    After checking my hives last week I stopped feeding them syrup. It was getting too crowded restricting the queen from laying. I'll have to check them again this week to see how the stores are holding up. Did you find any swarm cells yet? That strong hive that had swarm cells last week has flying drones also. Going to have to keep my eye on her. She is a 2 year old yellow queen.

    • @tritonewr4054
      @tritonewr4054 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I didn’t find any swarm cells yet. There is actually a lot of drone brood and some flying drones. I really need to get them in ten frame equipment very soon.

  • @russellkoopman3004
    @russellkoopman3004 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nice update on the hives. Do you run mostly 6 frame nucs then? That is what I'm favoring. That extra frame just adds girth to the hive allowing them to cluster in the middle without being on an outside wall.

      I really like 6 frame nucs. I’d like to try a overwintering some singles next winter. The double 6’s really over winter well. I tried them 5 frame nucs side by side in a ten frame box. They over wintered really well too, but they’re just so tight. Makes them a pain to work.

    Nice setup there Wayne. I'm surprised Mike wasn't there with a huge stack of boxes to dip. LOL I'll bet cutting the time down to 3 minutes saved a lot of time. I thought it took 10 minutes or more. But at that higher temp any water in the wood has to boil out fast. I like your bottom boards made at a slant. Do you make most of your own boxes also??

    • @tritonewr4054

    Impressive box. You must be a carpenter by trade or your dad taught you well. On my outyards I set a wide board over the fronts at a 45 degree angle in front of the hives to block the wind from blowing into the hives. When it warms up I lean it back so the bees can fly and if a storm is coming I lean it against the hives. You can guess I'm retired. LOL

  • @russellkoopman3004
    @russellkoopman3004 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    do you wax dip these or just paint? That first board is a great idea. Saves a bunch of time. Is there a reason that the feeder hole isn't in the middle of the lid? I use a 2.75" hole for a mason jar. Thanks for the video and ideas.

    • @tritonewr4054
      @tritonewr4054 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah I built a wax dip tank last winter and dipped a bunch last spring. My first lids I drilled off center so when the buckets leaked it wasn’t in the middle of the brood nest. The ten frame production hives seem to deal with leaky buckets better than nucs. So I just kept doing them the same so the reflectix will sit right on all of them. Do you need anything dipped in the wax tank? I’ll be firing it up soon.

  • @russellkoopman3004
    @russellkoopman3004 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Your winter wrap is almost the exact same as mine. You must have stolen my patented method. LOL I like the tar paper top. I've been using 1/2 inch styrofoam. Did you do more than one OAV this winter? I did three - Nov, Dec, Jan. With the new instavap it is so easy and I had the warmup weather for it. I'm impressed with your insulation setup. How did you fasten it to the hives? I've been using a couple of 6 frame nucs in the past and have bought some more this winter. I suppose you make your own boxes? I'd love to come visit you sometime this spring if you are open to a visit.
