That's awesome.... I'm going to have to build one now.
What kind of feed do you use? People have told me after full grown they should be switched off game bird feed to layer feed
@@BlessedMamaJacklynn it’s really a personal preference. I like using chick starter because it’s a higher than average layer protein, but not as high as game bird feed. Chick starter is usually about 22% where as gamebird is like 28-30%. As long as you add calcium you’ll be fine, if you don’t want to add calcium just buy a layer crumble and you’ll be fine.
They do stink! This is great. I’m loving your channel! Great job!
Your setup is fantatic! Love it!!!
Thanks so much!! Mostly made with scrap wood and some “red neck engineering “. Ha ha
I love Hank!! 🥹🥰
Yes! He’s a rockstar over here!! We also have Hank #2 and #3. Ha ha
Thanx for the video, nice cages, what's the measurements of your cages??
Hey there! Thanks for watching. They are 3ft deep by 8ft wide. Each section is about 12” high for the birds. This setup has worked well for me and is a good size for about 50 birds.
@NHQuail thanx for sharing the info. Keep them videos coming. Have a blessed day.
I’m in the Sacramento valley of California and we just had 5 weeks of mostly 105 degrees. My problem is more keeping the birds cooler.
Do you ever give your birds some fresh cut clover or grass? I run my mower over red clover in the side yard to the chickens. My quail are now 8 weeks old, so they might be ready IF that's appropriate.
@@rodr5785 yes! I have a good size garden and they get plants of greens from the garden. As well as some grass. They also love cucumbers and any type of squash
Glad to see you back, Cheyne! And good on you for taking a break when you needed it. That's awesome! -Linda
@@QuailUniversity thanks so much Linda! Just needed to get a few things in life squared away. Back to normal (as normal as can be) for now! Hope you are well!!
Thank you. I found some smaller ones on amazon by searching for 'quail feeder ports'.
Can you link where you bought ya birds from?
Nice
Great video. I'm definitely gonna try this.
Awesome
It is so nice to see an informative video without annoying obnoxious music blaring in the back ground. Thanks from Alabama. 👍 keep’em coming
Love this I made one of those out of a trash basket. It’s perfect for my chickens. I put three of them on there, but this is great for my quail and it’s the perfect size to put into their cage. Thank you so much for this idea. I am super excited too, thank you again❤️🌸👍🏼
Where is the link for the feeder?
Hey sorry, I tried to get it on here but I’m bad with tech. Go to Etsy and type in “no waste quail feeder”. Since this video I’ve been using these instead. A little smaller, and have even less waste. Installation is the same. Let me know if you can’t find them and I’ll try and send a link to you via email. Thanks!
I give my quail a good container of sand to play around in
They love it!!!
Cool design but I had bad experience with wooden pallets coop, rats made a big hole and kill all my quails in only one night. Never use wooden materials without metal net protecting since.
Yeah, it all depends on your area and the critters you have. We have never even seen a rat on our property so I didn’t have to worry about that so much, but if you have them then definitely throw some wire netting around the base as well. Thanks for the feedback.
Love this video! Nice work, Cheyne!
Thanks so much!!! I try to focus on cheap and easy ways for people who have limited space to still benefit from these little birds. Been a lot of fun doing these videos and sharing what I learn along the way.
I converted my old shed into a duck house. Just had to cut a few windows for ventilation, lay down linoleum and run electric for the lights. Works great!
Great idea!!!
where did you buy the part that goes in the bucket
I got these on Amazon. Just look up no waste chicken feeder. Since this video I found the exact same thing just smaller ones on Etsy. Look up no waste quail feeder. These even work better with even less waste. Hope that helps
Where's the link??
Sorry I tried attaching it but wouldn’t work. I found the quail feeders on Etsy are even better. Less waste as they are a little smaller for the quail. Same installation concept. Go to Etsy and type up quail feeder. You’ll see them right away. Good luck
How are your quail so tame? Ours always run away
Hatching them out I am the only “mother” they ever know. I play around with them when I feed and water, plus trying to not over crowd seems to help a lot too. Other than that just getting good stock. Thieving otter and Gopher Ridge, and SW Game birds. Has a lot to do with it.
