One good thing I've seen to take for high-AE runs is "militant epicurnianism" (10 free stab per desecrated temple at the cost of -90% omen power). I see it as useful because you can always keep stab up, and when you're huge I find that the omens aren't that great anyway, since you usually have a hugely diverse empire.

An interesting thing about the Medians: there's really no evidence that they ever formed an empire of their own. Herodotus makes mention of one hundreds of years after the fact in his writings, but the contemporary writings of the Assyrians and Babylonians, as well as the material findings, don't support such an empire ever existing.
