This was exactly what I was looking for on the internet. I'm building a project and I wanted to know if it would work to use an 11-40 cassette with a Tiagra 10s. Pro tip, you know zip ties can be reused? Get a sharp pointed knife and you can carefully use the point to hold the notch inside the fastening part and undo the zip tie for reuse.

i know its been 4 years, but you have to roll the bag really tight in order to prevent water from getting in.

Kudos for you for your honesty! Wish more people were. Have you tried a silicone spray such as atasko silicone spray? I have used it to refresh my tarps and rainflys. It works extremely well. Best wishes to you.

What brand of the cassette ?

Good solution... I have always used tape, then heavy duty UV resistant zip ties, then cover everything with another layer of gorilla tape. But I was never fully satisfied partly due to the fact I could not completely tighten down the zip tie, but also because it looked like a mess. Never had a failure over thousands of miles, but this solution looks better / cleaner. Thx! The choice of Silicone is what cause the failure, not all silicone are created equal, id try using the GE silicone 100% silicone. I have great succes using a 100% silicone.

Great minds and all that. I've been considering something similar, but using 2 of those extenders. One on top, the other below to hold the cargo off my head tube and cables and spread the load. I reckon my dry bag would nestle in between them nicely. And a couple of volle straps would keep the roll in place. Might be a low budget alternative to an expensive cradle. Cheers

Excellent solution. I also live in an extremely hilly area. My current rig has a 1x setup with a 38T chain ring and an 11-51 cassette. Great on the steeps, less good on the flats. Online gear-inch calculators offer hours of fun figuring it all out. I'm just thinking about swapping the 38 for a 40 or a 42. Cheers Cheers

After years now at this point, did you ever run into issues with the carbon fork? I keep getting told and reading you shouldn't mount to a carbon fork.. even when my fork has multiple mounting points.

Is it ok to substitute denatured alcohol for mineral spirits to thin silicone ?

Tbf, i think the fabric of your bags were repelling the water well, however if zips are not waterproof or seals somehow fail, i dont think it will make much of a difference? I have bought some sealant and turps to try this myself on a few bags i would like water resistant, see how it goes.

Panniers are, in my opinion, the cleanest and sleekest option. Dealing with small bags scattered everywhere, constantly tightening, loosening, packing, and unpacking... there's just too much going on. With panniers, you simply dump everything in and hit the pedal.

I replaced my Blackburn straps. They are not the greatest.

Awesome video, thank you! I've been kicking around the idea of trading in 4 of my bikes - which includes a nice Specialized Allez Sport - and buying a new Specialized Diverse Elite E5 for touring. I'm not interested in using it on gravel as I have a Specialized Stumjumper FSR Comp that's much better equipped for challenging off-road riding, and I have a vintage Stumpjumper M2 S-Works hardtail for bikepacking. I think the Diverge would be perfect for me because I like my Allez, but want/need a more compliant ride with the Diverge's stronger wheels and wider tires. You cannot waterproof a standard zipper, tried it many times and many ways.... it's impossible. Look at the zipper on the dry suits scuba divers wear and see that they are not the kind of zipper used on clothing. They are a special zipper and you have to rub bees wax into the zipper to make it 100% waterproof. Regardless of how well you think your bag is, ALWAYS put your electronics in a waterproof zip-lock bag before you put it in your backpack. You never know when you are going to fall into a lake, stream, etc. Plan ahead, don't take unnecessary risks with gear you can't afford to lose just to avoid 30 seconds of easy work.

How long is the drying time for the solution?

Basically there are two options for synthetic bags. PU and silicone. What failed in this video was the zips. Look into Odicoat PU gel for waterproofing this kind of material. Have a look welted seams and polyester for new bags.

Very nice. I question the notion of "a bag inside a bag". I use a 20 liter dry bag on my back rack to hold my sleeping bag (down), a Klymit air mat, Trekology pillow, extra clothing and camera gear. Because I have a pattern for accessing all of this gear I pack it in such a way that no stuff sacks are required. We all do our own thing. The important thing is to be out there doing "it". I can totally relate to having everything you need, and nothing more. Two thumbs up on that score. Cheers from Montreal QC
