. In other words, there is only one reality.
Go Lisa! 🎉

I wish she would talk more about the implications and applications on practices within the mental health industry, from diagnosis, treatment, therapy, psycho education, and research. So many of the ideas she is debunking are the foundation of mental health discourses that could be holding back the industry from improving and helping people. How fabulous would a book on that topic be! She would be in a good position to write on that topic as someone who also trained to be a clinical psychologist. If any viewers here has links or resources to this aspect of the work, please comment :)
Amazing

Good morning & afternoon. Interesting lecture .
Apparently, the camera operator wasn't smart enough to understand the need to pan and show the screen. We really don't need to see the speaker at all.
Triple Triangulation Project sounds very profoundly interesting. Thanks for wonderful presentation. Your research is one of the most robust, rational and reflective study on hard problematics of core consciousness.😮
Deez nuts!
One of the best talk-series I've ever heard. Thank you!
So exciting. May your depts fame proceed and I be able to claim I heard this today 20 June 2024
Three brilliant lectures by Lisa Feldman Barrett with many, for me, new insights. I only miss the distinction between people and animals. Being able to observe the concepts placed in our model of reality and manipulate them. This allows us to think in metaphors.
Great lecture... here's some Freud Sigmund Freud, 1937 "In another group of cases we are surprised by an attitude in our patients which can only be put down to a depletion of the plasticity, the capacity for change and further development, which we should ordinarily expect. We are, it is true, prepared to find in analysis a certain amount of psychical inertia. When the work of analysis has opened up new paths for an instinctual impulse, we almost invariably observe that the impulse does not enter upon them without marked hesitation. We have called this behaviour, perhaps not quite correctly, ‘resistance from the id’. But with the patients I here have in mind, all the mental processes, relationships and distributions of force are unchangeable, fixed and rigid. One finds the same thing in very old people, in which case it is explained as being due to what is described as force of habit or an exhaustion of receptivity - a kind of psychical entropy. But we are dealing here with people who are still young. Our theoretical knowledge does not seem adequate to give a correct explanation of such types. Probably some temporal characteristics are concerned - some alterations of a rhythm of development in psychical life which we have not yet appreciated." -Analysis Terminable and Interminable
47:46 Informatively, if you ask a physicist such as Chris Fields, perception causes entanglement: th-cam.com/video/aeh9bSuSNrA/w-d-xo.html I was quite surprised to see Lisa state that affect is a property of consciousness. Wasn't this more precisely Mark Solms' view? I wonder if she changed her terminology tactics somewhat after their debates. That would certainly be a positive thing.
It was already her view before 2017 because she writes about it in her book How emotions are made.
@@babooshka7601 Interesting, thanks. She gave me more of an illusionist type of vibe but maybe I was wrong.
What a pleasant, close and warm presentation!. I imagine the effort to share (in a colloquial way, close to general divulgation, and in a short time for dissertation) the extensive empirical and theoretical scientific work. Thanks for sharing, and hugs from Chile.
The first belief is a strawman! People expressing 'unexpected' facial expressions or not expressing emotions on their faces when they're expected to do so does not refute anything; it merely points to the fact that humans can supress their facial expressions or modify them to fit in or obey the rules of the social environment they're in: e.g a child may not express anger on their face perhaps because it may be frawed upon to do so.
Only vertebrates have adaptable immune systems - the subtitle is incorrect (I was stumbling over my words but I was saying that "In vertebrates, immune systems learn and so they're adaptable." Invertebrates do not have an adaptable immune system.
Is your piece on the philosophy of science mentioned on Day 3 published yet? (I have looked & not found) 🙏🏻
If like you say, we feel in the brain, why does the body jump when we step on glass? The time it takes for the impulse to reach the brain and send a signal back for the foot to move is longer than the reaction time?
> How would it be to live and to have no goals, whatsoever? I think you can get close to an answer for this question by observing the deeply clinically depressed. They will tend to have very few and very weak positive goals (buying stuff, self-realization) due to having a low capacity for enjoyment and act only when necessary to avoid further suffering, and sometimes note even that. An agent with no goals is likely, in my view, to do nothing.
rest in peace dear Frans...

Great video! Tks for sharing.
Everyone should check out the work of John Vervaeke!
Great talk. I'm also grateful for the audience who asked great questions.

Fine speaker and very interesting lecture! Dr. Herbert Clark cognetive behavior notions and views on Panic Attacks process are sound!
Please show the screen.

when as a young person I went to the cinema they played at the end of the film [ god save the queen ] As the bars of this tune began , people would run for the exit and as it got going felt they must stay . It took a brave person to ignore the crowd and keep going to the exit .
wish we could see the screen...
All of this is such good sense. The explanations are so level-headed, a rare find in today's analytic philosophy. How philosophy found itself down the silly paths leading to mystery and confusion is more a question for an economist who can see the structure of incentives that drive thinkers towards big intractable problems that lead to many papers published and eventual tenure. The will to illusion is strong for more reasons than just job security, though, but it is a strong factor. Glad someone like Thomasson is pushing for deflationary accounts of metaphysics.
It is urgent to come to terms with these questions. Nobody has a clue how consciousness arises and nobody knows how large language models work which behave like sentient entities in every measurable way. The risk that we make an enemy out of advanced AI because we mistreat it is very high.
very true

Dear Thomas Metzinger: you work has profoundly influenced my experience through life, thank you!
Can socrates meet his own obligations if he doesn't want to meet his own obligations ? (No coersion)
If i promise pat to g at time t and at time t i prefer to break my promise to pat, would i perform my promise to pat? So,are there independant-desire reasons? Is searle equating desires with likings or inclinations?
Why we can't have declarative statements without language? I can think p has property t.
Some say that assigning property T to thing X requires language, since to even have a notion of that property T requires language. They would say that even an Orca’s realization that “that seal is on that ice floe” is not realized in their mind in that way but is instead a pre-linguistic biological mental state that doesn’t have (or for that matter, even need) declarative statements.