@@NHQuail how many birds per square foot do you do?
So I run less birds SF than most. I like to keep a bird per SF or even sometimes 2 per SF. Some people will tell you to keep up to 3-4 birds per SF. That seems a bit much to me. I like to let them have some quality of life and enjoy their space. I’m not knocking those who keep more. Honestly if I was shipping hatching eggs and had a bigger operation I would keep more birds per SF but a small backyard operation like I have I can afford to give them a little more comfort.
I used similar lights to brighten up the area around my tool chest. I'll have to set something up for our quail. Great Idea, thanks! P.S. We didn't use Kasa anymore and moved to Govee outlets, thermometers, and hydrometers. It works the same way, but I like the app better.
Cool! I’ll have to check Govee out next time I’m in the market. Good luck with your birds!
This was super helpful. Just starting on quail after having ducks which are a breeze in the winter. Easiest animals to care for in the cold. But it sounds like quail are right up there too!
Yeah! You’ll be fine. Quail are a cake walk in winter.
@@NHQuail I’m gonna hold you to that haha
Done😆
Are you still using these a few months later?
Yes! You’ll see them in my more recent videos. They work great!!!
Fantastic, thank you!
Good job thank from Katy Texas
Thank you!
How can I order eggs from them
Gopherridgequail.com Thievingotterfarm.com Go to either one of those two sites. I highly recommend both farms for getting your quail.
Thanks you 👍
I’m new to your channel and ordered my first batch of quails and ordered 8 week old from Gopher Ridge that will be shipped next week. The customer service is awesome ‼️Thanks for sharing their information ‼️
That’s awesome to hear!!! I’ve chatted with HP Murray a couple times and he is such a nice guy who loves his customers! So accommodating and will chat with you about anything😉 Wishing you the best with your birds! Let me know if you have any other questions I don’t answer in the videos. Always happy to talk quail! Best of luck!
Great idea and easy to assemble. Thanks for this information ‼️
Thanks for sharing your idea
Happy to share what I’ve learned along the way!
I like it
Great information 👍🏽 Thanks for sharing
Very welcome!
Thank You
I hop you are doing great job. Love you and your birds
Thanks so much for watching! They are fun and I do enjoy these little guys! Take care and enjoy the channel
I mount a feeder on each of the ends of my cages. I like to have a hopper like system. Full it from outside and don't have to disturb the birds.
Thanks for sharing. I have my first batch of quails hatching in a couple of days , i am new to them. I will have them under a brooder at first 90 degrees and gradually lower the temp every day My question is ; at what week would i be able to put them in the barn , I live in Canada and my barn is well insulated, almost never freeze Thanks
Hey there!! Thanks for watching. Living in NH has similar winters to Canada and in my experience once the birds are about 4-5 weeks old they can go outside. Basically you’re waiting for them to be fully feathered out. If they get cold they’ll huddle together. I’ve had 4-5 week old quail in temps where night gets into the teens and they are fine. As long as there are a few of them together and they are out of the elements (like in your barn) they’ll be just fine at that age. Good luck and enjoy raising them
One more thing that has worked for me. First week of life I keep the quail under a 250 watt heat bulb (red), week two I drop to 125 watt. Week 3 off heat entirely and week 4 or 5 out they go. Just make sure they’re kept inside when you do that method and they’ll be fine. Makes it a little easier and have done that with hundreds of birds never had a problem. Anyway, just a tip to take or leave.
@@NHQuail Thanks, we just bought a brinsea brooder 1200 , hopefully that will work as good as light bulbs and safer.
