KEN COLYER JAZZMEN - Harlem Rag
KEN COLYER JAZZMEN - Harlem Rag
Another track from my first ever LP, New Orleans to London. Some wonderful solos from Chris and Monty.
This is the band formed in 1953 when Ken returned from his adventures in New Orleans.
Personnel were: -
Ken Colyer (Tpt)
Monty Sunshine (Clt)
Chris Barber (Tbn)
Tony Donnegan (Bjo) [later known as Lonnie Donegan]
Jim Bray (Bass)
Ron Bowden (Dms)
The photos are from the 1910s/1920s era - an old album I found in my Aunty Betty's things. She lived to the age of ninety and was born at the turn of the Century.

This is the flip-side of the '78' Streamline Train. It was broken into two halves and I tried gluing it but it kept pausing and repeating certain bits. This is as good as it gets!

The flip-side was not so obliging and tended to repeat itself in places as we shall see. STREAMLINE TRAIN Streamline train, fastest train above. Hard worked train, aint gonna hurt you none. Often rubbed shoulders with Ken in the pub opposite his club - 51 Club In Soho's London. All night sessions there were great. Down the narrow stairs to a little cafe and dance room where the band played. Tiny place. Good job there was never a fire!!

Can you tell me anything about this song? Altho' there are lots of recordings about Stackolee, none are anything like Colyer's version. I first heard this on a jukebox on Raf Compton Bassett in 56-58 doing my national service - been singing it ever since

I think Danny Pawson was the nearest to a real NO trumpet player. His band played a wide range of music but always in the NO style. Sadly missed.
