Recycling Dye Bath Leftovers: A Practical Solution
Video Tutorial by Michel Garcia: www.woolmasters.com
Many dyers, from craftsmen to hobbyists who occasionally engage in natural dyeing, encounter the challenge of managing leftover dyes. Following a dyeing session, pots are often brimming with unused dyes. These natural dyes are not quickly exhausted, and while making pale tones is an option, it requires a substantial amount of pre-treated fabric, which may need to be more readily available. Additionally, pale tones often lack the lightfastness and wash fastness of deeper colors.
Frequently, after some hesitation and a sense of regret, the remaining dye is disposed of. Although this disposal is generally safe for the environment, it feels wasteful to discard valuable dyes. The same happens with the remnants of alum used in mordanting wool and silk, leaving pots of transparent liquid with undetermined alum concentrations that typically go to waste.
Michel Garcia, in his new course, offers straightforward and confidence-inspiring guidance on addressing this issue.
He suggests transforming these leftovers into pigments.
This method is elegantly simple: pigments can be preserved as a paste for extended periods without drying, particularly if a drop of essential oil is added. The process of creating pigments is as engaging as cooking and evokes the spirit of ancient alchemy. These pigments can be later reactivated in an acidic solution for use in dyeing wool and silk or for printing purposes.
The requirements for this process are minimal: leftover dye, some aluminum sulfate or leftover mordant liquid, and a bit of soda ash. You'll also need a funnel and a piece of fabric for filtration. It's important to strain the dye beforehand to remove any plant residues.
Ultimately, the most essential tools are your existing skills, patience and curiosity, which every dyer should possess.

Chitosan is a fascinating material derived primarily from chitin, the second most abundant natural polysaccharide after cellulose, found in the exoskeletons of crustaceans like crabs, shrimp, and lobsters, as well as in the cell walls of fungi. It is produced through a deacetylation process that removes acetyl groups from chitin, transforming it into a more soluble form. Biodegradability and Ec...

Introduction to Michel Garcia's Tutorial "Big Silk Workshop"
Dear Monsieur Garcia, thank you for sharing your life expertise. Please share where I can purchase your courses from. I've searched for quite a bit and couldn't find a proper source. Thank you.
which course is this an exert from ?
I use indigo as a hair product and i find the history fascinating, along with that of henna and senna.
IDI0T! Why are you talking about our continent! Get the fuck out of Africa! 🤮🤮🤮
👍👍👍
Thank you! Fascinating. Looking forward to experimenting.
Mille fois merci! I was just searching for a possibility to use a small amount of dried Japanese indigo leaves (growin in northern Germany), as many of my plants dried out while I was on holiday. This is perfect and also very instructive. Thank you so much!
Thought it was gunna be some pompas ass getting an ego buzz . Buttt the guys really kicking ass man .knows his stuff well impressed great stuff.
Wonder if indigo is related to indica .indian blue . wonder if indica was an origin name of the canabis variety with the blue leaves /kark green /black/purple . Not just wide leaved variety. Afghans had a wide keaf awel as thin leaf .afganica . Looks lije the blue and dark strains cane from india or i mean through india possible to afghanistan and probably from china by its geniologucal record. So all you landrace seed hunters i would look to india for your blue leaf strains maybe especially for its rooot origins .maybe possibly china if thetes evidence to sugest a dominant dark leaf cultuvar strain. Just saying the word indigo has more than just a word going for it.
Thank you, just what I wanted to learn. You explain so well.
in your organic indigo tutorial you use 1 part of indigo to 3 parts of sugar (1:2:3) , and in this video you use 4 parts of indigo to 1 part of sugar (4:3:2:1) , why ?
Why always talking there are deaf people too
If you start with dried leaves like this can you follow these steps and let it settle to eventually get material to make paint pigment? Will the indigo settle at the bottom?
This is a WONDERFUL explanation - thank you so much for sharing it!
so the darker pattern will stay, and the lighter background from the tannin will fade, but with what did you make the pattern on the cloth with?
So happy that u gave credit to Sindh the province in now Pakistan previously India Where this originated. The soil of sindh has been marked as the most ideal for cultivation of this crop.
Where can u get this tutorial
Where can I follow this tutorial?
How much alum would you use for a gigantic dyebath?
Have you any information about copper mordant?
Good explanation, but I am confused you explain about western indigo history, but you didn’t say any indian indigo history,,,,,,,you just explainaing that Portuguese bring indigo to India through the trade route.but Portuguese came to India just to do business and black paper business.from 14th century its stared indian textile are exported to Europe and India earning a lot.but you explain about western indigo and forget about indian legacy.
@@oldsoldierneverdie12 i just answered to one question, i did not intend to make an encyclopaedia of indigo, so do not hesitate to communicate to us the indian history of indigo
You are a treasure.
I have been intrigued by Indigo from Childhood not only of its colonial and political aspects being from the Bengal part India subcontinent... But also as a printmaker i am facinated how indigo works as a dye, and everytime i learn that there is so much more to learn and experiment with this amazing leaf dye. Thanks for lighting the fire again❤
I have no idea why this came up in my suggestions. It was soothing.
Interesting, thank you. Very good way of explaining. Colours definitely looked vibrant.
Thank you very much!
Great
How to get hydrolyzed tannins? We need to extraction by using acid? How?

Great work. Indigo is our life as well
thank you for the class! but why is the process called the "English process" if the tank technique came from the Americas?
I do not understand the question, which technique was created in americas
Maravillosa aportación la que nos ofrece Michel en estos videos. Mi agradecimiento y felicitación por su trabajo. Un saludo. Amparo
Thank you for sharing your process, currently, I am practicing your 1 2 3 method for my workshops in Vietnam. Clear process with controlled formulation.
Merci beaucoup pour ce partage! Quel est le mordançage des derniers échantillons (noirs)? On entend le mot fer, mais c'est ensuite coupé. Fer + titane?
I dye-ved in to natural dyeing last year with a very small budget. I bought indigo tinctoria and suffruticosa, as well as persicaria seeds. The suffruticosa lead the journey. I also tried a hairpowder extraction. Thank you Michel Garcia for making it seem feasible to dye at home, effortlessly.
Thank you, Michel!
Thank you, Michel, for your work!
Thank you so much. For years I have taught these tales without realising the insights you have been so kind to share. Frances Russell-Matthews
Beautiful. I want to learn
Очень красиво!
Merci Michel. Et en français en+ 😊
Bonjour Michel. Fascinant cette nouvelle méthode. As tu déjà essayé avec Isatis?