I think you’ll be happy with that brooder. Have heard great things! Let me know how your hatch goes. Best if luck
I dont think very many people realize that Quail's internal body temperature is around 108. They are very toasty little birds. Even the chicks when they get to 2-3 weeks, you can pick them up and they feel like those little hand-warming pods. Loud, screaming hand-warming pods. They run hot. I've seen a few people who live in places like Alaska and Montana, where they get literally like -40 and below, raising them just fine. I will say that so far I've had two shipments of eggs in my quail journey I started last year; the first one was Southwest Game Birds, and then later on after I got use to those, a MyShire Farms batch. It was kind of a mixed bag for both; the SWGB were overall more nervous and anxious, but the actual physical quality of the birds was substantial; they all had beautiful, thick coats of feathers and were all rather large (the smallest was 11oz, and the largest was an 18oz Hen who I needed two hands to pick up, but who for some bizarre reason will absolutely not lay eggs). MSF had better temperaments, with several of them actually self-domesticating to the point they will come to the front of the cage to greet me, I can actually pet and even pick them up with little issue despite not treating them any differently from the others (which helped when one hurt her leg and she let me do stuff while nursing her back), but they were all overall somewhat smaller, though not by much, and their coats didn't seem _quite_ as uniform and thick. I'm going with the clan-breeding method going forward, and I'm going to try hard to mix the two together to get a nice, well-behaved group of big, juicy thickums. The SWGB batch produced some good Roosters who are not only fairly large, but very gentle with the hens, and quite handsome to boot; one has an extremely dark face that I am seeing quite regularly pop up in his offspring so I am hoping I can keep that going, though admittedly I am not too concerned about their looks as long as they are plump, healthy and taste good.
Good to hear about your experiences with both breeders! Yeah, my SWGB whites are good size birds, but some are a little nervous as well. Never bought from MyShire but may have to do an order just to check them out. Thanks for sharing your experience
Would sending quail in this weather even work if you wanted to hatch them? I'm planning on getting quail this year as a present to myself. Liking the videos.
Hey thanks for watching! It’s always a gamble with shipped eggs. In general shipped eggs have less than 50% hatch rate. It’s kinda up to the postal carrier and how they handle. I have bought shipped eggs in winter and have always got something out of them.
Great videos! Just found your TH-cam..
Thanks for watching! Enjoy
I got interested in quail and found your channel. Good stuff, can't wait to see more.
Thanks so much for watching! Hope the channel gives you some good info on raising these amazing birds! Welcome aboard!
Love ur channel your quail are pretty and healthy I just hatched my first quail eggs
Good luck with your flock! They can be addictive! Enjoy the channel

Please discard me at the random part . I am living a different continent😊 likes your videos
Thanks so much for watching! What country are you from?
You should do a video on breeder and breed selection. Good luck on your channel. Congrats on 💯
I’ve got one in the works actually! I’m gonna post one about that in the spring when people start ramping up their breeding! Thanks for the insight and good luck with your birds
@seacoastcoturnix I don't have any. I am in the process of building cages and setting up for late spring.
Yeah, that’s a much better time to start out then winter! Good luck when you do! Any questions feel free to ask
Hey bro, just found your channel. Good info here. We use cedar trees in our pens. Birds like to hide in it and they don't care much about eating it.👍
Yeah! I’ve never really see them eat it either. Just seems like they like to hid and nest in it! Enjoy the channel my friend
Do they eat it?
I see them nipping at it I don’t know if they actually eat it or not, I think they just nest in it. I just enjoy watching them play in it
Hello Nick Frost its me again. Those Quilts are so adorable very cute. You are a lucky guy to had this birds, I used to had pets myself but where I live they are Foxes and Coyotes and those wild animals eat my pets that I had. Today I have Chickens Rosters and hens, but they are not mine my brother left them here where I live and I take care of them. They are secure so no fox or coyote will eat them. To me those Quilt you had are very defensive to a predator. Those birds don't have anything to defend themselves. I hope you keep it in a safe place. Anyways I enjoy this video and I like birds to, all kinds of animals. Its to late to say this but Merry Christmas and happy New Year. I wish that all the things you want you will accomplish this year. And most of all you have a good health taking care of yourself. I say it in a nice way, I am a good person it reflects what I say to people. Desanfurtunaty I don't have friends, but maybe one day I will had one. Well it seems your busy, because you don't post much content. But I like you channel. I will see you again Nick Frost.
Thanks so much!! A late Merry Christmas and happy new year to you as well!
Im new to quail and i bought from Myshire. Hopefully i have a good hatch rate. We will see.
Yeah I wish you the best! Myshire is a good size breeder and they have been doing this a long time! I have heard they have excellent hatch rates! Good luck!
