The Story Behind the Ferrari Testarossa #ferrari #testarossa #ferraritestarossa #ferrariclub
In this Ferrari Fact Files, I uncover the real reason the Testarossa looks like it does! A cheese grater! lol.
But there is an interesting story how those iconic strakes came to be and it wasn’t planned that way.
Let’s just say Germany played a role in making them the most iconic feature from any car to come out of the 80s!
The Testarossa is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable cars in Ferrari’s rich history. Its iconic side-mounted radiators, encased in distinctive horizontal slats, became a standout feature that the world had never seen before. It was originally planned to have open vents, but a certain country had concerns that kids would get trapped or caught in them!
The renowned project designer manager, Leonardo Fioravanti from Pininfarina recently unveiled during an Interview by Classic Driver during the 40th anniversary of Ferrari's legendary redhead, how the legendary Testarossa strakes came to be. It is worth the read!

The early Pininfarina design images of Testarossa were published by Supercar Ferrari Testarossa by Mark Hughes

Welcome to Ferrari Fact Files, where I delve into the fascinating and relatively unknown details of some of the greatest cars to come out of Maranello. In this video, we take an in-depth look at the Testarossa, a car I have a personal connection with. I dreamed of owning one since I was 14 years old, and I’m fortunate to have turned that dream into reality. The Testarossa is undoubtedly one of ...

It's definitely in the top 3 most beautiful Ferrari's of all-time for me. It's also the perfect pinnacle expression of the 308/328, which were BOTH (technically all 3) penned (updates included, lol) by a gentleman artist named Leonardo Fioravanti. Right, Jason? 😉👍
@@normsallitt2753 I would agree it’s the best work in my opinion of Leonardo! This is the fitting icing on the cake for one as a career Id say!

In 1984, people did not necessarily know what they were looking at. However, the TestaRossa has remarkable staying power as a design. Everything you see is functional. This same design philosophy carried over to the 599GTB. It gets pretty good mileage on the interstate, too.

I owned a 308 GTSI 5 years, it had a fire when the rear firewall fuel line blew, we saved it. when buying any rear engine Ferrari, make sure the entire fuel system is looked over, and replace anything it needs, these cars are prone to fires, buy a showroom one with low clicks, and a full service history.

@jasonjcr_cars819 wrong buddy. He designed the 308 - which is a *gorgeous* car; then he left Pininfarina, and some *hack* was tasked with modifying the perfect 308. They naturally turned it into the ugly 328 (ie: your car).

@@anthonypalladino6585 I would highly recommend making that happen too!
I enjoyed 127,000 miles in a 308GTS which proved to be the most reliable car I have ever owned. I just followed the rule of warm up gently then once the oil reaches 200/210, thrash it to an inch of its life. I think the 308/328 are a much better bet than the later 355 (had one of those too) onwards. Like Jason says, you can do a lot of everyday servicing yourself.
@@jamesfairmind2247 thanks for your comments and reaffirming that the 308 /328 is absolutely the car to have from Maranello! That an impressive testament to her reliability/ drive ability James! Merry Christmas from Austria!
@@jasonjcr_cars819 Never had a single stranded breakdown in all that time. Just once around 100k miles on a stormy winters night I went through a deep flood and killed the crank shaft position sender on the way to Christmas with my family but I had got there so it didn't matter. When it didn't start for the first time ever I guessed what was wrong and simply ordered one in the post and fitted it in a few minutes and it started fine. Looking at your 328 makes me lust after one of those again. Used to think the 328 lacked the delicate lines of the 308 but then the deep front spoiler of my QV used to frequently get chunks chewed out of it on rough English backroads at high speed and since I only buy blue or black Ferraris in black the 328 looks absolutely fine. Happy Christmas to you.

@ I will do what I can! Unfortunately the cars are now in winter sleep mode and not close to me now!
@@jasonjcr_cars819 I understand, no problem J! Thanks so much! May they rest well haha
Absolutely! Less a problem on daily used cars like Porsches. There is more faith in reliability on those. Don’t think it’s true, though. A big problem is that all these low mileage Ferraris have even more issues that higher milage cars as they haven’t been driven regularly! I payed that bill so I know. It costs a fortune to fix all the bugs of a 30 year old Ferrari to get it reliable and in full function. I also payed a fortune on a Porsche 993 purchased with higher milage (100.000mls) from a Porsche dealer. Same running costs in repairs and the car was only 20y old at that time. They are all old cars. No matter if Ferrari, Porsche and so on… just buy what you love and be prepared for the bills 💸😅👍🏻

Hi Jason, thank you for your shares and experience. What exhaust system did you buy for the 328- did you say Tubi style and exact type would you recommend and the costs incl. the works on it (service)? Is it approved for streets and not only for tracks? Does it not only sound different but adds also performance? Did you exchange the whole exhaust system or just some parts (muffler, manifolds, catalytic converter, pipes)? Mine is 328 gtb 1986. Any recommendations? Cheers
Sounds fantastic. Many thanks.
Great video and spot on with the analysis. I’ve had my 89 328 for 22 years and still get a buzz every time I drive it. One important point to make. 328’s are generally bomb proof but they were built to be used. If you don’t use the car regularly, parts will fail and some are becoming increasingly difficult (and expensive) to replace as they are no longer manufactured, such as the ABS unit on post 88 cars including the 328, 348 and 355. Bottom line is use them and enjoy them, and they won’t let you down - usually!
@@DavidReitman-d4d yeah that’s very good advice! I absolutely understand how they need to be used. Mine does not like to sit for a week, or six months between seasons lol I don’t have an ABS car so I won’t have that exact issue, but I’m sure something like else will sneak up! Thanks for your note David!
